Karl Rove, Don't Spin My Work for Your Historical Revisionism

Karl Rove needs to work on his reading comprehension skills. I can say so because he's been disingenuously citing me.

During the past week, the Bush-guru-turned-Newsweek-columnist has been on the defensive regarding the claim he made during a Charlie Rose interview that the Bush White House "was opposed to voting on" the Iraq war resolution right before the 2002 congressional elections. He insisted, "We didn't think it belonged within the confines of the election." Asserting that "we thought it made [the vote] too political," Rove said that it was the congressional Democrats who pressed for the vote in the middle of the political season.

As Michael Isikoff and I reported in our book, Hubris: The Inside Story of Spin, Scandal, and the Selling of the Iraq War, President George W. Bush met at the White House with congressional leaders on September 4 and told them he wanted a quick vote on a resolution that would grant him the authority to use military action against Saddam Hussein. Bush insisted he wanted this vote within six weeks. Senator Tom Daschle, then the majority leader of the Senate, wondered why the rush? He suspected that Rove was orchestrating a fast vote to put the Democrats on the spot right before the mid-term election. In fact, a day earlier, Daschle had been in a smaller meeting with Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney. During that get-together, he had asked Bush, wouldn't it be better to postpone the vote until after the election and take politics out of the debate? Bush turned toward Cheney, who shot the president a look that Daschle later described as a "half smile." Then Bush told Daschle, "We just have to do it now."

Rove now says none of that happened and he will explain all (of course) in a book yet to be written. But not only Daschle has challenged Rove's account. Former White House chief of staff Andy Card did the same, quipping, "Sometimes [Rove's] mouth gets ahead of his brain." And former White House press secretary Ari Fleishcer also chimed in, saying, "It was definitely the Bush administration that set it in motion and determined the timing, not the Congress. I think Karl in this instance just has his facts wrong."

Despite all this, Rove has stuck with his story and has gone so far as to cite me. I've been reliably informed that Rove has been pointing to an article I posted on September 25, 2002, to defend his remarks. In that piece, "Democrats Whine About War Debate", I did write that House Minority Leader Dick Gephardt and Daschle were "pushing for a fast vote on Bush's war resolution in order to have a chance to address other subjects prior to the November 5 congressional elections." But the article made clear that Bush (and Rove) had pushed them into the corner with a demand for a fast, pre-election vote.

The article cited examples of how the Bush gang, in the run-up to the election, was politicizing the war vote:

Days ago, Vice President Dick Cheney attended a fundraiser in Kansas for Republican congressional hopeful Adam Taff, who is running against Democratic incumbent Dennis Moore, and he proclaimed that electing Taff would aid the administration's war effort. Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, a Democrat, quickly protested. "I was chagrined," he said, that Cheney would tell people to vote for a Republican because he was a war supporter. "If that doesn't politicize the war," Daschle added, "I don't know what does." And when GOP chairman Mark Racicot observed that a vote against the war "could be fair game in the closing days of the campaign," Democratic National Committee spokesperson Jennifer Palmieri griped, "He's making a veiled threat, outlining how Republicans would use the Iraq vote against Democrats."

Another excerpt:

Bush might have (or probably, or definitely) pushed his war against Iraq during election time for crass political reasons--to squash debate and discussion of economic and health-related issues that tend to benefit Democrats.

The piece noted:

The Democrats' problem is that, for the most part, they are unable or unwilling to politicize Bush's rush to war, for that would entail fiercely challenging Bush's demand for the authority to use force against Iraq--which is not the Democratic position.

A clear--and honest--reading of the article is that the Democrats, facing a strong and political push from the White House, were caving and looking to do so ASAP. For Rove to cite this article to defend his self-serving revisionism is an indication he's not too careful when it comes to facts. His editors at Newsweek should take note.

David,

You shouldn't be surprised by the Turdblossom's boldfaced lying. Were not his promotions and distortions a large part of the "Lies" book you published a few years back?

The only difference now is that he must open his mouth to lie himself, since his hand is (ostensibly) no longer doing the rectal reaching up the Bush-puppet to fashion the lies FOR him!

He's doing exactly what he wants to do. Tell BIG lies and get everyone riled up.
He's to be made fun of, a big-mouthed buffoon. Addressing it seriously is what he wants.

David Corn,

Please why not call it as it is: Karl Rove is a liar and taught the Bush administration all about how and when to lie?

If the fact that Karl Rove expresses his own realities is not obvious to you, then you might need a guardian to protect you and your fortune. It is -- and for some years now, has been -- one of the most obvious features of the current Administration in Washington...

Any book that man is planning to write should be regarded as fiction -- regardless of the topic, what might be cited or who might be quoted...

One wonders, though, whether his compulsion to fib comes out of some congenital predisposition or he just simply finds it enjoyable to zoom the American People...

