When Brigham Young Doesn't Want You, You're Washed Up
There is currently a petition drive at Brigham Young University to withdraw Dick Cheney's invitation to speak at the school's commencement exercises later this month. 2,300 signatures were collected the first week. Here is an excerpt from the petition:
...Cheney has made misleading statements about the tragic war which continues in Iraq, levied outrageous partisan accusations against his Democratic opponents, and used vulgarity on the Senate floor. He has been linked to serious scandals involving botched intelligence reports, no-bid contracts awarded to friends and political donors, and perjury convictions handed down to his own staff. Mr. Cheney is simply not the type of role model to whom we wish to bestow the responsibility of addressing our best and brightest as they "go forth to serve".
It doesn't get much more conservative than Brigham Young, and it appears that a lot of BYU students have taken their Christian studies to heart and applied them to the behaviors of the current administration.
Thanks to Tennessee Guerilla Women.

It is much worse than that. Contrary to the Hatch Act, which forbids use of government money, material, soldiers and military installations for partisan political purposes, Dick Cheney has led an illegal partisan "cleansing" of the Department of Defense to ensure that only "Bushies" and other "Republican-leaning" gain advancement. Colonels are retiring and being placed into GS 14 nad 15 positions. The Civil Service is being gutted to facilitate a lucretive "Spoils System" both within Government Service and as part of the "Contracted Out" extra-governmental service. Dick Cheney, for example, came to Fort Leavenworth and led a "rally" for the Administration that was plainly political, clearly anti-democratic and illegal as hell! Soldiers, the Army and the institutions of the Republic are not "owned" by the Administration nor should they be used in this fashion.
I hope the students succeed in keeping Cheney from speaking. I know he's one of the last people I'd want giving direction to my child!
It's nice to think that maybe some conservatives are finally seeing the light.

Agreed, some conservatives are begining to see the light as are the Mormons and to thjeir great credit. I think the Methodists are also part of that movement, because their ads speak of warmth and inclusion toward others and that is a great christian message. Bush and most of the Bush family are Methodists whose philosophy of life and christianity seems to me at least to be in opposition to the wonderful message of the Methodist Church.
Also Joel Osteen does not preach a Bush/Cheney/Rovian message of hate. Pastor Osteens message is a warm, wonderful message of inclusion for all people and a message of hope. I find his preaching to be very uplifting. Contrast these religions with that of my religion, the catholic church, which is totally a Republican Bush/Cheney/Rove message and one which I, even though a catholic, totally reject.
Maybe the catholic church needs another reformation because it has given itself over to the Republican agenda of war- death- kill for profit and world domination. That kind of mindset is one of disaster and death for the US and the entire world and the 'family of man' as well as the end to our american democracy. Scalia, a staunch catholic almost a vicious catholic, said in a speech he gave in May 2000 that the rule of law, american law must end as should our american democracy. Scalia like O'Reilly and Hannity, Santorum, Brownback, Sununu, Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, John Roberts, Tim Russert(of Plamegate)and Robert Novak (also Plamegate)Laura Ingraham, Peggy Noonan(Reagangate/and daddy Bush caused Iran-Contra, and the death of four nuns and the rape and torture of Sr. Diannna Ortiz) and Phyllis Schlafly and as do so many other catholics speak out for the catholic church issues. Though I am a catholic all I can say is so much for those obnviously corrupt catholic issues of Pope John Paul and Benedict XVI. Hopefully one day the catholic church will correct and 'right' itself so those of us who are not Republican catholics, and even some who are will be around to resurrect the catholic church from it's own iniquitiy. Catholics cannot serve two masters, GWB and Jesus.
