One Important Question in the Blossoming Health Care Debate
Universal health care is already shaping up to be a central theme of the 2008 presidential campaign, with Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and John Edwards all strongly in favor.
Here's my question. If
(1) Obama, Clinton, and Edwards are prepared to stand by their pledges to provide health care for all Americans, and
(2) Congressional democrats are prepared to stand by their pledges for a balanced budget, then
(3) Are the aforementioned candidates prepared to raise taxes?
Edwards is on the record with a response, and I respect it. "Edwards: Universal Health Care Trumps Balanced Budget." Barack and Hillary, what say you?
Update: More evidence that Edwards has taken the lead on this from Ezra Klein. Worth checking out; the man speaks honestly and openly about the tough choices America will have to make when setting its priorities for the next presidential term.

Universal Healthcare saves money, it does not cost money. Will Sam Brownbeck or Duncan Hunter when elected raise taxes to cover the cost of preventable chronic illness, emergency room visits and lost time from work caused by the Republican policy of not having universal health care?

Yes universal health care, equal treatment for all would be a real bargain. Edwards is the only one out there that has a lick of sense, as close as we can get to a citizen politician. It's time to replace the pros with citizen politicians.

We at Black Agenda Report have what we think is a both a broad and specific critique of the junior senator from Illinois.
In our lead article, just published this morning at www.blackagendareport.com, we examine the devolution of Obama's health care stands from his days in the Illinois legislature when he co-sponsored the Bernardin Amendment and wanted to be seen as an advocate of single payer, to his present dissembling position, in which he seems unable to muster the courage even to denounce the clearly bad plans advanced by establishment pols as "health care", like the "individual mandate" laws in Massachusetts and California which require the poor and near-poor to BUY their own health insurance or lose their personal income tax exemptions.

I'm an unabashed Roddenberry socialist so running up deficits is no big deal. I'm also a registered Libertarian - but regard the current health care industry as socialized medicine. I want less government AND less monetary interest. Run up the deficits for what the people need. It's only debt and we should control our own resources instead of having big government do the bidding of the wealthy.
