Abortion Support Reaches New Low
The latest Pew poll finds that Americans are now split evenly on their opinion of abortion rights.* In an August survey 45% of respondents said they thought abortion should be illegal in all/most cases, 47% said legal. Last year same time those numbers were 41% and 54%, respectively. Whether these numbers match up to similar polls or not, the fact that the same language was used year-to-year by Pew means the data is worth noting. Yes, it's a high bar that the respondent has to agree with the all/most cases assertion, but they also had to agree with it last year and the years before that.
As this graph shows, at least according to Pew measures, support for abortion is at its lowest since 1995, opposition near its highest. That people are more entrenched in their position after a hot election year and that conservatives are feeling defensive with a progressive in the White House who's already appointed a Supreme Court Justice, these numbers are not all that surprising, if discouraging.
The survey also asked how critical people feel abortion is as a political issue. In 2006, 28% of respondents said abortion was a critical issue, in August just about half as many felt that way, 15%. These days #hcr and #climate are more the rage, and there is plenty else to get up in arms about. Still, it seems that conservatives can manage more pots on the stove; they can rally against finance reform, health care reform, Obama, et al and still keep up an effective fight against what might be secondary issues like abortion. Progressives are way too disorganized to handle such maneuvering.
*The addition of "rights" is mine. Pew asked if people are in support of legal abortions. Saying, do you support abortion, versus, do you support the right for a woman to choose is a very different question. As Kevin Drum points out, survey design is notoriously sensitive particularly when it comes to abortion.

Abortion
It's good see that more people are recognizing abortion for what it is: an American Holocaust.
abortion
I am am abortion supporter. Until a man can carry a fetus and actually give birth, he has no right to even express an opinion. It is a woman's body and her business if she does or doesn't want to have an abortion. If you don't like it, then, by God...don't have one but if I chose to have one, it's nobody's damn business but mine. I'm so sick of bleeding-heart liberals thinking for me and war-hawk republicans telling me I'm going to burn for ever in some man-made hell if iI don't believe in all that crap King James advocated back in the 1500's when he wrote his version of "God's Word"!. I'm so sick of this BS and foot=stomping, bible-pounding, speaking in 'tongues', full- of- crap holy-rollers and their sanctamonious superstitions and fear-mongering baloney. Janet Drennan
Opposition to abortion
Opposition to abortion (sorry, I mean murder) is not a matter of a person’s rights; it’s a matter of a person’s duty. You don’t have to be Sudanese to have the duty to oppose the genocide in Darfur. Likewise, you don’t have to be a woman (or a man) to have the duty to oppose the murder of pre-born humans. Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere…
A 19 October 2004 UN News
A 19 October 2004 UN News Centre article[77] titled "UNICEF adviser says rape in Darfur, Sudan continues with impunity" reported:
Armed militias in Sudan’s strife-torn Darfur region are continuing to rape women and girls with impunity, an expert from the United Nations children’s agency said today on her return from a mission to the region. Pamela Shifman, the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) adviser on violence and sexual exploitation, said she heard dozens of harrowing accounts of sexual assaults – including numerous reports of gang rapes – when she visited internally displaced persons (IDPs) at one camp and another settlement in North Darfur last week. “Rape is used as a weapon to terrorize individual women and girls, and also to terrorize their families and to terrorize entire communities,” she said in an interview with the UN News Service. "No woman or girl is safe."
Hmmm. I wonder if the women and children of Darfur (or anywhere) who are raped and become pregnant think that abortion is such a terrible idea.
Krsna
When I was a kid in N.Y. legal abortion was passed.
I was just a teenager and I supported such progressive
legislation.
I moved to Florida where progressive politics were not
so in vogue. There was the exception of Gov. Askew's
corporate income tax and the passing of the Government
in the Sunshine Law.
The anti-abortion movement ingratiated itself to many
who believed in life, the vegetarians, the anti-war. The
argument was so clear, life was life. One seldom, however,
heard about the lives of women that were lost from illegal
abortions. That's why abortion was legalized.
I'm very fond of Krishna, but unfortunately all those
beautiful pictures and stories are used to advance the cause
against abortion.
Reading the books of Bhaktivedanta Prabhupada you will
find there is plenty of support for war and even capital
punishment, but preventing the advance of a pregnancy
is the most heinous sin. I wonder if this has something to
do with the minimal rights of women in Krsna Consciousness.
You know they may not be teachers.
Baba Muktananda left us a woman teacher when he took
mahasamadhi, Gurumayi Chidvilasananda, but where do you
see women in that position in Krnsa Consciousness?
Sadgurunath Maharaj ki jay!
when life starts
If a person is legally "dead" when they no longer have brainwaves, perhaps we should consider a person legally "alive" when brainwaves begin at about 9 weeks gestation.
abortion
The reality is abortion has been around since women could get pregnant. Woman performed them on themselves.Making abortions illegal will not stop the practice of abortions. Rich women have always been able to make that choice, as we know doctors will perform it for a fee. Poor women dont' have that luxury. This is how it is with everything in this country laws don't apply to the rich.I come from a time when abortion was not legal, talk to the women who had to go to back alleys. People need to research this before they make a decision on this. There are many sides to this debate. This is MY body. I dont' need anyone making a choice for me.
I used to be
I used to be pro-choice...until I met an orphan who grew up in foster care that was pro-life.
She put the whole argument in different light and I will never support abortion again (xcept: incest, rape, and health of the mother concerns).
I dare anyone to argue for pro-choice against a pro-life orphan.
It doesn't work and the evil of your stance will stare back at you. He/she is breathing...happy...has years of memories...and will never allow a choice when it come to ending a potential life that could have easily been hers...or yours.

An abortion to save a mother's life is justifiable.
An abortion to save her lifestyle is not.
Just sickening (and monstrously selfish) . . .

I hate people's reductivist viewpoints.
it is possible to be in favor of all women having access to abortion without wanting to have one oneself.
