Nation’s Top Magazine Awards Select Mother Jones as Finalist for General Excellence, Profile Writing; One of Top Podcasting Awards Honors Reveal for Best News and Politics

The nation’s most prestigious magazine awards announced that Mother Jones is a finalist in two categories—for general excellence and profile writing—and one of the top podcasting awards recognized Reveal as the best news & politics podcast

“The political change shaking this country is like nothing we’ve seen in our lifetime, and yet it also creates an opportunity for journalism to demonstrate just how important it is to protecting our democracy,” said Clara Jeffery, editor-in-chief of the Center for Investigative Reporting, which produces Mother Jones and Reveal. “Over the last year, our reporters, editors, and producers have doubled down on their commitment to holding the powerful to account, and we have no plans to let up as we approach the midterm election in November.”

The American Society of Magazine Editors’ general excellence award is considered the top honor for magazines in the United States and is based on a news organization’s array of content across platforms. Mother Jones competed against other news outlets focused on literature, science, and politics. This is the fourth year in a row that Mother Jones has been named a finalist for general excellence, and it has been so honored 14 times since 2001. It won in 2001, 2008, 2010, and 2025; in 2017, it also won magazine of the year.

In the magazine profile writing category, judges recognized Mother Jones’ article “The Unflinching Courage of Taylor Cadle,” by Rachel de Leon and Julia Lurie. It explores how a 12-year-old girl in Florida was raped by her adoptive father, then wrongly charged for lying about it by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office. The investigation became one of Mother Jones’ top-read stories of the year, and readers flooded the comments section of the Polk County Sheriff’s Office social media pages, demanding answers.
The Awards for Excellence in Audio, also known as the Ambies, honored Reveal as the best news & politics podcast of the year, citing its broad investigative reporting and, in particular, its investigation by Noah Lanard and Isabela Dias into “Trump’s Deportation Black Hole.” The show was also a nominee for best podcast of the year and best reporting for its episode “The Landlord Gutting America’s Hospitals,” which examines how real estate company Medical Properties Trust bought up hospitals and then leased them back to health care systems, resulting in dozens of its hospitals going bankrupt and closing.
