THE CONSPIRACY: Between 1950 and 1975, the government conducted a series of risky top-secret experiments on American soldiers. The CIA and the military are thought to have tested as many as 400 chemical and biological substances including VX nerve agent, mustard gas, sarin, cyanide, LSD, and PCP on human guinea pigs—with frightening results.
THE CONSPIRACY THEORISTS: Six former GIs recently filed suit against the CIA and Pentagon, claiming they've been denied awards and health benefits promised to them when they volunteered for classified tests at the Army's Edgewood Arsenal in Maryland. Now suffering from unexplained ailments, the men are also demanding full disclosure of what exactly was done to them. One recalls that he was given a powerful hallucinogen and "thought he was 3 feet tall, saw animals on the walls, thought he was being pursued by a 6-foot-tall white rabbit, heard people calling his name, thought that all his freckles were bugs under his skin, and used a razor to try to cut these bugs out." If the suit, the largest of its kind, succeeds, it could win compensation for other test subjects—at least those who know they were experimented on.
MEANWHILE, BACK ON EARTH: The ex-soldiers aren't hallucinating. The Army's secret testing program and a CIA mind-control project (known as MKULTRA) were exposed in the mid-'70s. In 1994, the General Accounting Office confirmed that the agency had tested "nerve agents, nerve agent antidotes, psychochemicals, and irritants" on GIs. Yet what really happened may never be known: Many of the records from these clandestine tests have been destroyed.

"Were GIs used as nerve-gas and mind-control guinea pigs?" Surely, no more than than the unsuspecting civilian clients/victims of Dr. Ewan Cameron, hired by the CIA to carry out LSD experiments at Allen Memorial hospital in Montreal, Québec, Canada in the 1950's; some of them never recovered from the overwhelming effects of massive doses lasting over two weeks. The US government has never taken responsibility when challenged by less toad-eating governments than the present gang.

One hot August Sunday in 1954 my shipmates at Anacostia Naval Receiving Station went swimming in a rock quarry. That week I came down with polio and was sent to Bethesda Naval Hospital where a CIA agent told me to sit in a dark room and meditate on what sin I had committed as a child to make me paralyze myself. While I meditated I was told to drink a large glass of frosty orange juice. I don't remember how many days I meditated, but the LSD in the o.j. did its work, I freaked out. I got some feeling back into my body parts, but I searched the compartments in my mind for many years until 1974 when a doctor in a VA hospital told me about the LSD. Years later an ex-Naval doctor told me that the LSD was found to take the swelling out of the brain stem enabling me to work my leg more freely. Also, he explained that the LSD cut off the pain so that I could continue working at an easier job until January of the next year until the pain became unbearable. Although I had worked for two high ranking officers' wives at Naval Relief, on entering Bethesda the second time I was placed in a lock up ward with some pretty nasty people. In May of 1955 I was discharged and barely finished a Master of Theology degree. I had to switch jobs in order to make a living, and I was lucky enough to marry another young lady than the one I had intended to marry. At the age of 79 I get a nice disability check every month.

Some of the corpmen in the lock up ward treated me like dirt. They blamed me for getting sick on the LSD. After a month or so I pushed a heavy food cart from the kitchen to the women's locked ward. It hurt every muscle in my polio hurt body, but perhaps the exercise did me good. One of the patients who had to push the cart got to the top of the steep ramp and let it go through the officers' mess. Those carts weighed at least 600 pounds.
The thing I regretted most was that after the women ate I helped a WAVE patient clean up the galley. A doctor came through and kidded her about having a good looking sailor alone. I thought it would be a good idea for the two of us to go to a movie. She looked hurt, and told me she expected better behavior of me. I didn't touch her or make any overt movements, but she ran out of the galley, went into the bathroom on her ward and cut her wrist. When they found her she was dead.