Either way, he has done far more damage the OBL ever could have dreamed. And moreover he is rewarded for his antics...

Only in America...

As much as it hurts to admit this, I have to give the Rover his due.
Karl put the fear of political death to anyone that would oppose the rush to war and it worked.
However, he needed the Washington Press to "sell the story" and they did. Then the so called television media retold the story over and over.
That's the real "sin" of this war , it proved that a handful of powerful people controlled the entire media with very few exceptions.

David Korn is being too generous to Rove in blaming his falsehoods on a bad memory.

Rove lied about the Valerie Plame leak, and he's lying now. Rather than writing for Newsweek, he should be in jail.

Quite obviously, Samuel Clemns was correct and the only solution is to "hang them all and start over." What I find disturbing is that many so called "progressives" continue to pretend that electing Hillary will somehow, change anything.

Uh, Richard, did you and Karl go to school together?

How is Samuel Clemns (sic - are we talking about Mark Twain here?) correct? When and where did he say or write "hang them all and start over"?

And what does, uh, libruls votin' fer Hillary have to do with Karl Rove and his delusions?

What am I missing here, Richard?

Phil Shelin: The control of the media, both print and electronic, has been shameful in their coverage of the GW Bush Administration. You are correct in that they repeat bald face lies over and over without any checking of facts. The only program I have found is Countdown that at least tries to get to the truth in an way that is entertaing and factual.

This is all so obvious, I wonder why the press does not bring him (Rove) to task, after all he's out of the Whitehouse interior security wing and into the fray. Isnt he fair game at this point? Maybe the press are opting to leave well enough alone and not have to explain/defend thier role in all this

Newsweek needs to fire Mr. Rove immediately. But then, they never should have hired him in the first place. What were they thinking?

Posted by: Mrs. Garside on 12/04/07 at 1:23 PM  Respond

Rove wants to rehabilitate his image as a rat-f*cking dirty-trickster politican and become a respectable voice in the ongoing political dialogue.

Why he was not indicted for disclosing the identity of a CIA agent is a secret Fitzgerald will never part with. But Rove did disclose this to both Cooper and Novak further claiming "Valerie Plame is fair game" to Chris Matthews. Now if THAT doesn't sound like a man who was pleased to have found a way to rat-f*ck a the wife of a political enemy!

Robert Buckenmeyer is right. No need to debate Karl Rove on his version of the facts. No need to lend him any credibility as a voice of reason. Cancel you Newsweek subscription and tell them why. Relegate this festering scumbag to the scrap heap of history. Maybe Delay will give him a job as an exterminator.

Karl can you spell ethics? How about morality? Not unlike the type humans which abound in citadels of perfidy and depravity such as the Heritage Foundation, Karl Rove and his ilk are soulless entities and consequently are not inhibited by truth of any kind. A lie to these creatures is a convenience, a life a number, a nation or two a disposition on a military, political or theological report. It is un-American to support these type creatures because there are akin to the same creatures that our fore fathers escaped from in puritanical and despotic England. These are the offspring of those same persecuting, religious fanatics and just like them there are anti-religious, anti-democractic, anti-life and anti-human. These are the monsters who have changed the ideological and historical course of the once greatest country in the world for the benefit of themselves and their corporate and military masters. Their reward is money and power and the "just desert" for the rest of us is the rebirth of despotic injustice. When we vote in the likes of Bush, Cheney and a carpet bagging GOP then we do indeed reap what we so and collect our "just desert"!

KARL ROVE IS ROVING-MAD.... BUT HE HAS A POINT!

Rove has been claiming that Congress forced Bush into a War Resolution in 2002, not the other way around. HE IS ABSOLUTELY RIGHT. Now, Ari Fleisher claims that Rove is nuts. Rove responds that he, Rove, was in the White House privy to inner works, not Fleicher. Very true, but then what are we to make of Bush's Chief of Staff, Andy Card's statement to FOX-NEWS that Rove's mouth runs ahead of his brain?

The answer is that Rove has lied so long that he goes by the Golden Right-wing Republican Rule: WE NEVER BELIEVED WE COULD ACHIEVE POWER. BUT WE DID AND WE WERE ONLY NOT-YET-READY-FOR-PRIME- TIME FOOLS. SO, BEING MEDIOCRITIES, WE CAN ONLY HOLD POWER BY THINKING [LYING] OUTSIDE THE [LEGAL] BOX AND THEN COVERING UP SO NO ONE CATCHES ON TO WHAT LARCENOUS FOOLS WE ARE!!!!

