Obama's Nine Hard Truths

In Cairo, Obama challenges all parties involved in the clash between the West and the Muslim world.

On Thursday morning, President Barack Obama decided to see what happened when America and the Muslim world stopped being polite and started getting real. In an hour-long speech in Cairo, Egypt, Obama bluntly discussed seven of the most vexing problems facing the United States' relationship with Muslims. It was a veritable "house meeting"—Real World: Cairo?—for two forces that have frequently found themselves  at odds in recent years. Calling for "a new beginning" to the relationship, Obama began with a promise of honesty:

"As the Holy Koran tells us," Obama said, "'be conscious of God and speak always the truth.' That is what I will try to do—to speak the truth as best I can, humbled by the task before us, and firm in my belief that the interests we share as human beings are far more powerful than the forces that drive us apart." Here, in my mind, are the nine hardest truths Obama offered during his speech:

story continues below
story continued from above

Hard for Israel: "it is also undeniable that the Palestinian people—Muslims and Christians—have suffered in pursuit of a homeland... They endure the daily humiliations—large and small—that come with occupation. So let there be no doubt: the situation for the Palestinian people is intolerable. America will not turn our backs on the legitimate Palestinian aspiration for dignity, opportunity, and a state of their own." "The United States does not accept the legitimacy of continued Israeli settlements," and "Israelis must acknowledge that just as Israel’s right to exist cannot be denied, neither can Palestine’s."

Hard for Hamas: "To play a role in fulfilling Palestinian aspirations, and to unify the Palestinian people, Hamas must put an end to violence, recognize past agreements, and recognize Israel’s right to exist."; Violence of the sort perpetrated by Palestinians against Israelis is "not how moral authority is claimed; that is how it is surrendered."

Hard for Dick Cheney: "I have unequivocally prohibited the use of torture by the United States, and I have ordered the prison at Guantanamo Bay closed by early next year."/"No system of government can or should be imposed upon one nation by any other."

Hard for 9/11 Truthers and Muslims Who Think The Jews Did ItTM: "I am aware that some question or justify the events of 9/11. But let us be clear: Al Qaeda killed nearly 3,000 people on that day. The victims were innocent men, women, and children from America and many other nations who had done nothing to harm anybody. And yet Al Qaeda chose to ruthlessly murder these people, claimed credit for the attack, and even now states their determination to kill on a massive scale. They have affiliates in many countries and are trying to expand their reach. These are not opinions to be debated; these are facts to be dealt with."

Hard for Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and other Holocaust Deniers: Around the world, the Jewish people were persecuted for centuries, and anti-Semitism in Europe culminated in an unprecedented Holocaust. Tomorrow, I will visit Buchenwald, which was part of a network of camps where Jews were enslaved, tortured, shot, and gassed to death by the Third Reich. Six million Jews were killed—more than the entire Jewish population of Israel today. Denying that fact is baseless, ignorant, and hateful. Threatening Israel with destruction—or repeating vile stereotypes about Jews—is deeply wrong, and only serves to evoke in the minds of Israelis this most painful of memories while preventing the peace that the people of this region deserve.

Hard for Every Arab Leader: "I do have an unyielding belief that all people yearn for certain things: the ability to speak your mind and have a say in how you are governed; confidence in the rule of law and the equal administration of justice; government that is transparent and doesn’t steal from the people; the freedom to live as you choose. Those are not just American ideas, they are human rights, and that is why we will support them everywhere."

Hard for Muslims who Reject Religious Pluralism: "Among some Muslims, there is a disturbing tendency to measure one’s own faith by the rejection of another’s. The richness of religious diversity must be upheld—whether it is for Maronites in Lebanon or the Copts in Egypt. And fault lines must be closed among Muslims as well, as the divisions between Sunni and Shia have led to tragic violence, particularly in Iraq."

Hard for Muslims Who Reject Equal Rights for Women: "Our daughters can contribute just as much to society as our sons, and our common prosperity will be advanced by allowing all humanity—men and women—to reach their full potential. I do not believe that women must make the same choices as men in order to be equal, and I respect those women who choose to live their lives in traditional roles. But it should be their choice."

