March 5, 2001 Francine Goldstein is an aviation industry executive whose largest contribution coincided with lobbying by President Clinton to overturn a European ban on equipment manufactured by a company run by her housemate and business partner Sandra Wagenfeld (No. 114, $313,850). For the most part, her political giving mirrored that of Wagenfeld: For many checks that Goldstein wrote -- from $1,000 for Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) to $100,000 for the Democratic National Committee -- there is an identical check from Wagenfeld, made out to the same person, for the same amount, on the same day. Goldstein shares a $4.7 million estate in Westport, Connecticut, with Wagenfeld, whose late husband reportedly named Goldstein as a "life tenant" of the estate in his will. -- Pam Smith | | |
