Bishop Sam Butler and Maxine Butler have been lifelong residents of Louisiana. Bishop Sam and Maxine are celebrating 20 years of service to St. Luke’s Church just outside of Baton Rouge. When their congregation became aware of the dire situation for those unable to get out of New Orleans, they pooled their resources and rented a 48-seat coach to bring residents out of the city; it was twice turned away. After the chaos and devastation of Katrina, they continue to reach out in a community that saw it’s population double in the space of a week. Bishop, his wife, and his congregation renovated their community center and former church building into long-term shelters for families. The cost to run the shelters for one year is roughly $200,000, but with faith and generosity of individuals they have made the renovations and bills so far.
