Branding "Progressive" in the Midwest — Your Thoughts?
The folks at the Center for American Progress are looking for opinions on their new ad campaign currently running in the Columbus, Milwaukee, and Indianapolis media markets. Here are there ads:
These first two are great, particularly the first one. The left lost the branding wars over the word "liberal," and this sort of head-on messaging is necessary to win the branding wars over "progressive." I particularly like the line "Progressive. And proud of it." Less success here, though...
By pairing the progressive message with those super smug Mac ads, these spots just reinforce the idea that progressives are coastal elites who think they dress hipper, talk smarter, and know politics better than their middle American cousins. There's also a dangerous degree of oversimplification going on.
Comments
The first two are pretty good. The second two are lacking as you wrote.
I agree as well, although I did think the second two were cute, the first two had a better message of being inclusive and united as Americans and not just a philosophical extreme.

What's the problem here? Finally the Left tries a little constructive branding to offset the years that orgs like the Heritage Foundation, the GOP and others have spent convincing naive Americans that liberal is wrong - and you shoot them for it?
Jonathan, please...

it might be worth considering the words of a very wise and well spoken man here...:
["I have ever deemed it more honorable and more profitable, too, to set a good example than to follow a bad one."]

sometimes when groups get into this loop of ignoring reasonable and rational debate, in favor of sloganizing and mudslinging, each accusing 'the other side' of being the first offender, i'm just reminded of a couple of 4 year olds both going "HE/SHE started it!"

Then, Jet, perhaps you'll agree that the second add [top, right hand] is successful in that it is only about the positives of progressiveness and doesn't criticize the other side.

After reading "Lies My Teacher Told Me" I think they should rotate through all 4 althought the first 2 might produce less "knee-jerk" reactions to the folks who are already conditioned to hate anything "liberal/progressive" and correctly show that those issues are a national heritage.
Since most in the U.S. are learning most of what they know from TV, we need these kinds of adds. But be prepared for the "backlash" that will accuse progressives of big govt. and hating the military.

without getting specific about any of the ads, i most certainly agree that pointing out what you consider the positives of your own positions is much to be preferred over a campaign of negatives about 'the other guy'.

A fair and gentlemanly response - thank you, Jet.
