Meat Is Murder On The Environment
A kilogram (2.2 pounds) of beef is responsible for more greenhouse gas emissions and other pollution than driving for 3 hours while leaving all the lights on back home. This, according to New Scientist’s Daniele Fanelli, is the conclusion of a study out of the National Institute of Livestock and Grassland Science in Japan. The team looked at the effects of beef production on global warming, water acidification and eutrophication, and energy consumption. They focussed on calf production, animal management, and the effects of producing and transporting feed, to calculate the total environmental load of a portion of beef. They concluded that a kilogram of beef is responsible for the equivalent of the amount of CO2 emitted by the average European car every 250 kilometers (155 miles), and burns enough energy to light a 100-watt bulb for nearly 20 days. The calculations did not include the impact of managing farm infrastructure and transporting the meat, so the total environmental load is even higher. . . Still want that burger? How about one of these instead? Yum yum. JULIA WHITTY

Great stuff. Here's a quick reminder though. Even soy, the most efficient source of protein in the plant world, is not as efficient in terms of protein produced per acre as carp, tilapia, or catfish.
A farm with a fish pond that produces rice, corn, or wheat and feeds it to the carp, tilapia, or catfish in the pond will produce significantly more protein per unit of land than a soy farm. I'm not sure about water and energy usage. I'd have to check on that. I think it may be lower as well.
So, when considering protein sources, remember to pick up some local (or as local as you can get) tilapia, carp, or catfish, if your concern is environmental.
If, on the other hand, you don't like eating anyone with a face, stick to the soy. I can certainly respect that.
My problem is that I'd want to avoid killing anyone with or without a face and would have to become a fruitarian (frugivore?) which gets really difficult, even going by the formal definition of fruit that includes tomatoes, pepper, cucumber, etc.
But, fruit is a symbiotic relationship. All else is killing for food. Maybe nectar and honey are OK. Regardless, I can't go this far, personally. So, I'll try to make the best environmental choices I can and reduce most meats in my diet and favor herbivorous fish.
Anyone know how some of the native species are for environmental considerations? Bison? Venison?
Scott, When is the last time you ate catfish? Try some possum, but cook it well. Goes good in a stew with some goobers. Walk the talk man.

Bubba Jones,
You asked, 'When is the last time you ate catfish?'
Last night. Yum. I also like Tilapia. I haven't found carp in my supermarket yet.

Scott, Did you steam it or fry it? What seasoning did you use?

Bubba, Fried with Cajun seasoning, as sold in my supermarket with or without the seasoning for the same price. Buying it pre-seasoned, just spray some oil on the pan, fry for a few minutes, done. Easy, delicious, and inexpensive.