Hard for Anti-Muslim Bigots in America: "Islam has always been a part of America’s story. The first nation to recognize my country was Morocco. In signing the Treaty of Tripoli in 1796, our second President John Adams wrote, 'The United States has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion or tranquility of Muslims.' And since our founding, American Muslims have enriched the United States. They have fought in our wars, served in government, stood for civil rights, started businesses, taught at our Universities, excelled in our sports arenas, won Nobel Prizes, built our tallest building, and lit the Olympic Torch. And when the first Muslim-American was recently elected to Congress, he took the oath to defend our Constitution using the same Holy Koran that one of our Founding Fathers—Thomas Jefferson—kept in his personal library."

HA!
We do not have equal administration of justice in the US system. We have a system of authority being divided between powerful law firms and administered by corrupt judges in return for future employment, speaking engagements or just because they are nasty.
" . . . same Holy Koran that one of our Founding Fathers—Thomas Jefferson—kept in his personal library."
This Qur'an was studied by Jefferson specifically to provide him with insight into the Muslim priates operating off the Ivory Coast of Africa. He then launched a war to irridicate them.

Where to start? Jefferson never fought a war off the Ivory Coast. Do you think he studied the bible to help fight a war in Europe? I don't know if you don't know history or geography or neither, but just do a bit of fact-checking before posting.

Rehheelleeeellly . . . . .

"Two centuries ago, the ostensibly pacifist president Thomas Jefferson launched America’s first war on foreign soil—a war against terror. The enemy was Muslim; the war was waged unconventionally, with commandos, native troops, encrypted intelligence, and foreign bases under short-term alliances. For nearly two hundred years, Barbary pirates had haunted the Mediterranean, enslaving infidels and extorting millions of dollars from European countries in a holy war against Christendom. Newly independent, American ships became a target of piracy. Instead of paying tribute, after his inauguration Jefferson chose to fight. With telling illustrations, Jefferson’s War traces the events surrounding his resolute belief that peace with the Barbary States, and the attainment of Europe’s respect, could be gained only through the "medium of war." Jefferson ordered the new U.S. Navy to Tripoli in 1801, starting the Barbary War that ended in 1805. The war proved that ship-for-ship the U.S. Navy was the equal of any navy afloat. William Eaton’s bold frontal assault on Derna with a fractious army of Arabs, disaffected Tripolitans, European mercenaries, and eight U.S. Marines punctuated the American victory as the marines ran up the Stars and Stripes over the city—the first flag-raising on hostile shores by U.S. troops. Except the Ivory Coast is

Except the Ivory Coast is the West Africa and the Barbary Coast in North Africa.

Also, as a deist and pluralist, I seriously doubt the War against the Barbary pirates is the reason he had the Quran. That doesn't mean Jefferson was a Muslim and I don't think that is what he was implying.

Most importantly, the quote of John Adams that Obama used in referring to the same time, and also contains the phrase "As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion"

OK, yeh, yeh, yeh .

OK, yeh, yeh, yeh . .
"Barbary" is not "Ivory"
'Ivory' is the West Coast where Muslim pirates operate in the 21st century while the 'Barbary coast" is both a hotel & casino in Las Vegas--as well as the Northern coast of Africa--where Muslim pirates operated in the 19th Century.
You have truly disgraced the head troll with this profound difference and his fundamental flaw [in fact gross blunder] of the historical record. Feel better now?

As to the other part of the story: The narrative that Jefferson had procured and studied the Qur'an as a method of acquainting himself with his enemy in preparation for the BARBARY Pirate War is not at all new. Presidential historians of Jefferson's contemporary time-frame commented on this point. I am not making it up. This historical reference point looses its normal (natural) obscurity in reflection of Mr. Obama's statement:
"And when the first Muslim-American was recently elected to Congress, he took the oath to defend our Constitution using the same Holy Koran that one of our Founding Fathers—Thomas Jefferson—kept in his personal library."
Technically true. But equally either misleading (or ignorant) of the underlying (somewhat conflicted) reason that the Qur'an was in Jefferson's library to begin with.

