Oliver Stone on the President's Son
The barely credible drama of the Bush family has been compared before to the Kennedys, the Corleones, and even the Macbeths, so perhaps it was only a matter of time before Oliver Stone took it on.
And now he has.
Here's the trailer for W., the new Stone movie that takes viewers through the 43rd president's action-packed life. Josh Brolin—who apparently got really involved in the role—plays our president from his time as a college student through the days leading up to the invasion of Iraq.
Stone is no supporter of Bush, and the movie is sure to be unflattering.
Still, it doesn't look like there will be any big surprises in W. Bad student, bad businessman, bad governor, bad president. Sprinkle on a little drug use and alcoholism and it's the standard bad Bush presentation. And because this is Oliver Stone, W. will probably be full of lies. That's too bad, because there's not really much need for embellishment in this story.
One made up moment in the film occurs when George Bush Sr. is elected president: "I'll never get out of Poppy's shadow," W. tells his wife. "They'll all keep saying what's the boy ever done … I mean who ever remembers the son of a president?"
The future first lady then reportedly gives a deeply ironic three-word answer: " John Quincy Adams."
W. appears in theaters October 17.

I for one cannot wait to see this groundbreaking feature film. If Oliver Stone stays true to his Any Given Sunday roots (he's made other flicks too, right?) it should be an honest portrayal of the trials and tribulations of the president, seen through the eyes of one who's probably not intellectually equipped for the job.
They really seemed to have captured the ethos of Bush 41.
October 17: See Oliver Stone film
November 4: Cast vote for Bob Barr
Can't wait for an exciting fall!

Mr. Stone's writing credits include the wonderful 2004's Alexander. Yes, the one with Angelina Jolie. The one that goes in my "so bad its good" category. My best hope is that this movie can at least be bad enough to be awesome.

That's just what Bush needs before he leaves office, a good, solid kick in the nut's. I hope he pukes all over his office afterwards.

["Who's Bob Barr?"]
The guy I'll be voting for in the presidential race on November 4th.
I sure won't waste my vote on Barack McCain or John Obama.
Because I'm looking for Change.
The Real Thing.
Not just an undefined slogan coming from one wing of the Oligarchy Party.

Geez......after living it for almost 8 years, the last thing I'm gonna do (well, other than vote for McSame) is go slap down $10 to watch a condensed version. F*@$ that!
Bob Barr is the Libertarian Party (aka, I-Only-Care-About-Myself-and-My-Money Party) Candidate for the 2008 Pres. Election (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Barr)....another guy I wouldn't waste a vote on.

I hear what you're saying about McCain and Obama, but this is like saying I'm going to eat dirt because I won't waste my time eating urine or feces.

To Chris G: Bob Barr is the Libertarian presidential candidate, a maybe-spoiler who -could- take votes away from McCain by wooing independent-yet-socially/fiscally-more-conservative voters. Course, your response could be patent sarcasm, in which case it's partly credible: aside from a stint on the Colbert Report, it's unlikely no one outside of hard-core politicos or libs know who he is.
Re: Oliver Stone.
I'm constantly amused at who continues to bankroll his ideas and I'm further bemused why in so many cases the writing is fixated on embellishment and how the concept cinema verite has been reworked and mauled (in some cases) by O.S. For a director and writer whose last (ahem) acclaimed movie may have been Nixon (probably better seen as Altman's adaptation of Secret Honor), it's simultaneously exactly what we'd expect, and yet baffling because of the question that my mind continues to manufacture:
could this be, perhaps, just a bit soon, and do we -really- need an unflattering biopic of the worst American leader since Harding?

That should read "it's unlikely anyone outside of..." knows who he is. Excuse the grammar: I've no caffeine about.

That trailer doesn't do much to spark my interest, though I am very interested to see the movie. It should at least wipe the smirk off of his face, in that way only Oliver Stone can do....Karl Rove's character doesn't look quite pudgy enough.

