Julia Whitty is the author of A Tortoise for the Queen of Tonga which was a finalist for the PEN/Hemingway Award. She has been a recipient of an O. Henry Award and a Rona Jeffe Foundations Writers Award, and she is currently finishing a book on coral reefs. Her previous articles for Mother Jones are "All the Disapperaing Islands" (July/August 2003) and "Smuggling Hope" (March/April 2004).
