Joseph Margulies received his BA with honors from Cornell University in 1982, and his JD cum laude from Northwestern University School of Law in 1988. After his clerkship with judge William Hart of the Northern District of Illinois, Margulies joined the staff of the Texas Capital Resource Center, where he represented men and women on Texas’ death row. In 1994, Margulies entered private practice, specializing in civil rights and capital defense. In 2002, Margulies was the distinguished practitioner in residence at Cornell University Law School, and in 2004, he joined the faculty at the McArthur Justice Center. Margulies writes and lectures widely on capital defense and civil liberties in the wake of September 11. He was lead counsel in Rasul v. Bush, the case in which the Supreme Court decided that terrorism detainees are entitled to judicial review.
