Jeffrey Levy-Hinte (with Jeanne) March 5, 2001 As an independent filmmaker, Levy-Hinte knows the value of last-minute financing. Last October, with the election just weeks away, he and his wife Jeanne, a writer at his New York indie film production house Post 391, gave $350,000 to the Democrats. Post 391 also underwrote Al Gore and other Democratic candidates. According to the Center for Responsive Politics, Levy-Hinte's firm ranked fifth among film production companies for campaign contributions (just behind DreamWorks and Time Warner) and 16th overall in the entertainment industry. All told, the production house contributed $479,000, all of it to Democrats. In 1999, Post 391 merged with Forensic films to become "one of the most active downtown indie production companies," according to the Village Voice. Levy-Hinte was the producer behind the Sundance favorite "High Art" starring Ally Sheedy, and was an editor of the documentary "When We Were Kings" about the Ali-Foreman fight in Zaire. -- Brett Coker | | |