It was the Barbary Coast, not the Ivory Coast. Now can you see President Oogabooga doing something as patriotic???

"Barbary Coast" -vs- "Ivory

The troll admits this mistake but . . . WHO CARES?
Both are coasts of Africa where pirates operate(d).
Is that all you got?

Great article. Good to see

Great article.

Good to see a president use reason and display a little wisdom. I hope it creates constructive discussion in the middle east and in america.

Its sad the comments here seem to ignore everything the president just talked about.

Also, the book labeling one of the first US naval battles as a war on "terror" is a joke. It just throws more wood into the fire of right-wing Christian extremism.

Happy to be represented by Obama

I can't think of a better approach to drawing Muslim support away from al Qaeda et al than the route Obama chose. His manner, his delivery, the points he chose to focus on...all exactly right.

Obama has contributed, not only for the US, but for the 'West', a strong and direct statement about our values that has been called for. This is the statement that was not delivered, for example, in response to the uproar/violence over the Danish cartoons and should have been.

I lose patience with the pundits that seem to be overlooking the firm and unyielding core of the address and focusing on the conciliatory aspects that led up to the grist and it's a relief to see that Mother Jones headlines the 'hard truths' aspect that was the point. He chastened without insulting, his understanding of the culture was a boon. Sun Tsu would approve, I'm sure.

This is the first president that I can recall who addresses the public in a frank manner, as though they were adults and as if we were equal partners in democracy.

I did not jump on the enthusiastic Obama bandwagon during the campaign but am ready to now. I am most impressed and quite proud to have this man representing--not just his "The Decider's" pronouncements, but--the values of America. He did a good job, I'm glad we hired him.

After spending some time

After spending some time reading the responses from both the Muslim audiences and here in the US, this speech was well received. The printed interviews from ordinary Muslims seems to reflect a guarded optimism. This is remarkable considering how Arabs and Muslims have been treated in the past the last administration being the most recent example of this treatment. One woman in Saudi Arabia wondered if there were any Muslim heads of state with the courage to come to America and quote the Bible. Of course the extremist Muslim groups condemned the speech. That is not surprising. What is interesting is how similar in tone and intensity this reaction is to the reactions of the Republican right wing talking heads in this country. The best part is that no one is really making this comparison in the MSM. It is just that when you read one then the other the similarities are apparent. This analogy is not mine, someone else wrote it. The President is a 3D chess master playing opponents who have barely mastered checkers. We are so lucky the have him as President.

Long Time Coming

It is a wonderful thing that President Obama has delivered this speech. He addresses the core of the issue - that none of us are willing to take a hard look at the wrongs we have done and continue to do - Americans, Israelis, Palestinians, Jews, Muslims, and Christians. And yet we harbor so much rage and we think is justifiable. Peace be with all peoples of the world. Do not be deceived by those who wish to bring us down to war and hate. The majority of the world longs for peace and prosperity and it will never be found by dropping bombs, putting up walls, or terrorism. I think Mr. Obama speech clearly indicates his desire to speak the truth and make peace for all peoples. There are plenty of things that are wrong with Washington, lobbyists, and our military posture around the world and the President is not innocent in all cases. However in this speech, I think it is clear that here lies his strength - to inspire us and the world to do better. The problems between West and East are older and more deeply rooted than any other conflict and men like Mr. Obama are what is needed.

As an Muslim American, I can

As an Muslim American, I can tell you, many people within our masjid were very pleased with the president's speech. Although I may not agreed with every little aspect of the speech (such as his obvious omission of Israel's recent excursion in Gaza), I still found it be a good speech overall. Inshallah, he'll live up to his words....unlike every other president in recent history.

... Israel's recent excursion in Gaza

No US elected offical is brave enough to risk being labled an anti semite by telling the truth about the Aparthied going on in Israel. Too many zionist in this country have too much power and money.

