Dear Nixon, Love Elvis

Elvis Presley may have been the king, but he wasn't much of a letter writer. In a 1970 missive to Richard Nixon in which he asked to be made a special agent in the budding War on Drugs, his sentences run together with the reckless abandon of a semi-literate speed freak. Plus, he also appears to really like Nixon, a hazy choice at best.

A few choice quotes from Elvis's letter to Nixon:

"The drug culture, the hippie elements, the SDS, Black Panthers, etc. do not consider me as their enemy or as they call it the establishment. I call it American and I love it. Sir, I can and will be of any service that I can to help the country out. I have no concern or motives other than helping the country out..."

"Sir, I am staying at the Washington Hotel, Room 505-506-507...I am registered under the name Jon Burrow. I will be here for as long as long [sic] as it takes to get the credential of a Federal Agent. I have done an in-depth study of drug abuse and Communist brainwashing techniques and I am right in the middle of the whole thing where I can and will do the most good..."

"I was nominated this coming year one of America's Ten Most Outstanding Young Men...I am sending you the short autobiography about myself so you can better understand this..."

P.S. "I believe that Sir, were one of the Top Ten Outstanding Men of America also."

Elvis Presley IS The King

Elvis Presley remains the Greatest Entertainer of All Time. He was the whole package - he had the talent, the voice, the charisma, the looks and the humility to go with them.
He was also an excellent actor when given the right script e.g. 'King Creole'; 'Jailhouse Rock'; 'Wild In The Country'; 'Flaming Star' and 'Follow That Dream'.
Of course, Elvis was more than just an entertainer and was, in fact, an historical figure. He broke down social and cultural barriers in 1950's U.S.A. making it easier for all entertainers who followed in his footsteps including The Beatles and Michael Jackson. Elvis paved the way for Dr. Martin Luther King in the 1960's.

Elvis sang in virtually every musical genre available to him whereas Michael Jackson was limited to one or two and did not mature throughout his career. His voice was extremely weak and sounded more feminine than masculine.

Letter to Nixon

His writing may have not been developed, after all he came from extremely humble beginnings and only finished high school but, in person, he was a master at communicating, as witnessed by the answers he gives to reporters, in the early years, especially to those who underestimated him.

Elvis is a cultural icon

Personally, I can't sit and watch his movies for more than a few minutes, but I do think he was an amazing musical performer, and his meteoric rise to fame is nothing short of fascinating.

While he had as much charisma and "star power" as anyone, politics was an arena that he was clearly unsuited for.

I do admire him for his confidence, his singing talent, and his success. It was unfortunate, that, ultimately, he couldn't handle the fame, the power, and the money. (Or, maybe he was disillusioned by the fact that he was treated like a God, when, in fact, he was just a mere mortal.)

Elvis was a great singer. He

Elvis was a great singer. He had a really beautiful voice.
I guess it was unfortunate that everywhere he went he was
mobbed by amorous women because that kept us from
knowing him the way we know Dean Martin or Tony Bennett.
By the way, where did they stand on the war on drugs?
Everybody loves somebody sometime but Dino didn't need
body guards to keep women off of him. How did Nixon
understand the sex symbol Elvis? Wasn't he one of the
people demanding the King not wiggle? I just wonder how
Elvis forgot that.

Fame has many victims

I've never considered myself an Elvis fan, but I definitely consider him in the same light as Michael Jackson, Cassius Clay, Norma Jean Dougherty, Frances Gumm, Howard Hughes, and so many others whose undeniable gifts and abilities were eclipsed by the machinery of fame until each in turn became caricatures, victims, or both. This letter certainly fits the pattern of Elvis' increasing disconnection from reality, and everybody knows how that ended up.

Often one person's fame exacts a toll on others. For example, Elvis' bodyguard (and former middleweight karate champion) Bill Wallace, whose reputation never recovered from Elvis' black belt...

And I especially dig the

And I especially dig the fact The King was loaded when he went to see Tricky.. and probably Tricky was loaded too. Ha ha!

And it gets better: Elvis thought of himself as Jewish.. and Tricky was an anti-semite.

Oh, the ironies!