It is true, as you claim, that Bush was not a "decided" in 2002-- OR EVER-- about going into Iraq. He didn't want a war in the middle of a wobbly war in Afghanistan. So he refused all of the Rumsfeld-Cheney insistence. But Rumsfeld and his troll Cheney insisted. Rummy had wanted before 2000 that Bush give him Chief of CIA; he didn't want Defense again and so refused to join the Administration. The neocons then came to him and advised him to reconsider, accept the Pentagon, start a war in Iraq and win it quick and clean to become a national hero, overshadowing Bush. The neocons assured Rummy that Bush is "a one term putz, just like his father" and would be a one-term-er, so they would support him to victory in 2004, just as they had supported Bush in 2000. Rummy is like a shark, in the words of Nixon: big teeth and small brain. So he accepted DoD!

When Bush refused him war in Iraq, Rummy had an ace up his sleeve: remember all the Bush military records that are still supposedly missing? Guess who had them? So Rummy-- ON HIS OWN-- ordered a war plan and set up the staging in Kuwait. Bush, blackmailed, could only try to delay and stall by dragging his feet on a decision. The Congress believed that Bush was acting out of partisanship and so insisted that a decision to go to war be a JOINT decision between the President and Congress, as was the case with his dad. BUSH COULD NOT TELL THEM: JERKS, IF YOU PUSH, RUMMY GETS HIS WAY AND I GET BLAMED FOR THE SHIFT OF EFFORT FROM THE *REAL* WAR ON TERROR IN AFGHANISTAN TO THE PHONY WAR ON TERROR TO STEAL IRAQ'S OIL. So Bush went along dragging his feet in every way his dad could come up with. In fact, Poppy Bush told private-citizen JOE WILSON that his son WOULD NOT attack Iraq. That's why as late as FEBRUARY 2003, Joe Wilson was speaking to groups all over Wash DC to reassure them that there would be no war, ignorantly reinforced in his belief, by CIA DCI Tennet and by Sec State Powell. To taint Wilson's affection for the Bushes, Cheney pushed the CIA to re-investigate the Yellow Cake story. That way, it was thought, Wilson would be incriminated and silenced. When that didn't work, Cheney's boy, Libby, went to NY Times self-assumed "insider," dummy Judith Miller and sought to spread the lie about Wilson being a CIA insider through his Valerie Plame and was out to hurt the President for partisan reasons (this was about when the CIA was blamed for missing 9/11). Cheney thought he could get two birds with one stone. The idea was to discredit Wilson's NY TIMES op-ed secretly by a whisper campaign. Alas, Bob Novak, desperate for a scoop, ran with the story and made public what was supposed to discredit Wilson without his realizing it.

BUT REMEMBER, Rove, Cheney, Rumsfeld and all the Bush Administration biggies are all mediocrities who thought they they had finally come up with a great "dirty trick," making them really smart, like the Nixon Campaign staffers of 1972. And-- given enough air time-- they will put their feet deep, deep down their own throats because they are too dumb to see their own transparency. As a result, Libby was indicted and convicted (and then pardoned) on behalf of all of them.

SO GO GET 'EM CARL, YOUR TV APPEARANCES ARE THE BEST CHRISTMAS PRESENT YOU COULD EVER GIVE ME. For you, Carl, are really a pompous mentally deranged idiot who will run over himself and the Bush White House with his own pick-up truck full of lies. Only because of you I watch FOX-NEWS, You, Giuliani (the NY Mafia Capo with a Bill Clinton hypothalamic problem-- surely aided by a lot of Viagra-- and an Al Capone-like endless thirst for $$$), Cheney (the brain-dead battery-run pink bunny beating a terrorists-are-coming drum that keeps on going, going, going, lying, lying, lying, scheming, scheming, scheming) ARE FORCING AMERICANS TO REALIZE THAT IT'S NOT ONLY THE SOLDIERS FIGHTING YOUR FOR-OIL-TERROR WAR (and for $$$ to friends) THAT ARE GETTING SCREWED, BUT ALSO ALL THE BUSH "ENTREPRENEURS"-- French for "in between takers"-- MAKING BILLIONS OF DOLLARS THAT ARE BECOMING WORTHLESS BECAUSE OF THE BALLOONING NATIONAL DEBT. So, it won't be long before every American who in 2004 concluded: better a stupid President than gay weddings on TV, will have to face the consequences of a clueless war where only Halliburton and Blackwater are getting gaining on the battlefield.

Since all the proof is deep-sixed as "TOP SECRET" by Bush'a attempt to cover-up that he was NEVER THE "DECIDER"-- Rumsfeld was-- we now desperately need your pathological attention seeking, after Bush fired you as too bad a stink in the White House, to hint at how badly Hurricane Katrina had hit between the ears of the White House mediocre advisers like you for a brain-dead neurotoxic STILL "can't say no" President.

Carl, the Lord works His way to making the Truth known in mysterious ways-- through an anti-Christ psycho like you. God bless you, you are indeed making "history,"
