Sheriff Obama To Clean Up Town -- On the First Day

The Obama campaign has released Barack Obama's plan to reform Washington -- a plan they say he will enact on his first day in office. Some of it goes a good bit further than the measures Democrats in Congress have enacted, some of it is short on details. Regardless, he definitely has his heart in the right place. Highlights from a fact sheet sent out by the campaign:

- Closing the revolving door: No political appointee in an Obama Administration would be able to lobby the executive branch during the remainder of the Administration. Huge change from the current way of doing things.

- Ending the abuse of no-bid contracts: Admirable, but no details given.

- Stopping the influence of lobbyists: President Obama would issue an executive order banning lobbyists from giving gifts in any form to executive branch employees.

- Ending politicization of the federal government: Tougher enforcement measures in the Hatch Act.

- Cute/nutty stuff: Obama would not sign any bill without giving the public an opportunity to comment on the White House website for five days. Cabinet officials would be required to host national broadband town halls. And there's this sort of Big-Brother-for-federal-employees thing: "Obama will require his appointees... to conduct the significant business of the agency in public, so that any citizen can see in person or watch on the Internet as the agencies debate and deliberate the issues that affect American society. Videos of meetings will be archived on the web, and the transcript will be available to the public." American citizens can watch in person as bureaucrats do their jobs?? How incredibly boring and ripe for trouble.

- Disclosure on earmarks and tax breaks: President Obama would ensure that tax
breaks to special interests and all congressional earmarks are posted on the Office of Management and Budget's website.

- No more political operatives with sweet jobs: "Obama will issue an Executive Order requiring that political appointees possess relevant professional qualifications and experience related to the core mission of the agency for which they are nominated."

You can read more about Obama's plans for corruption, oversight, etc. at this campaign web page.

A sweet list overall.

How about "Issue an Executive Order prohibiting federal officials from considering presidential signing statements in the interpretation of new laws"?

The Senator really looks like Mr. Clean compared to the dirty Senator from New York. The Senator really makes the Senator from New York look like a Tammney Hall type, which she is, along with her hubby Bubba which handed out pardons in his last days like a corrupt Arkansas Sheriff.

If you think Bubba handed out some questionable pardons, just wait to see what Dubya does. The Machiavellian "end justifies the means" attitude of this administration promises to leave a terrible legacy of "forgiven" criminals who were, after all, just trying to do "God's will" in spite of such little things as legal, moral, ethical and Constitutional constraints.

Actually, Obama was pretty specific about no-bid contracts. He said that he would ban no-bid contracts over $25,000, while Hillary said that she would only end the "abuse" of such contracts. That is specific if you ask me.

RE: No bid contracts, Obama seems totally clear to me. All he has to do is make that woman whistle-blower who spoke out about n0-bid contracts and was punished and make her the head of the department that she sorks in or any and all government departs that hand out gov't contracts. She will do the right thing. No doubt in my mind...
Obama's list is a great start.
If he can also separate church and state as Jesus and our now shredded US Constitution demand that will be a giant step in the right direction.
Get the pope and the catholic church, my church, and the evangelical fundies out of gov't and just maybe there is hope that America and the world may survive.

What details are needed to end no bid contracts beyong saying I will ban them for any contract over $25000.00? Maybe the poster can tell what he means by details.

bob t you forgot to mention the Zionist Jews that are all over the government(e.g. Bush's chief of staff, and Cheny's Scooter Libowitz and don't forget Jack Abramoff). The neocon Zionists are the puppet masters. Obama is relatively clean of them, unlike the Senator from NY. Read the Talmud about them ruling over you goyims.

I don't know that I agree that the "broadband town meeting" idea is so nutty. The executive branch has been making choices for the American people that they know little about and are not at all involved in. A little transparency never hurt anything. And even if every citizen isn't watching these things, maybe the newsmedia could actually do it's job and watch this stuff and inform us of what's going on. I completely disagree that it's "big brother for federal employees." Aren't they supposed to be working for the interests of the public? It would be a nice change from the secrecy, corruption and expansion of executive branch power that's occurring now, that is becoming borderline facism. That's what's nutty, but it's not at all cute.

a needed summary of all preposed legislation--should include an assessment of --who will be the benefactors of the change and who will be the losers---and how the proposal will help to close the financial -gap between the--'haves--- and the have nots

also--when congress removes a tax -break it shall never be considered an increase in taxes--that is just cleaning up an inequity that should have never happened at time one---

Sarah W., please tell me that you're joking. "The neocon Zionists are the puppet masters"? Umm... naw. You're pulling my leg. Bush and the Christian right "Rapture Now" crowd may coopt equally crazy neocon Jews as mascots, as part of fulfilling the conditions for the second coming, but I think Bush & Cheney do whatever the heck they want.

I seriously doubt that Jack Abramoff's and Ralph Reed's lobbying hustle is the power behind the presidency.

Daniel, Bush is a Christian Zionist. Too Many of the Evangelicals, like the late Jerry Falwell, are as Zionist as many Jews. Falwell got a jet plane as compensation from Menachem Begin. Unfortunately, AIPAC and some in Israel are taking advantage of these simple minded Evangelicals to the detriment of most Americans. Western Europe does not have this problem

As much as we really need a democrat to win in 08', it really would not surprise me if they f*ck things up again this year. Example, 2004 should have been really easy for dems to win. I have little confidence in the Dems for 08' It will be the end for democrats if they lose a 3rd election- total shame. They really need to stop being such pussies...

Butt, "They really need to stop being such pussies...", I take it that you are not a Senator Clinton supporter. Obama is the man.

GT- You know- I really don't have much against Obama or Hillary. My spin on Obama is that he is a little over-hyped. I do think Democrats do have a tendency to wimp out on things. While the hardcore lefties somehow have this expectation that the Dems taking over the house meant some automatic withdrawal from Iraq, I just think the Dems lost any backbone by not adding any benchmarks / timetables for funding. I know they don't want to be attacked from the right for not supporting troops but it seems like the Dems haven't done too much since taking control of the house. Between Clinton and Obama, Clinton comes off way more experienced and confident than Obama and I think she would do well. I'm just expressing my doubts about a democratic win in 08'. I think it will be much harder than many anticipate. I do think wildcards like Bloomberg or Gore would be nice additions to the already crowded field.
