| Karen Olsson (" Up Against Wal-Mart"), a former editor for the Texas Observer, writes primarily about labor and politics for such publications as Texas Monthly, The Nation, and the Washington Post. Last year the Columbia Journalism Review prõled Robert Dreyfuss (" The Thirty-Year Itch"), naming him one of the "best unsung investigative journalists working in print."   When Charles Bowden (" Outback Nightmares & Refugee Dreams") drove into the outback north of Adelaide to report on Australia's refugee camps, the assignment hit close to home. In his case, that's Tucson, Arizona, near the desert that is the most porous section of the U.S. border. It is also the setting for his latest book, Down by the River: Drugs, Money, Murder, and Family. Twenty-̃ve-year-old Norwegian-born photographer Jonas Bendiksen (" Living in an Age of Fire") has photographed extensively in the former Soviet republics and in the Middle East. | ||||
 JoAnn Wypijewski (" Living in an Age of Fire") grew up in Buffalo, New York, in an extended family that included an uncle who worked at Lackawanna's Bethlehem Steel mill all his life. She learned of the town's Yemeni community while working on a documentary about Milton Rogovin, who had photographed them in the early 1970s. Even then, she recalls, their rooms might be decorated with both Arabic tapestries and pennants for Buffalo sports teams. Wypijewski writes for The Nation, Harper's, and other publications. | ||||
| James Whitlow Delano (" A Tale of Two Chinas") won the prestigious 2000 Alfred Eisenstaedt Award from the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism for his photography from China. Currently the dean of the Graduate School of Journalism at the University of California, Berkeley, Orville Schell (" A Tale of Two Chinas") has written nine books about China and is a frequent commentator on Chinese issues. Canadian internist Kevin Patterson (" The Patient Predator") is the author of The Water in Between, a travel book about travel books and about sailing across the Pacĩc Ocean.
