Note to Young Skinheads
When will bigots come up with slurs our children can relate to? From the Raleigh-Durham News and Observer:
Gov. Beverly Perdue asked for—and received—the resignation of NC Alcoholic Beverage Commission Chairman Doug Fox on Tuesday, just hours after newspapers provided Perdue's office with a copy of a racist photo illustration sent from Fox's e-mail address after last November's election.
The e-mail included an altered photo of the White House that turned the South Lawn into an enormous watermelon patch. The phrase, "There goes the neighborhood ..." was printed above the photo.
The e-mail was sent from Fox's law firm address Nov. 14—10 days after Barack Obama was elected president. The message, which had been forwarded multiple times by others before reaching Fox, contained no text other than the subject line, "how true."
This is an outrage! How are young non-black racists supposed to figure out such dated racial slurs? We all know that kids today don't know much history, like the name of that cold country to our north and the hot one to our south. Now you expect them to be familiar with minstrel shows?
Young skinheads: Demand that your elders have the common decency, and KKK Kommunity spirit, to update your racist imagery to reflect the times. What's next? An email replete with references to 'coons,' 'pickaninnies,' and 'jungle bunnies'?
C'mon neanderthals. You can do better than this.

Over and Over
Your articles paint with such a broad stroke that good people get caught up in your aspersions. In this case, I am referring to your insinuation that all Skins are Neo-Nazis. The Skinhead movement started as a working-class movement that was eventually overshadowed by the far-right white supremacists who flocked to the organization in the 1970s. There are, however, still a large number of traditional Skins who are not racist in any way.
I have had the pleasure of fighting (literally fist-fighting) alongside numerous members of S.H.A.R.P. (Skin Heads Against Racial Prejudice) against the Nazis who tried to overrun our music scene. We succeeded in driving them away from our local concerts so that people of all types could come and enjoy a positive experience.
The next time you see a clean scalp and braces (thin suspenders worn by Skins), don't assume you're face to face with a racist. Check his or her jacket for a SHARP patch because you might have encountered a great ally.

This guy's site is a little vulgar (but hey, a skin will tell you what he thinks [I use the gender specific he because a female skin is called a byrd or skinbyrd]). He does a pretty good job of describing the history of the skins and the involvement of SHARP. Best part is I learned a little something too, which is that there are a lot of Trads who are not SHARP by label, but who still hate Nazis. (In FL, Trads aren't a big force. There aren't a lot of things I will jump to defend, but as a Jew in the hardcore scene, I would have had my face beaten in on several occasions if it weren't for the help of the SHARPs. I try to chime in to defend their reputation whenever I think it's possible.

The paper is the Raleigh News and Observer, not the Raleigh-Durham News and Observer. It is published in Raleigh. Durham is a town 25 miles away. FYI, while there is a Raleigh-Durham International Airport, there is no town called Raleigh-Durham.