I mean were you ever twenty-three-years old washed out of OCS after having spent six weeks in a pneumonia ward at Bainbridge, Maryland during Navy Boot after breaking up with a New Mexico preacher's daughter you thought you were going to marry? How low could you feel getting polio being half crippled and then going crazy and being locked up in a psycho ward with everything going to hell in a hand basket. It suddenly hitting you that you may never get the hell out of a locked ward again. They were discharging men out of your ward into the crazy house at Veterans Hospitals. There wasn't anything that could drive a man to killing himself more than this prospect.
After Christmas leave to Kentucky after the polio and spending it with a beautiful young lady, not the one from college who'd married an ex-sailor then on her honeymoon written you a Dear John in the pneumonia ward. I still wonder how she got my address to send me a Christmas letter telling me how sorry she was for me. And, how had she gotten away from her new husband of two days to write me a letter? There is a bunch of things I'll never know unless in the here after all things like the Apostle John wrote in Revelations all things will be revealed to you. Hell of a thing.
They had two corpsmen in the ward office watching us all night with two corpsmen playing cards and watching us in the locked ward. Four strong men watching a a bunch of psychos trying to sleep while the LSD played havoc with my brain going over and over starting from my first remembrance in some mighty cold shacks in LaPlata County, Colorado. Not remembering like you would remember a sore throat or a high fever but seeing everything like in a black and white movie - flashbacks. LSD flashbacks and not even in color like some have told me they saw their flashbacks after LSD. On one of my required visits to the VA hospitals a veteran told me, "Hell, man, you're telling me you're mad at the government for giving you free LSD? I had to pay good money for the acid I got." I was lucky.

The doctor at the sick bay sent me to Bethesda with polio. After the turd with the CIA worked on me and my eyes started going bad he said it was Guillain-Barre Syndrome which affects the vision. I don't think polio affects the vision so a cover up by changing the diagnoses? The VA has changed the diagnoses back to polio this is after they have found that LSD affects the optic nerve. All I know is that when the sun hit my eyes I couldn't and can't see very good. I wonder if any other street drug causes a change in vision? If so, a good reason not to indulge.
I wish to add that after OCS I was sent to Personnel Man School at Bainbridge, Maryland where I scored second from the top in a class of sixty. At my next duty station close to Washington D.C., of all the men who took the test to advance to Personnel Man Petty Officer3rd class, I was the only man out of the Potomac River Naval Command to make the grade. I strongly condemn President Truman for authorizing the CIA to give LSD to military personnel. Very fine men lost their minds and health because of idiots who did not have the sense to stop giving a poisonous material to men and women who were treated like animals. After two years and eight months of honorable service I was honorably discharged only to find that I had appendicitis and gall stones. Because of my experience I loath any person who sells illegal drugs to human beings. May God have mercy on their rotten souls.

http://www.szasz.com/ Thomas S. Szasz was my doctor when I re-entered Bethesda. I was there from January to May, and I saw him three times. Seems he was writing a book so he didn't show very often. He was very friendly, and when the CIA doctor was called back for a hearing, Dr. Szasz testified that the treatment I was given when the LSD was administered harmed me a great deal. LSD was not mentioned.
Since I am older and wiser I do not think they had legal authority to confine me since I had done nothing overt to show signs of mental incompetency or the intention of harming others or myself. It's water under the bridge, but I joined the Navy to serve my country and not to be used as an experiment that ruined my chances of following the work that I intended to do.

Although I was discharged from a neuro-psychiatric ward in May of 1955 the shame of this happening lingers until this day. When I returned to my family I was unable to explain why I was released from the Navy a year and four months before my enlistment was over - I had no idea that a CIA agent had poisoned my orange juice with LSD. For that matter I had never heard of LSD. Returning to Southern Baptist Theological Seminary was difficult. Some of the professors were anti-war much less willing to accept the fact that when I spoke before my classmates I would have convulsions. When I finally received a Bachelor of Divinity degree in 1960 I was fortunate that my wife was in charge of a mission in the slum area of Louisville. When our son was born I was unable to get a church so after moving into her parents home in Austin, Texas I took a menial job with the Texas Department of Agriculture. Even though I advanced in this job I was always handicapped by being partially paralyzed and having been in a mental ward. After all these years in posting this thread of thought I am partially realizing that what happened wasn't my fault.
