A Problem for Barack Obama

No matter what happens in the Democratic caucus in Nevada (this Saturday) and the Democratic primary in South Carolina (next Saturday), Barack Obama has a problem. Mind you, I'm not predicting his demise. But as he and Hillary Clinton head toward Supersaturated Tuesday on February 5, Obama will have a profound challenge that she will not.

Both have money and organization. But she is running a conventional campaign; he is not. She waves her resume, cites her experience, and proclaims she is ready to do the heavy lifting on Day One. He claims that he can change politics--and, thus, government policymaking--because of his vision and strength (and force) of character. He is mounting a campaign that aspires to be transformative. She is heading a campaign that seeks to put its candidate into a job.

After South Carolina, the presidential campaign will be dominated and shaped by ads. With so many states--including California--in immediate play, there's no way the candidates can do retail politicking that matters (like they did in Iowa and New Hampshire). It will be easy for Clinton to sell herself (in conventional terms) through television ads, radio spots, mailers, and the like. Obama may find in tougher to convey the intangibles he is banking on--hope, faith (in him), transcendence--via 60-second snippets. Before signing up with a noble crusade, some Democratic voters might need first to feel the Obama magic. On the other hand, no voter needs to experience Clinton's soul to conclude she is the most qualified for the job.

Connecting with voters in a transformative manner will be a difficult task for Obama in the crazy nine days between South Carolina and February 5. As a more conventional candidate, Clinton could have an advantage at this stage. After all, the conventional often works.

I explain this all a bit further here.

Barack Obama is a politician.

Politician: A bundle of gaseous ambition cleverly packaged as a public servant or a corporate sales manager. -The Cynic's Dictionary

If a politician found he had cannibals among his constituents, he would promise them missionaries for dinner. -H.L. Mencken

Todd's Two Political Principles: 1. No matter what they're telling you, they're not telling you the whole truth. 2. No matter what they're talking about, they're talking about money. -Murphy's Law

Corn's doing his pullback he did over the summer which means there's trouble in Obama city, trouble.
Barack is selling himself, Corny argues today, Hillary's selling her resume.
Bigger question is why the press has worked so hard to sell Obama?

The general public has gained an impression of Barack Obama, whether they've personally encountered him or not. That's what they'll be voting about on Super Tuesday. In truth, 85% of the voters have probably made up their minds already, whether they know it or not.

Isn't this a repeat of your earlier warning for Obama expressed in another venue? Didn't it take earlier? Personally, I think he [Obama] has the capacity to overcome Hillary's dubious resume.

You hit the nail on the head. Obama is nothing but a bunch of feel good slogans. Once you look below the slogans there's little substance--at least that's good and worthy to run the country.

It appears that Mother Jones DOES NOT LIKE OBAMA! The question is "WHY?"

Wouldn't it be ok to find out what a candidate without entrenched political connections and obligations would be like. Career politicians should be a bit of a problem, although we do continue to elect them.

Looks like you guys are backing HRC, eh? I was let down immensely by this article because the emphasis it places on business as usual. The neccessity of abandoning BAU is paramount, not only in the American political arena but in the business arena as well when addressing sustainable development and the climate crisis are concerned. Obama, I see, as the catalyst of this necessary revolution. The article discounts the dynamism of the Obama campaign and the change message that Americans like myself thirst for. As has been seen in numerous realms of the social contract, intangibles are powerful assets. I have no doubt, using Obama's intelligence as the foundation of my reasoning, that he can hit the ground running once he is elected. Its time to break free from the bondage of conformity to the expectations of the political machine. That is the hope anyway and Obama exudes hope in trumps.

HRC's resume DOES STAND for SOMETHING...I'd rather not have her representative of the first woman prez...on the other hand Obama's life experience and accomplishments do represent what I would HOPE for in representing me! and the POSSIBILITIES for our CHANGING WORLD. HRC has been so much a part of the mess as a first lady(?)! Children's health care?!!! Take a closer look!PLEASE!!!!

I am so sick of the media telling us we should be voting for the candidate who can put on the best, most entertaining circus of a campaign. Personally I am not looking for who knows how to run a campaign, any good event coordinator and PR person can do that. Look below the hoopla folks. Hillary's "resume" is as hyped as many folks in high government positions. I want to know who can lead this country and for that, Obama is the one for me.

Indeed, her brilliant resume offers the best hope for change in our political culture and in public policy.

She's more than a promise. She's the real thing.

What is Hell is the matter with MO Jo? They have joined the "progressive" Mcluhanists in now analyzing the message rather than the messenger.

Like Katrina Van Heuvel of the Nation and Maddox of Air America, the rarified air of network appearance glamour has so deluded their critical perspective that they have succumbed to the "Meet the Press" allure of Big Shotism.

Rather than being critical of NBC's ban of Kucinich, they have joined the corporate owned anchors in forcusing on which of the leading prospects for CEO of the Corporate States of America is the most "electable."

Is it Obama the man of color and Hope, or Clinton's representative gender revolution and experience, or Edwards who forgot how to fight in the last debate?

This is just sick. The people deserve more and better critical analysis of these corporate clots --- and one would have expected that
"more" to come the Left.

Perhaps that is the problem: they are no longer of the Left. They have joined the Mid-stream.

Obama says he will change politics. But, what he as a green politician is that no one, especially the president can change Washington D.C.. This is something he will not learn until and this is a huge if he gets to the White House and then he will be completely lost, because he has no idea at all at the hell storm, that he is walking straight into. They in Washington Machine will eat him alive, and he will not know what hit him, and this country will be just as lost as he will be.

