Hancock: Racist, a Metaphor for Racism, or Just Dumb?

mojo-photo-hancock.jpgWill Smith's new movie Hancock may have knocked little Wall-E off the box office top spot, pulling in $62 million in its first weekend, but some are finding evidence of an unsettling subtext behind the drunk-superhero shtick. Hip-hop web site SOHH.com recently posted a blog entry calling the film, well, racist:

It's just a coincidence that the first "superhero" depicted on the silver screen as a criminal, alcoholic, lazy, foul mouthed, not giving a you know what bum, living in a broken down trailer, who everybody hates including the people he saves, *just happens* to *be black.* Right? And, it's just a coincidence the one man who loves Hancock, has faith in him and truly cares about him as a person, is an idealistic white man who wants to save the entire planet. Let's call him the Anti-Bush. Oh and I can't forget his adorable little son is the only character, besides his loving father, that doesn't refer to Hancock as an a**hole… And, is it just a coincidence that Hancock only maintains his super powers if he stays away from a "beautiful" white woman who is *technically* his wife …
But, everything changes for friendless Hancock when he saves a white man with a heart of gold and an angel of a son who wants to help Hancock with his "image". (Because of course America won't accept an always drinking and cursing black man with a rap sheet, I mean who does he think he is Lil Wayne?) In a matter of minutes he convinces Hancock to turn himself in and go to jail. He even writes his press conference speech for him!
Mr. Save the World then proceeds to "civilize" the savage Hancock by convincing him to stop drinking, shave, wear a hero uniform, treat other people with kindness and consideration, and even how to land without ruining public property.

Jeez, when you put it that way. Our conspiracy-minded blogger goes on to point out that recent Hollywood superheroes played by white actors include "millionare genius scientist Iron Man" and "millionaire playboy martial art expert Batman," although I will point out that both of them are "troubled." In general, though, it's easy to see where he's coming from: as a viewer of recent queer cinema, I will say I'm getting a little sick of the homo getting brutally murdered in even the most critically-lauded films and TV shows. (Boy, that was depressing). Hollywood may have a rep for being tawdry, but they'll always follow the money.

As far as Hancock goes, I haven't seen it (I'm sorry, but Werner Hertzog gets my $10 before Will Smith does), but a commenter on the SOHH post points out there have actually been other recent black cinematic superheroes who aren't drunk: Blade, for one, and Storm from X-Men, both complex and fully-realized characters. Plus, the slovenly anti-hero isn't always black: John McClane from Die Hard, for instance. On top of everything, perhaps the film is portraying racism metaphorically, rather than evidencing it itself? Yeah, I've always been unclear on the difference there too, and the whole thing about "cleaning up the savage" really gives me the creeps. So, at the risk of blowing up the Riff, I ask you, commenters: is Hancock racist, or are bloggers just paranoid? Or, ultimately, is it hypocritical and pointless to judge works of art by our idealistic political standards?

This is a movie where a guy can fly, right? I've yet to meet a black person, or a white one, who could fly. So I think a discussion of the intricate race matrix displayed in the film has to be seen in the context that it is, yes, a fantasy. As in not real. Like all movies. If you're waiting for movies to reflect reality, you'll be waiting forever.

Guess old JP doesn't get the whole allegory aspect of some works of fiction. But hey, he sure can write some lame ass snark.

For reference, see the back-and-forth after the first Star Wars sequel/prequel The Phantom Menace: some said aliens from Jar Jar to the Fagin-like flying trader evidenced racial stereotypes, while others claimed that because it was a crazy space movie there's no way there could be any racial stereotypes in play. I'm not sure about Hancock, but the argument that theoretical fiction has no basis in reality is just silly: until you show me a movie using only its own internal references and made-up language (perhaps just a series of colors and sounds?) I'll say even Star Wars is about, you know, us.

Fiction or comedy, there is an old familiar overtone that silly white folk love to imagine...or think, or wish, or brainwash everyone else into thinking....all the black man truly wants is our superskinny, thin lipped, whiny, air headed bootyless white women.....can't you see that Gomer?

This weak white man convinced this black superman that prison is the way to show his value.
The white woman would rather live a lie and trick the whiteman into thinking he can take care of her with no job and a pipe dream than go through hell fighting along side the blackman. After being in love with the blackman for centuries these two never gave each other a passionate kiss or made love one last time. Like in the movie Ghost. Hollywood is a racist machine.

I guess if a couple of supernatural beings who were specifically created for one another can't make it, there's no hope for a normal interracial couple. Although, I do prefer the "it's too hard, society won't approve" message over the good old "it jus aint christian" arguement.
I did notice the incorporation of the "teach the dumb black buck to be a man" (Mike Tyson Cus D'Amato) story. However, that doesn't make the film racist because hancock can fly... and LOTR is about men of middle earth fighting the forces of evil, not white Jesus leading whites into battle against Africans, Arabs, and Asians... and "Birth of a Nation" can't be racist because the actors portraying blacks are actually whites in makeup... pfft these "conspiracy-minded" people are so silly.

Are you the writer Caucasian? You sound like it. Why because typical of a "white" to steal the ideas of someone else and use them in your paid-for article, as opposed to spending the money on a box office ticket (which no doubt your white-ass can afford). No, instead you opt to use in part the writings of an unknown blog commenter to help bring you a bigger audience. Why not give the writer credit? No, of course not. Might as well be true to your caucasian forebearers.
What's even worse you do what all white liberals do and try to fuse "queers" with Blacks. Shame on you but then you already know what you did is wrong!

Lucille: While I did include a direct link and give credit to SOHH.com, where I first saw this story, you're right, I did not name the author, which I probably should have. He is one Minister Jasiri X, who apparently posted a version of this piece on his MySpace page originally, at http://blog.myspace.com/jasirix.

We snuck into see this lame movie, and oh my, it sure is one racist piece of trash.

View it for yourself, and find a way of doing that without paying too.

But don't go paying money towards this piece of trash, there's only one way to stop movies like this being made.

Don't pay to see them.

I agree with the blogger, the undertones in this film are racist. My question, however, is why did Will Smith, who is one of the most prominent black actors in films at the moment, take this role after having read the script? Is it just me? I think that's the real issue. Or maybe he's just stupid.

I saw this movie at free preview in June. It is most definitely racist trash. Even I, a white person, could see that.

I agree wholeheartedly. We should not ever put black people alongside white people in movies unless the white man is the underdog. Otherwise it's racist.

Who said Will is smart enough to read the racism. In this script Will must view himself as the other within the text in order to grasp how his image is used. Most black actors are not well read in how their likeliness is used to sell a product and advance white supremacy. I don't mean to sound arrogant or rude but most blacks in Hollywood are just not that smart in race relations unless someone uses the n-word or the racism is overt. In this script if Will just asked himself not just why doesn't he get the girl but how does he loose the girl. That's the story. How does (Superman) loose the girl to an out of work idealist when (Superman) has been the love of her life for centuries.
