Christians Good! Christmas Good!
The Christian victimization complex in this country has hit new heights.
Iowa representative Steve King (R) has introduced a resolution (H.Res. 847) asserting—honest to God—that Christmas, Christians, and Christianity are important.The House will vote today.
Below is the text of the resolution. It reads like some sort of bizarre self-parody. Consider the paranoia necessary for a Christian, with members of his faith occupying the White House, most of the Supreme Court, and a huge percentage of Congress (there is currently one Muslim and one atheist in Congress), to introduce something like this.
Recognizing the importance of Christmas and the Christian faith.
Whereas Christmas, a holiday of great significance to Americans and many other cultures and nationalities, is celebrated annually by Christians throughout the United States and the world;
Whereas there are approximately 225,000,000 Christians in the United States, making Christianity the religion of over three-fourths of the American population;
Whereas there are approximately 2,000,000,000 Christians throughout the world, making Christianity the largest religion in the world and the religion of about one-third of the world population;
Whereas Christians identify themselves as those who believe in the salvation from sin offered to them through the sacrifice of their savior, Jesus Christ, the Son of God, and who, out of gratitude for the gift of salvation, commit themselves to living their lives in accordance with the teachings of the Holy Bible;
Whereas Christians and Christianity have contributed greatly to the development of western civilization;
Whereas the United States, being founded as a constitutional republic in the traditions of western civilization, finds much in its history that points observers back to its roots in Christianity;
Whereas on December 25 of each calendar year, American Christians observe Christmas, the holiday celebrating the birth of their savior, Jesus Christ;
Whereas for Christians, Christmas is celebrated as a recognition of God's redemption, mercy, and Grace; and
Whereas many Christians and non-Christians throughout the United States and the rest of the world, celebrate Christmas as a time to serve others: Now, therefore be it
Resolved, That the House of Representatives--
(1) recognizes the Christian faith as one of the great religions of the world;
(2) expresses continued support for Christians in the United States and worldwide;
(3) acknowledges the international religious and historical importance of Christmas and the Christian faith;
(4) acknowledges and supports the role played by Christians and Christianity in the founding of the United States and in the formation of the western civilization;
(5) rejects bigotry and persecution directed against Christians, both in the United States and worldwide; and
(6) expresses its deepest respect to American Christians and Christians throughout the world."
Listen. Five people are recognized by federal holidays—Martin Luther King Jr., Christopher Columbus, Abraham Lincoln and George Washington (combined!), and Jesus. That's it. I think we, as a country, get Christianity's importance. I really do.
Update: We have Christmas gift suggestions.

Congress passes meaningless resolution, and dog bites man. Film at 11.
If the resolution doesn't pass will the evil secular anti-Jesus liberals steal Christmas or change it to worship Satan?
Just thinking about the baby Jesus’ birthday party being taken away makes me sad.
Why has the government waited so long to pass these important pieces of legislation? Those wily secular progressives could have stolen all of our religious holidays and important religious characters (see: Easter Bunny) since day one.
Be vigilant - watch for the sneak attack. Even if this resolution passes you can be certain the war will continue. We might have to use a little deadly force. The evil secularists have plans for a Noel-bomb. They must be stopped.

I see nothing wrong protesting a violation of the Constitution, even in a pandering resolution. Though most is just s sop to the Christian fundamentalists, this part violates the first amendment: "(2) expresses continued support for Christians in the United States and worldwide;"
The government isn't supposed to support any one religion. Violations of the establishment clause don't get much clearer.

Moral certainty is always a sign of cultural inferiority. The more uncivilized the man, the surer he is that he knows precisely what is right and what is wrong. All human progress, even in morals, has been the work of men who have doubted the current moral values, not of men who have whooped them up and tried to enforce them. The truly civilized man is always skeptical and tolerant, in this field as in all others. His culture is based on "I am not too sure."

I trust in the next few weeks we can see similar resolutions supporting Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, Shintoists, Zoroastrians, Atheists, intellectually reasoned agnostics, de facto agnostics, Star Wars devotees, etc.? Right?

It seems the more liberal thing to do here would be to try and understand the root causes why someone would feel this is a necessary act (and why such an act generally garners considerable support).
Instead of ridiculing the "Christian victimization complex," perhaps you could consider why Christians feel in many ways beleaguered.
If it helps, may I suggest you work by analogy: take any other categorization of people, imagine repeated affronts to what they hold dear, and then think about how you would compassionately side with them. Then substitute "Christians" back into equation.
Is the bill in question what our government should be working on? Of course not. But your framing of the issue (with its facetious but dismissive and hence antagonistic tone) only contributes, I think, to the root causes of the larger cultural problem.

I've got too much work to do, and too many other constitutional violations to worry about than waste my time on this nonsense. Have fun with it.

R James - thank you for bringing some sensibility to this forum. People get bent out of shape for nothing and that just upsets people. Real Christians are true liberals, as was Jesus. Don't be a dismissive jerk. This is a silly piece of legislation, but don't worry about it. It'll go away.

I for one need to write my Rep to suggest similar legislation but this time in recognizing the power and rightful place of Cthulhu and the other Elder Gods in regards to this plane of existence.
Seriously, Capt and Eric hit the nail on the head.

"Whereas Christians and Christianity have contributed greatly to the development of western civilization"
Who can forget the great contributions of the Inquisition?
The funniest part of all this is "Whereas Christians [...], commit themselves to living their lives in accordance with the teachings of the Holy Bible"
Yeah, well I'll grant that a *few* do. But in my experience anyway, it's *damn* few.
Oh, and shouldn't item 6 really be #7. Shouldn't 6 be "rejects bigotry and persecution by Christians, both in the United States and worldwide;"
Oh wait. No, I guess that would invalidate the entire bill.

"Who can forget the great contributions of the Inquisition?"
A wonderfully and purposefully myopic view of Christianity's contribution to history!
