Books: Shelf Help for Mother's Day
If their "Mother's Day Shopping Guide" is any indication, Barnes and Noble takes a rather dim view of maternal reading habits.
Categories that warrant 40 percent off before Sunday include: "Biographies and Memoirs," "Food and Wine," "Homes and Hobbies," "New Fiction," and "Self-Improvement, Inspiration, and Humor.'
But the pink ghetto in Borders may win this week's catfight. A quick stroll past the Mom-bait table in a Washington, D.C. store today revealed not just a cornucopia of hot pink, cherub-encrusted photo frames and a healthy portion of the "Chicken Soup for the __ Soul" (Grandma, Chocolate Lovers, etc.) empire, but such titles as:
"Don't Go To the Cosmetics Counter Without Me," (7th Edition),
"Busy Woman's Slow Cooker Recipes," (Tagline: "Make 'em happy. Come home to dinner."),
"You, Staying Young,"
and,
"God Thinks You're Wonderful, Mom!"
You know what I want for Mother's Day this year? A wireless mouse. Let me know when you catch up, big B bookstores.

Oh yeah; As Naomi Wolff said, it's gotten way worse for women since 9/11. Just look at the reincarnation of sexist commercials. Women screaming over nothing! Only women cleaning up after piggy son. Only women do laundry. Truck commercials openly revile anything that may reek of womanliness.
I think we should go to B&N and complain. That list is disgusting!
Laura, it is rather offensive, I agree. But I disagree that it is an assumption. I believe it is part of a certain strategy to keep us in "our proper place", i.e., in the kitchen, or doing our lovely hobbies, or getting pretty and staying young, lest our husbands (who are bald, don't die their remaining hair nor moustache and beard, developed an envyable beer belly at the stunning age of 25 and feel they need a trophy wife) change us for a newer model. It is discusting ... And what is it with the color pink anyway?? Gosh, I have to teach my son that colors are gender-free!

Yes, it is evil corporate bull[deleted]. I agree. But also the big bookstores suck, and they are paid to place books where they do.
Sad thing is, there are women all over the United States who those books are perfect for, or at least who will appreciate receiving them because they don't know better, care, or haven't had access to the education that would help them rise above it.
And that makes me shudder, as a woman.

Oh, yuck! Some males have had their heads stuck up where the sun doesn't shine -- again!!
This reminds me too much of the 1950s.
When is it every going to stop?
I'm 71 years old and I'm getting verrrry tired of this ... sighhh

I'm curious what you all want for Mother's Day...anyone want to share that here?

Enough whining, already. Nobody respects a whiner. Why don't ya'll shut yer collective pie hole and get back in the kitchen, where you belong?

Do tell, V. What type of education do you recommend to women that might help the poor creatures "rise above" the urge to read about food and wine or fiction, memoirs or humorous stories?
You are all part of the problem, and yet, all you do is complain. Evil corporate bull[deleted]? Tell that to the cashier next time you're in line at Costco, Walmart or Barnes and Noble.

Miki,
What makes you think that "males" devised this list? I know several women working in marketing today and they are no different from their male counterparts in that they are after the very same thing - your money.

Yep. It is as I thought. Aside from complaints, none of you have anything further to say. I thought you were a bunch of angry, man-hating lesbians for a minute there.
Or, perhaps, you've realized that woman are as responsible for this list as men? And considering that, you realize that you have absolultely nothing to complain about?
Or, could it be that you've realized that this stupid list is nothing to complain about in the first place?
