I'm not sure there is a winner on this issue. We need to figure out why people are using drugs and really fight the drugs that are harmful to OTHERs. If someone wants to harm himself by doing drugs isn't that his right? As long as he isn't hurting others it should be his right to do whatever he wants.
It's odd that there isn't a fight against alcohol. Why? There are 30,000 alcohol related deaths a year (drunk driving deaths in particular). There's not a war on this. Could it be because the government is taxing it? I think so.

Nope: taxes is not the reason. If marijuana were legal, it would be taxed, most likely as 'high' as alchohol or the new tobacco taxes. I think the more accurate answer is to look where the huge illegal black market profits are going. *those* are the folks that keep it illegal as they would not have their tax free profits off the books. Make marijuana legal and move toward decriminalization of other 'relatively' safe commonly used recreational 'drugs'. It is easier to fight an epidemic in the open than behind closed doors. Btw this board tags our postings so the links that show up here have nothing to do with my intentions.
It should be his right to do as he pleases with or without drugs... As long, like you said, he doesn't harm others...
Now comes the tricky part and when it happens it's NEVER easy to deal with with.
What do you do when they harm others?
Which is sure to happen and which I then have to pay for, which is harming me.
This is not OK.
Publicly funded drug treatment is expensive as is prison and neither one guarantees anything.
Also expensive would be the government "looking into" WHY people use drugs in the first place...
Which is none of the governments business.

The search for altered states is inherent in human nature, even animals get drunk or actively search psychoactive plants. Prohibition can't possibly work.
Ask any cop which kind of partygoers he likes most: people on pot or xtc, or people on alcohol. And just guess which overdosed kind the hospital receives most on a regular saturday night. And that's not just because more people use alcohol...
Government's job is to *defend* our rights, not violate them. The police should be protecting marijuana users (and for that matter prostitutes), not arresting them. That they squander taxpayer money on this is just icing on the turd. Legalizing marijuana would at a stroke greatly reduce the prison population of the US (the "Land of the Free" is the world's #1 incarcerating nation), reduce violent crime, reduce racism, and reduce the corruption and mayhem in the US' southern neighbor. It would also do wonders for California, and cancer patients.
Why are green plants worse than contaminated power plants?

How are users and sellers of green plants some how worse than acid spewing factories that contaminate water, soil, air etc. Contamination produces lead based babies, lead in polar bears. Garbarage in every place that humans sit at. Every city of any size with its halo of brown toxic, wafing in the air. Oh and of course all the arms industries whose only aim is to kill. Why is that legal and allowed? But Mexico and other contries cant have a legal drug trade.
Why? Because Mexico would then become rich out of control, and her citizens would no longer have to work in the USA. Who would pick up after the US?
So keep them drugs illegal. Hell have a war on them. Make violence a way of life.
Welcome to the future of the USA, just go down to civil war torn Mexico and take a look. The future is already here.

Care to go undercover on the real drug war? Weed is not the what war is waged upon. Its the much harder drugs that are targeted. Its only the politicians that push canabis busts.
