Another Miracle Brought to You By America's Unions (This Time With Pirates!)
Now that the American crew members of the Maersk Alabama have retaken the ship from four Somali pirates (USA! USA! USA!), it's important to note that like all the people involved with 
the safe landing of US Airways Flight 1549 in the Hudson River in January, the crew members of the Maersk Alabama are union members. (Thanks to Marcy Wheeler for the blog title and the meme.) The unions in question are the Seafarers International Union, which represents 12 of the 20-person crew, the Marine Engineers’ Beneficial Association (MEBA), and the International Organization of Masters, Mates & Pilots (MM&P). As former safety chairman of the Airline Pilots Association, Chesley Sullenberger, the hero pilot of Flight 1549, fought to make sure his colleagues got the training they needed to do what he did in January. And as I just heard on Fox News (and confirmed with the SIU), crew members of the Maersk Alabama received anti-piracy training from (where else?) their union. You can see an SIU member at small arms training at the union's Paul Hall Center for Maritime Training and Education in the photo to the right (more photos here). In addition to small arms training, the Hall Center offers anti-terror, basic safety, first aid, and other security-related courses.

Big difference between safety personnel trained and authorized to use legal weapons, and untrained idiots that can buy assault weapons at a local Gun Show.
The right to keep and bear arms should come with stringent safety training requirements and heavy punishments for misuse and abuse of said arms.

Funny to hear you say that - if the employees of that school had been trained in firearm use and / or allowed to carry their firearms with them on school grounds, Columbine would have been a much smaller incident.

No, no it wouldn't have. You see, everyone that died in that incident, died within the first few minutes when they had no warning of the attack. Once it came out that there were people running around with guns on the campus, people either barricaded themselves in or fled the campus, and the rest of the incident was little more than a drawn-out gunbattle.
Now if the employees had guns, yes, the assailants would have died, but not before they shot all those people.
And another thing; an armed society is not a polite society. 'Cause where there's people, there's assholes!

Carrying weapons in pirate infested waters is not the same as stockpiling weapons in suburbia for the circular purpose of preventing those same guns from being taken away.
Even in countries with proper gun laws (the U.K.), people with a legitimate need for firearms can buy them with the local Inspector's permission. Fending off pirate attacks is certainly a legitimate need.

THE SHIP HAD NO WEAPONS. Yes, we receive small arms training, as well as security training. There are union members from 3 different unions on board, MM and P, and Pilots, MEBA and the SIU. However, they had no weapons on board.

This story is not what you think it is.
Somalia is the country where the CIA undermined the very popular Islamic Courts Union Government, and they were left with fuedalism in it’s place. The water on the Somali coast has been overfished by agriprocessors, and used as a dumping ground for nuclear waste. Barrels of it washed upon the shore and no one knew what they were until people started getting sick and babies were born with birth defects.
Those “pirates” are really fishermen who have had their livelihoods destroyed and can no longer provide for thier families. They are also protecting what belongs to them. They have no navy.
Contrast it with France for instance: If you pull your yacht into a port it might cost you $5000-$10,000 in fees to dock there, sans the environmental destruction. These Somali “Pirates” are getting a bum wrap.

auntikrist and krake, I am not a rightwinger, but I do take my right to own and bear firearms seriously. I'm not talking about assault weapons. I agree with background checks but not permits or licenses for the gun. A license to kill an animal is good. These are my rights.
I grew up in Utah and Idaho, where my family hunted, and at summer camp we had both archery and marksmanship competions. I knew how to handle a weapon at 10 years old. Thats not bragging, but I did know what safety was.

If you want to limit weapons, go fight against Arms dealers shipping weapons abroad that end up in the hands of paramilitary groups or drug trafficers, or focus on weapons of war like cluster bombs and DU shells. Not citizens.

It's not about the guns
Kudos to the SIU for training their members for events they hope will never happen. Knowledge is key. Once you train people how to deal with bad situations you have to trust they will keep their wits, remember their training, plus have the courage to face the dangers, carry on, adapt, improvise, persevere and overcome.
The most powerful and effective weapon the Alabama's crew wielded in this battle was the willingness to use the knowledge they each carried with them.

Our U.S. seafaring unions have been around for a very long time. We survived the local pirates of the Regan and Bush administrations and lately Somali pirates.
The pirates and the brutal work conditions were the easier victories.
The mainstream news agencies seem all to willingly to ignore the idea that we are union men and women trained by our own union funds. One news article on FOX, all but blamed the unions for GM's problems, and the very next news article was about the hero's of the Maersk Alabama.
Let's blame the unions for building Chevys in the first place.
