Victory in Iraq!
(And not a doping scandal to be found.)
Okay, so not in Iraq, but for Iraq, and the unity was short-lived, but still. Duct tape and soccer, they hold this crazy world together.

There's no difference ? for males anyway ? between sports and war. Both are equally enjoyable and generate the same amount of bs mythology and "heroes" which are easily transmitted from ignoramus fathers to soon-to-be ignoramus sons.
Jackie Roberson WAS a good thing for civil rights ? IF you happen to have a brain and think treating "those people" LIKE people is good. IF however, you have a tiny fear-filled brain of a white-trash fascist (meaning ? the majority of the US population), you'd know that this wasn't "all that good". Let's say you happened to a stupid teenage middle-trash white male from the south side of Chicago in the '60. Your "Jackie Roberson" logic would be resolved like this: Roberson is one of "those people". The liberals like "those people". Anybody who likes "those people" is my enemy. Now, apply this "logic" to various events:
Welfare: liberals like it because it helps "those people". I don't like.
Socialism: liberals like, Therefore, I don't like.
Unions: liberals like; I don't like.
"Survival of the fittest": liberals don't like, but I like it because it must hurt "those people".
Vietnam: liberals don't like, I must like.
Socialist Health Insurance: liberals like more welfare, welfare helps "those people"; I don't like.
Iraq: liberals don't like, I like.
Eric, the flaw in YOUR socialist logic is forgetting that most people are assholes, which is why socialism always self-destructs. The Iraqi team, btw, will GLEEFULLY continue hating each other as soon as their momentary common enemy (us) is forgotten. The history of humanity is males killing each other, with short periods of peace while the testosterone levels recharge.

Hey John, if sports are a substitute for war, then could it be sports are a GOOD thing? Do you know of anything else where people can have something in common based just on sharing the same geography? Any maybe you missed how the Iraqi team is multi-ethnic and multi-sectarian. It might be just one good event for a country where life sucks, but maybe it will mean more, like Jackie Robinson playing for the Dodgers was a big win for civil rights.

Despite some grains of truth in what you said, because I have to grant that sometimes people take a position consistent with the position people they like and opposed by people they don't like, there's one statement of yours I must object to, "The Iraqi team, btw, will GLEEFULLY continue hating each other as soon as their momentary common enemy (us) is forgotten." You don't know that. You don't know these individuals, you don't know what bond they may have, and so you have no idea what they will choose to do from this point. My guess, and it's a guess, is they'll try to keep the team together for the World Cup or whatever comes next in international soccer. I don't follow soccer enough to know. I do know that this is at least as likely as your thought that they'll immediately try to kill each other. They probably hope to be an example of how Iraqis can rise above their differences. Their efforts sure can't hurt.
