Iraq Study Group: "Antidemocratic"

An article in the Christian Science Monitor by Andrew Bacevich, professor of history and international relations at Boston University, calls the Iraq Study Group “antidemocratic.” Bacevich says the group is in place largely to keep citizens’ demands about the war at bay.

Which does beg the question, where has all that citizen anger that was demonstrated on a global scale before the United States invasion of Iraq all gone to? While the war is being widely criticized by media and politicians, voices of dissent in the general public have been quiet. Even after the deadliest month of combat for both American troops and Iraqi civilians, there were no major protests, marches or public outcries calling for an end to the war (with the exception of a Cindy Sheehan led protest on the steps of the Whitehouse that resulted in her arrest on Nov. 9).

Perhaps, as Bacevich suggests, Americans assume the government will take care of it. Or, they are overwhelmed at how badly things have gone. Politicians recently traveling to Iraq experienced shock and awe of their own. After a recent visit to Iraq, Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. said: "(The Iraqi government) seems to be caught in a crossfire of sectarian angst and violent actions. It’s a dangerous environment that will continue to escalate in the weeks ahead."

I strongly disagree with this assertion. Although there may be no mass protests happening, Americans voiced their outrage at the war loud and clear in the election. Voting out the war cheerleaders is a much more effective way to bring about change than a protest, and the voters should be commended for that. Instead of assuming that Americans don't care about the war, how about if we assume that Americans want to give the Democrats some time to fix the mess. They're well aware that Bush can't/won't hear them no matter how loudly they yell, so they spoke instead by voting Bush's party out of power.

The American people have been continually assaulted with lies and more lies by the abomination that is the Bush Administration. This dictatorship is still running on its steady course of destruction, and the American people have tried to stop and redirect our government by voting in Democrats. Unfortunately, the Democrats instead of seizing the moment of victory as a clear mandate from the people to oust this malignancy from our nation, concede from the get go that they will not impeach! This is more insanity and a betrayal of those of us that voted for REAL change. I cannot begin to express my outrage at Nancy Pelosi, Howard Dean and others who immediately stated that they looked forward to working cooperatively with the President. How do you cooperate with evil and with treason without becoming an accomplice yourself? And why would you want to?
Indeed, I am even more disgusted since it is becoming glaringly obvious that "We the People" are nothing more than a quaint notion, a distant memory of a country I love and no longer recognize. As for the protests, there are more than you will ever know since the mainstream media does not cover them nor do they do their jobs at keeping government honest by asking and investigating the truly tough questions. Where has the mainstream media been the last six years? When have they held Bush or any of his cronies accountable? Where is the investigative reporting? Where is the outrage among the so called "free" press? There is none outside of underground and alternative sources. The entire world knows there was no justification for the war on Iraq, and our continued presence there further destabilizes that nation and imposes greater suffering to its people. Our troops are being terribly misused and turned into goon squads fighting against civilians and patriots for the purposes of corporate greed. And the use of deployed uranium exposes all, soldiers and Iraqis alike, to toxins that will sooner or later kill them.
This insanity must stop, for the future of our nation and indeed the world.
