Your statement poses an
Your statement poses an interesting question one that invites yet another question: what is the proper function of government. For some the answer to that question is simple: to protect our basic fundamental rights to life, liberty and property. Hence the obvious need for police, firefighters, the military and the courts. For others the proper role for government is more far reaching to include such matters as needs and wants, including food, shelter, clothing, healthcare, etc... For those who embrace the former, there is a genuine belief that the two conflict. Inevitably a government seeking to mandate such needs and wants must deprive its citizens of their ability to choose thus eroding heir liberty while also depriving citizens their right to property. Considering it is our labor and energies being expended, it is also our livelihoods and lives which are being restricted, thus assaulting each of our basic fundamental and inalienable rights, and for what, so that a government monopoly with a poor track record of managing the affairs and resources of its people can have yet another opportunity at mismanagement fraud and out right theft?
Life, liberty and property??
In the U.S. Declaration of Independence, it's not "life, liberty and property." It's "life, liberty and pursuit of happiness." In any case, I find it odd that property should be put ahead of health. Why? I'd rather put good health ahead of property and make property a common property rather than individual property.
The role of government....
The belief in limited government is a Heinleinesque fantasy. Government, with all the flaws inherent in any large enterprise, if run on a reasonably rational and fair basis, which the U.S. government, on average is, acts as an ameliorating authority, force, entity against the "Golden Rule", those who have the most gold make the rules. We drink clean water, breathe clean air, drive on well-maintained roads, are (generally) safe on our streets, are, again generally, well-educated, eat food that, with a little discretion, is safe and nutritious, can earn a living, worship as we please, etc. ad infinitum, all on the government/taxpayer dime, and government is a failure? I would not live in a Republican world. Nor, I suspect, would the anonymous poster, nor would anyone else capable of independent thought.

So...I actually don't like
So...I actually don't like the "socialized" police force, or military, terribly much (disclosure: I'm the happy son of three USAF vets). Through such entities, the government does monopolize the use of force, which ultimately means that they can push around those they want--competing nation-states, Third World villagers, or potentially the US populace if we ever get too "uppity"/revolutionary.
Monopolies generally aren't that great idea, and frequently result in decreased efficiency, affordability, quality, and accountability. Again, just look at the actual state of our "socialized" police, military, schools, roads, etc...perhaps it'd be best if many of these were provided by competing private companies, nonprofits, and/or local voluntary community ownership, participation, and control (as opposed to nonvoluntary, forcibly tax-funded, increasingly federalized government bureacracies).

First of all, Anonymous, I would like to thank you for bringing this up. Both you and those arguing with you have helped me try and look at the big picture. It seems to boil down to just how much control the government can have. We have seen the failures that were Russian and Chinese communism (where the government had absolute control of everything), but they have had a big problem with corruption down there as I have witnessed firsthand. Your latest argument has been how dangerous a monopoly can be for service quality. The only thing is, you seem to be holding the government to the same standard as a company. It is commonly accepted that the ultimate goal of the government is to serve its country. Meanwhile, the commonly accepted goal of a company is to make a profit. Indeed, companies do try to show the world that they are caring and idealistic, but that still serves to increase revenues. I agree that if the wrong person ends up in the government, then too much power could lead to trouble, but I still feel that the odds of that are much slimmer than they would be with a business-oriented monopoly. Also, because of the balance of powers, all three branches of our government would have to mutually harbor greedy intentions to suffer the same fate as business monopolies. Furthermore, early in his presidency, Obama took steps to ensure there were dissenters involved in the decision-making process, thus avoiding the hive-mind most monopolies would suffer from. The bottom line is, as a body of individual minds, the government is not very prone to the behaviors exibited in a monopolistic company.

"Our" government is no longer ours. All of the major players are owned and sponsored by corporations who write the laws that congress votes on. Democrats and Republicans alike no longer work for the people, that includes presidents. People criticize George Bush, who got us into two wars, I was one of them. But they don't criticize Obama for continuing them when he said he would get us out, let alone getting us into another one with Iran.
