CD Review: Lil Wayne - Tha Carter III

mojo-photo-lilwaynecarter.jpgDelays are never, ever a good sign. If the release of your highly-anticipated creative work keeps getting pushed back, it's pretty much a given that when it finally emerges, it'll be bloated and uneven, overcooked in spots and raw in others. I'd hoped mixtape master Lil Wayne would prove the exception to this rule, but the long-delayed Tha Carter III (in stores today) is more mixed bag than mixtape, with brief hints of the head-spinning magic that made his bootleg releases so exciting marred by dull (if financially successful) attempts at mainstream appeal.

For a while yesterday, The New York Times web site had Weezy on the tip-top of the front page, and in the article, Jon Pareles claims that the 25-year-old rapper is finally aiming for accessibility, having "already gone as far as he can within hip-hop." He's right to call lead single "Lollipop," with its auto-tune melody and straightforward beat, a piece of easy-to-digest "bait" meant to draw listeners into Lil Wayne's world. Okay, I'll bite, and Tha Carter III definitely has more satisfying fare. "A Milli," with its glacial beat and insistent vocal loop, provides a perfect canvas for Wayne's wild lyrical turns: "I don’t owe you like two vowels / But I would like for you to pay me by the hour / And I’d rather be pushin' flowers / Than to be in the pen sharin showers." Sometimes surreal and often hilarious, Wayne claims his lyrics are improvised, and while their stream-of-consciousness flow seems off-the-cuff, their complex rhymes and quick puns are often astonishing.

Wayne's strange, soaring lyrics were a highlight of his mixtapes, which were also exciting for their choice of unlikely-to-ever-be-legally-cleared samples, from Mims to the Beatles. However, on Tha Carter III, that populist instinct seems to have led to middle-of-the-road pablum like the Babyface-featuring "Comfortable," a generic slice of sunny R&B whose "twist," lyrics that tell a girlfriend not to take Weezy for granted, just feels cheap. The multicolored diversity of the mixtapes seems to clash here: the album features no less than 13 different producers on its 18 tracks, ending up scattershot and overextended.

Wayne still may be right to proclaim himself the "best rapper alive," and there are enough clever lines and tongue-twisting acrobatics on Tha Carter III to justify Jay-Z's calling him his "heir" in a guest appearance on the somber "Mr. Carter." When it's straightforward, it's great: the Kanye West-produced "Let the Beat Build," with its basic gospel loop and piano line, hints at a New Orleans-referencing style, at once playful and mournful for Wayne's hometown. But too often, the album has been over-polished, to the point that Wayne's sharp wit has been dulled. But hey, I'm sure he'll have another brilliant mixtape out in a few weeks anyway.

Tha Carter III is out now on Cash Money/Universal.

you really think wayne could be the best rapper alive? jesus christ... i'd really like to type out an intelligent response listing reasons why he isn't, and who could be, but what you said is too ignorant to warrant it (for the readers, try: black thought, percee p, joell ortiz, nas, q-tip, MED, mos def, nyoil).
his lyrical skills are okay, but he doesn't have anything else that would make him the best mc alive, i actually started laughing on the track "Mr. Carter" when he compared himself to pac, biggie and jay-z.

A lot of people still try to discount Wayne, while name dropping Black Thought, Mos Def and Immortal Technique as superior talents. To me, this is as ignorant as discounting Pollock or Miro because their surreal or abstract works are not as well understood as Rivera's murals - in the art world, I get the most satisfaction by taking in a work and carefully peeling back the layers and trying to develop an understanding of what the artist is putting forth. With Wayne, this is a challenge for most people - his stream of consciousness, here, there and everywhere flow is probably a little scary for the type of person that would look at a Pollock and say, "That's nothing, my kid could paint that!"

I think Nas puts it best in his new single:

"Try telling Bob Dylan, Bruce and Billy Joel they can't sing what's in their soul.."

I think Wayne is writing from his soul and if it comes out a little sloppy, that is how it's supposed to be - he's not your stuck in 1999 "socially conscious" rapper - that gimmick has been played out anyway with Rawkus/DefJux/OKplayer anyway.