"And because this is Oliver Stone, W. will probably be full of lies."
"Full" of lies? Isn't that itself somewhat of an embellishment?
Oliver Stone certainly has always taken dramatic license, and has never denied it. But to say or imply his works are "full of lies" is itself rather the very definition of dramatic license, is it not?
So okay, I'll take your tit for dramatic tat, Mr. Daniel Luzer, as a humorous dig at Mr. Stone.
But nothing too serious.
One must remember that dramatized accounts of ANY event, especially POLITICAL in nature, have always - and I mean ALWAYS - been the norm, whether in Hollywood or any other dramatic venue.
Just when it "goes too far" - and/if when it doesn't - is the $10,000 question.
Some critics like to point to - say, the scene in "Born on the 4th of July" that falsely depicts the protagonist, Ron Kovic, at a rally (or was it a funeral? -I don't even remember) as an example of Stone's "lying," when it fact it a mere dramatic license. It certainly was not some sort of fundamental distortion of the story of Ron Kovic in question, or what he did and said that is reported.
Others would like to make fun of Stone for "JFK," yet he only was repeating what had been written and talked about for many years, and by many different people of many various political persuasions. The many people of high esteem (such as Mark Lane, or the former cabinet member in Reagan's administration - Richard Schweiker) who have believed in a conspiracy certainly are numerous - the fact that they may be wrong (or at least wrong about certain things) is no reason to make fun of the Oliver Stone. In fact, the conspiracy nay-sayers should be grateful to him for bringing these arguments and theories to the forefront of the public mind so that they could be discussed, and either dismissed or accepted. There can be no debate without first having ATTENTION, and without DEBATE and DISCUSSION, there can be no evolution of understanding, or any refinement and sifting of known facts.
So do I respect Oliver? Yes. Was his "Alexander the Great" , despite many acceptable and even great scenes ultimately nonetheless rather dull? Yes.

Bizona, you said, "Bob Barr is the Libertarian Party (aka, I-Only-Care-About-Myself-and-My-
Money Party) Candidate for the 2008 Pres. Election"
Well, you have a point perhaps, for libertarians are not always very well versed say, in our long labor struggle history, such as how long it took to get a 40 hour work week (down form virtual "wage slavery").
But at the same time, libertarians often understand other realities that mainstream republicans and democrats seem completely unable to grasp, such as the simple fact that the drug war is a crock of feces. And Barr (as well as Ron Paul) certainly are able to wrap their minds around the fact that the School of Americas is Murder Inc., and should be abolished.
Now if Democrats like Kucunich, or former representative Joe Kennedy, were the norm, then it might appear that such libertarians were merely copy-catting to get votes.
But unfortunately, even after the 8 years of Clinton, and a Democratic majority in both houses at one point during those 8 years, neither the drug war (or at least, its most egregious aspects) nor the SOA were abolished, and Obama and his supporters has not yet made its destruction part of his presidential agenda.
So, unless you're for such idiocies as the drug war and the SOA, why not at least give Mr. Barr some respect? I certainly respect Dennis Kucunich and Jim McGovern and former representative Cynthia McKinney etc. etc. (All of them want to see the SOA GONE! FOREVER!)
The Libertarians may not be your cup of tea, but that is no reason to reject allies in the great spirit of bipartisan politics, is it?
Why, to do that -- that's just damned divisive! Why not at least see the good in Mr. Barr? To not do that would be like mentioning nothing but adultery whenever Bill Clinton's name comes up, even though he left us comparatively rich, deficit and debt wise (less of both, that is, not more!). And despite the many criticisms about his war in Bosnia, at least it didn't last forever, and kill so many, and use so much money, and depend on so many lies, and evoke the so called government "right to torture" etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.
See - I'm a reasonable guy! Why can't anyone else be? With my great nature, I should be KING for LIFE, LORD DUNE OF EARTH! by GOD, and HAVE ABSOLUTE POWER!!! GRRRRR!

I truly dared to dream that Stone would make a film about The Secret War in Laos and the tragic Hmong Genocide which continues to this day....rather than invest his energy into exploring the shallow mind of the Creator of the Axis of Evil.
After of 8 years of: "You are either with us or against us diplomacy," I am counting the days until Obama wins and Bush will be just a forgotten nightmare.

Bob Barr came to the fore in the mid 1990s as a scoundrel of major proportions. He took his wife to get an abortion and ran on being anti-abortion. He kept a mistress whom he later maried after divorcing his wife as she was recuoerating from the abortion. he is a sterling charcter of the GW bush variety as wells the Gingrich ilk.

["Bob Barr came to the fore in the mid 1990s as a scoundrel of major proportions. ... He kept a mistress..."]
Sounds like he's cut from the Bill Clinton mode, to me.
You remember him: The Impeached President who promised "the most ethical administration in history" when running for office in 1992..?
I simply won't vote for another DemoPublican or RepubliCrat.
If it's an EX-Republican, or an EX-Democrat, I'll take that option any day over an un-reformed one, just to make a point.

Ah, Toby Jones as Herr Karlheinz Turdblossom! Jones, you may recall, played Truman Capote in the British entry into the recounting of how *In Cold Blood* came to be written. He's a superb impressionist and a fine actor. I can't wait to see it.
