Republican Dede Scozzafava (which might mean “tainted beans” in Italian) showed moxie yesterday. The far right had sent up and promoted an extremist to run against her and the Democrat. Sarah Palin, Fred Thompson, and others endorsed and pumped large sums into this candidacy, perverting the small Upstate NY congressional race. On Saturday, Dede dropped out, and yesterday endorsed the Democrat. I can’t recall ever seeing anything like this. It says something about the state of the Republican party right now. They are in internal insurrection. But tomorrow, thanks to Scozzafava, the tea-baggers will lose. Wasabi, anyone?

FACT:

Mother Jones was founded as a nonprofit in 1976 because we knew corporations and the wealthy wouldn't fund the type of hard-hitting journalism we set out to do.

Today, reader support makes up about two-thirds of our budget, allows us to dig deep on stories that matter, and lets us keep our reporting free for everyone. If you value what you get from Mother Jones, please join us with a tax-deductible donation today so we can keep on doing the type of journalism 2021 demands.