A zionist is not necessarily a Jew. Some zionists are Christians. I don't have issues with Jews. I do have issues with Zionists. If you are going to hate me for that, hate away and prove my point.

Plinko:

This video never seems to get old:

Israel staged a defensive military operation after 8,000 anti-civilian rockets had been fired into Israel over 2+ years. Each of those 8,000 rockts and mortars constituted a SEPERATE war crime under the Geneva convention. 8,000 seperate and distinct war crimes against Israel and the above blogger is solely obsessed with a nation who was founded by and of refugees from genocide.
Regarding "Zionism", contrary to popular belief (both for and against) there is no such thing. There are only Israelis, anti-Israelis and pro-Israelis. The concept of "Zionism" ended with the formation of the Jewish National Homeland (aka Israel) in 1948. Those who consider themselves "Zionists" are mainly idiots and those who see "Zionism" as some sort of threat to humanity are mainly Jew haters.
You've heard the expression "the truth shall set you free"? Well, its wrong. The truth will NOT set those free who inisist on being imprisoned by pretend reality.

Does Zionism Exist Anymore?

"Zi·on·ism (zī'ə-nĭz'əm)
n. A Jewish movement that arose in the late 19th century in response to growing anti-Semitism and sought to reestablish a Jewish homeland in Palestine. Modern Zionism is concerned with the support and development of the state of Israel.
Zi'on·ist adj. & n., Zi'on·is'tic adj."

www.dictionary.com

It seems to. As for accusing me of being a Jew-hater, I couldn't idenifity a Jew if I had to because I don't care who is Jewish and who is not. You did accuse me of that, "... those who see "Zionism" as some sort of threat to humanity are mainly Jew haters", although I don't see and never said I saw Zionism as a threat to humanity.

As for you video. I'm not making the argument that the Israelis have not been attacked by terrorists. I'm just saying that they have created a situation where the Palestinians have no choice but to respond with terrorist tactics.

Two wrongs don't make a right.

If the Israeli army has lobbed mortors into Palestinian neighborhoods before trying to get a few terrorists. They always manage to kill a few children in the process. They probably do this in response to the Palestinians bombing a busload of Israeli children. My remarks from above are meant to demonstrate that our government will look the other way at the "terrorist" like tactics used by the Israelis. That is all.

Our government has a responsibilty to condemn all violations of human rights but when it comes to the Israelis we seem to look the other way.

extremism

I am glad to see that Obama has replaced the word “Terror’ with the word “extremism”.

We can now call it what it is...Religious extremism and Political extremism..

The religious Extremists have taken the words of the Bible and the Koran and twisted them so they are not recognisable as books of Love and Compassion but are books of hypocracy, fear and Hate..

This applies to both the Christian and Muslim religions..

Political Extremism is based on Corruption and greed..Also there is the same theme of hypocracy fear and hate as practised by religions. The Politicians have done the same thing with the Constitution as religion has done with the Bible and the Koran..

I am glad we can finally call it what it is “Extremism”.

Trollstein

I humbly herewith submit

I humbly herewith submit that "terrorist" was not so much of an insult as it was seen as a relative concept. Anyone who invoked fear and/or loathing was then equally accused of being a "terrorist". Thus, American and allied forces who hurt or killed (or even scared) civilians were tagged as "terrorists" even if their aim was to employ "counter-terrorism". Bombs that went off in Iraqi day markets were then blamed on the so called "occupation forces" much in the same way that certain cultures blame the rape victim for the rape. Through that twisted logic the OTHER side became the "terrorists".
But "religious extremism" is somewhat more difficult to parse out in converse proportion. The street-level Arabs are themselves victimized by such mongering and realize that the West is not so deeply afflicted. In time however, bumper-stickers will be developed to try to rationalize how the Western people are really the "religious extremists".
Humanity's greatest gift is the ability to imagine.
Humanity's greatest curse is the proclivity to pretend.
