Rudy's 'Senior Freedom Adviser': Curtail Arab Birth Rate

Berkowitz.jpg

Lately Philip Weiss, proprietor of the blog Mondoweiss, has been reading up on the work of Peter Berkowitz, a George Mason law professor who moonlights as Rudy Giuliani's "Senior Statecraft, Human Rights and Freedom Advisor" (pretty good gig, if you can get it). Today Weiss dug up a 2004 Weekly Standard article in which Berkowitz offers an analysis of Israeli demographic policies hinging on one overwhelming concern: How do we get Arabs in Israel to stop breeding so damn much? Berkowitz begins by acknowledging that the very term "demographic problem...conjures up illiberal images of a government classifying people by ethnicity, race, or religion." OK, duly noted. And then, natch, Berkowitz goes on to make some chillingly illiberal policy prescriptions. Weiss sums up:

[Berkowitz] said that Arab birth rates are a "threat" to Israel's "political sovereignty and territorial integrity" and came out for a policy aimed at curbing subsidies to large families, thereby limiting Arab birth rates in the Jewish state. It's hard not to describe this attitude as racist. Does Rudy Giuliani endorse such family-planning policies?

Yup, that would be yet another question for an enterprising campaign reporter to ask Giuliani on the trail. I nominate someone from the New York Times, which, as far as I can tell, has completely ignored the Giuliani advisers story. For now, see this American Prospect rundown and this Talking Points Memo video on the subject.

Disclaimer: I happen to be a close relative of Justin Elliott, er, his father. Anyway, speaking of Israel's "territorial integrity", when IS Israel going to declare its borders? What ARE its borders?

Giuliani is hopelessly bigoted
against Arabs and Muslimi.
People of that ilk are not qualified to lead Americans.

Israel's Swift Proposal in the Arab territory testifies to their cruelty. Israel needs to remember they came from UR in the Middle East and they are invading Arab territories. The Old Testiment is one historical accounting of the history of their invasions of other nations in the past.

He's talking about cutting subsidies. That means stopping encouraging them from having large families, not enacting any punitive measures for those who do. Doesn't sound very authoritarian to me. Typical anti-Semetic overreaction to Israel doing what is necessary to protect itself.

how are large arab families connected to 'israel...doing what is necessary to protect itself', eric? how do large arab families threaten israel's national security? you display a shocking ignorance of how such 'population policies' are routinely used by states against their ethnic/racial minorities. maybe you should look up some US history on the population program in puerto rico, and also its policies targeting the african american community in the 1950s and 1960s.

For Eric and similar:

Anti-Semite (ante Semit, n. colloq.) - A person who challenges the belief, widely held by Jews, that the Hebrews are the Chosen Race, hand-picked by God himself (herself) for special privileges including, but not limited to, the takover and ethnic-cleansing of the so-called Promised Land using terrorism, propaganda, oppression, asassination, media control and nepotism, a feat which has never been fully accomplished, despite 4000 years of intense effort by a political movement known in modern times as Zionism.

THANK YOU, Skoglund, Dierdre and David Ellis!!!

I am so SICK AND TIRED of hearing about "poor Isreal" in the face of the treatment of the Palestinians whose country they are in. I know this is an incredibly politically incorrect statement, but if we want to read about conquest, domination and genocide we need to look no farther than the Old Testament and the way the people of Canaan were treated when the Chosen People of God rolled into town. I don't care to see the inequities of the past repeated by anyone anywhere.

Curbing birth rates is something that would bring joy to the heart of Misanthropic, environmentalism aside, don't blame Rudy, he is a typical politician(e.g. prostitute) and needs money for his election. "[Berkowitz] said that Arab birth rates are a "threat" to Israel's "political sovereignty and territorial integrity" Rudy is just raising campaign dollars from the community, like any New York politician(remember what Wesley Clark said) would do in a similar situation. Look at Senator Clinton and the things she says to the community to get support. This is just typical New York politics. In the southern US(e.g. North Carolina) there are other pandering issues. A Politician "gots to do what he gots to do".

You've got your pro-lifers, you've got your pro-abortion people, you've got the people
that just plain don't care
and leave a trail of expectant
mothers in their path, there's
all kinds of different philosophies on birth control
and family, but one thing is for sure, the human race as a
whole is NOT slowing down, by the statisticians' reckoning,
there'll be some 9 billion
people walking the earth by
2050, and probably a lot more
hungry people. I don't care
what your nationality is,
what your ethnicity, what
your economic demographic slice is, more people=less
resources per capita. That
oil, that food, that water,
that fresh air...nevermind
jobs and health care, just
keep it at the basic stuff
for a minute...21st century
is going to be interesting...

"[Berkowitz] said that Arab birth rates are a "threat" to Israel's "political sovereignty and territorial integrity" Sounds like Berkowitz went crazy watching too many late night TV moview about Hitler. That will do it to people. Turn off the TV.

i cant even believe this. i think that everyone has the right to have as many kids as they would like. i dont believe there ahouls be any laws which give limit on birth rates. as long as you feel you can take care of your children, feed them and keep then heathly i dont see any reason why anyone would put a limit on how many kids a family can have.

Courtney, you are right, but you also need to understand that the Ishmael seed causes untold grief to the Jews and hast to be limited. It was a mistake for Abraham to knock up the maid and produce Ishmael. The sins of the father are visited upon the sons.

Courtney says, "As long as you feel you can take care of your children, feed them and keep then healthy i don't see any reason why anyone would put a limit on how many kids a family can have."

But perhaps the Arabs only 'feel' they can take care of their children due to the subsidies they receive from the state.

Personally I think it is irresponsible in this age of widespread environmental degradation and overpopulation for ANYONE to have a large family.

I have less of a problem with large families however if the parents are actually able to SUPPORT the family without relying on welfare payments - particularly if the payments come from a state that they may or may not feel any loyalty toward.

Breaking it down, the real question is should Israeli Jews pay Israeli Arabs to have large families?

(By the way, for those who are curious, the subsidies surely would have been cut off long ago in Israel were it not for the fact that they also support Orthodox Jewish large families. You may find it shocking, but apparently Israel does not discriminate between Arabs and Jews in its payment of these childcare benefits.)

Jacobson and Aaron, both of you are typical of the new fascist Jew that the world despises. The World Council of Churches condemns Israel for being fascist. The fascist Jews have the "Stockholm Syndrome", they need help.
