If you think white people have "skin privilege" because they're much the majority, go look at South Africa, pre-apartheid. Reverse numbers (and more), but white people were still in charge. What powerful people have is single-mindedness, organization, and an understanding of how money works. The black people who have that, like Oprah, are more rich and powerful than Americans of any color who don't.

I really appreciate your critique, but I think your perspective on hip hop and even Tupac is far too limited and detracts from the rest of your insights. Tupac was not "rapping' 'bout nothin' but bitches and hoes" and we have to bridge the generation gap that makes it so easy to dismiss hip hop as being about that. Many young politically active and progressive minded blacks, latinos, and others made the transition out of pop rap (which, I'll give you, is pretty much about bitches and hoes) into politically conscious music and action, with the help of artists like Tupac, who despite being a baggy pants wearing, confused young 20 something, shared insightful political commentary and probably died before his political awareness could evolve into adulthood. Anyway thanks for your posting. Very interesting.