Wayne reminds me so much of Charles Mingus - true visionary, misunderstood, wild, daring, taste for drugs, taste for women .. prolific and always thinking.

I used to listen to all the mainstream rappers until I realized they're mostly crap, including wayne -- with the exception of just a few songs here and there.

I moved on to Aesop, Hieroglyphics, Josh Martinez, Grouch, Eligh, and of course the Living Legends

ok i will be completely honest...i'm a fan of wayne & all rappers that spit real lyrics but after all the hype and waiting and all the talk about how the carter 3 would be this great body of work i feel let down. this album wasn't horrible but it wasn't great. the lyrics on most of them were hot but the actual quality of it doesn't deliver. C2, the drought, all the songs he was featured on were much better. jay z, kanye, rick ross, lupe fiasco, and a few other mc's put out better albums the majority of which had much less hype. a classic is something u can listen 2 over and over again w/o it getting old. with the exception of Mr. Carter, tie my hands, and a couple others the majority of these songs are just average. phone home was trash and common's misunderstood was better than wayne's especially the beat. i'm still gonna listen 2 wayne but this album is not up 2 par with the rest of his stuff. i'm a fan but seriously ppl need 2 stop riding. i call it how i see it & u can disagree but my position stands

i'm just reading some the comments listed. how can anyone under 30 know what the hell a classic song is??? I am not trying to limit lil wayne's lyrical skills because he does say some catchy lines. however, there is always room for improvement. However, what he does have is personality and a great delivery.

I honestly think that Lil Wayne is the best rapper in the game right now, i mean think about it who else is coming out with as much material. What other rap artist can really say the stuff he says just freestyling, hes ill. The Carter 3 is Fire! every song on there is great, the song la la coulda had a better beat but the hook and lyrics are sick. Wayne has grown alot as a artist in the past few years, nobody in the game right now can seem to touch him, his flow, lyrics or swagger. Alot of people may agree or disagree, but i feel Carter 3 is classic u have to really listen to it. i'm not d riding i'm just telling the truth, hes the best at this point and that doesn't look like it will change anytime soon. He has 08' easily the only other rapper that should come out will a great album is Nas, but even his cd probably won't touch wanyne's.

I believe that everyone is entitled to his/her own opinion, but straight business, The Carter III is not that hot at all. Wayne is a great talent in profession, but to me and many other true hip hop heads, he sold out on this album. Besides the fact that its not worth half the anticipation, you cant proclaim yourself as “The best rapper alive,” and get on a track with arguably the best rapper of all time and bow down to him. I think that Jay is the best, but I respect the hell out of Kanye b/c he said even though Jay is his idol, his mentor, or whatever you want to call it, he still wanted to be the best, and to be the best, you got to beat the best. “ …New Jack City, got to keep my brother, but to be #1, got to beat my brother. On that diamonds remix, I swore I spazzed but my big brother came through and kicked my ass.” How you going to call yourself the best rapper, and spit another person’s verse on a song with the person? Any true hip-hopper knows that at the end of the day, regardless of what beats you have, or who you have doing your hook, your lyrics define you as a hip hop artist. Some of the stuff on this album is reminiscent of what we all came to love from Wayne, and some stuff on there is just straight garbage. Even in “Lollipop” he wasn’t spittin no fire, but the song was hot and original, so yeah he can get that as one of his radio hits, but on the album, again, if you are calling yourself the best rapper alive, you got to show it, and point-blank-period, he didn’t. In my opinion, Wayne been fallin’ off like this whole year. I don’t remember a real hot verse from him since that “We Takin’ Over!” When I think of the top MCs in the game today (and in the grave), I can think of at least one song that sticks out (lyrically/creatively) that separates that person from the rest of the rappers. I honestly cant think of one for Wayne, but if I’m mistaken, please let me know what track so I can check it out. That Freeway album is hotter than the Carter 3. I have the album, and listen to some tracks from time to time, so I’m far from a hater, I’m just a realist! What isn’t real is some of these people saying this is the best album of the year, best rap album ever, best of all time, and whatever else. Those people must have been doing the same drugs Wayne was doing when he made this album. I can probably take some of his stuff from the Hot Boys and that would be hotter than some of the stuff on this album.