Clinton's in a most serious way. What is the nature
of that disagreement when the Clinton's are giving the
impression that all is well with her relationship with
the CDF. This is SO a typically Clinton (not quite
honest) maneuver. Marian has a Christian and
Citizenship duty to correct that false impression. To
share the truth with the Democrats and the American

important job of President of the United States at
this critical point in our Nation's history.

Obama is charismatic among youth. It is the 45+'s who elect Presidents.

Obama is John McCain's lunch. McCain is experienced and connected...Obama is neither. John McCain sold out to the Bushies in order to get this far in the race. Another Bushie in the White House is something this country can ill-afford.

Like her or not, Hillary is our ONLY chance to get at least SOME of the changes we so desperately need. What Hillary can do in her first 100-days Obama can't do in his first (and maybe ONLY) term.

How dare you discuss the upcoming primaries as a two-person race while completely ignoring the best candidate of all: John Edwards!

John Edwards was the first to propose a truly universal health plan, he has
committed to getting combat troops out of Iraq more quickly and completely
than Obama/Clinton, and he is the only candidate who is directly addressing
the negative impact of corporate influence on our democratic system. Friends of the Earth Action has endorsed Edwards because he has the best plans to address global warming and protect the environment, and 34 highly respected economists have endorsed Edwards because he has the best plans to improve the economy, raise wages, and overcome poverty.

John Edwards accepts no corporate campaign funding, so he can speak with integrity as a candidate and act with
integrity as President.

Shame on you for ignoring him!

Edwards is an asterix after Nevada, and rightly so, he brought open discourse to the debates but that was all.

Obama brought himself and that was all, besides replicating Edwards policies per verbatium, he brought nothing at all, But he did bring poetic words of change which got the young and impressionable engaged away from their beer parties, and etc.

Now they cant understand why the adults have taken over the process, as mother jones duly noted the resume in conventional primarys are will what carry the day,

This is NOT his time to step into this position - he is not experienced enough to handle the house - senate and global issues - all of which will require 'handling' to make any change and make it effective. DR. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Gen. DR. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono both talk very impressive expecially to young people, but all were just image buildings; You all just take much time before the Blue Tubes and doesnt understand reall politics and hollywoods.
Ahmadinejad and SBY talk and promissed muchabout changes, and the reallity both brough more trouble than improvement.
So What is the difference between Ron Paul and Barack?
Rhetoric only and just wait Wheere Is The Beeff.

It is truely the first time in a long time we, progressives, have a choice. It would be Kucinich, but alas, it won't happen. Edwards is a good second, but the media won't give him airtime and neither will David Corn.
Must we continue to have Republican-lite with HRC? Her soul isn't to pretty from where I sit. A few things that make me suspicious of her: voting for the Iraq War, voting for the wall between Mexico and the US, and "war with Iran isn't off the table".
I like Obama, but his specific programs need to come forward. But is youth and no insider connections a bad thing? I believe that HRC has too much baggage and the Repubs to take her down!
I believe it is too early to call a winner.

Hillery has to much baggage to win.
Obama has nothing to show(his 95 present votes in The senate proves this). Voting present instead of making a dicission yes or no shows lack of decisiveness.

Edwards might be the best choice. His speeches make sense.

pp: "Everyone" is ignoring Edwards because the media is ignoring Edwards. It's that simple. Strangely, even we cognoscenti, who are "so far above" the media stampede, still follow the media lead as to whom to focus on.

So we like Edwards and he's not covered? Then we complain about the lack of coverage. But while we are complaining about his media coverage, we are not pushing his vision of America.

For instance, his promise that we'll have access to Union representation in our workplaces. Or that the Owning Class will once again pay their fair share of the cost of maintaining a competent government and social net. Or that we'll all have access to healthcare, without having to go to the charity clinic, or into bankruptcy.

Edward's is also not mealy-mouthed, when he talks about bringing our troops home from hell. He doesn't say "we'll need to be there for years," or "as the Iraqis take over policing functions..."

No, he's all for choking the flow of U.S. Billions that prop up a fractured false Iraqi democracy that profits by NOT making progress -- just as U.S. HMOs profit from NOT making and keeping people well, or even disease-free (healthy people don't need drugs).

We are where we are, in Iraq; and us staying there will just keep Iraq as we've made it. If there is any way out, the Iraqis will now have to do it, because it's time to admit that all we could possibly do (and we can't do that) is make their country look like ours -- and have you taken a good look at ours, lately?

The only reason Obama and HRC get more press, is that the media don't have the internal dialog to name what it is, that John Edwards is all about. The truth is not usually sexy, and doesn't make good copy unless it gets people excited. And then, of course, the excitement is what gets covered.

David Corn might like Hillary or think she is more experienced.I'm a women and I don't like her. Resume's don't mean much. I am sick and tired of business as usual and I don't want a faux republician in the White House. How soon we forget NAFTA, the roaring 90' when everyone thought it was so good, but there was greed folks and Clinton lead the way and now we are paying for it.

Me, I am a John Edwards person. He was the first to use the words" change, Health Care for All" and he is the only one fighting for the working class; so don't count him out just yet despite todays's results in Nevada. The media is out to kill him just like they did Howard Dean 4 years ago. It is up to us Progressives to fight like hell for the changes that are needed or we will regret we put another Clinton in the White House. Or maybe we won't take the White House because if John McCain becomes the Republican candidate Hillary doesn't stand a chance. A CNN poll showed that the only Democratic candidate that can beat all the Repubs is Edwards, and now you know why the media is killing him.

February 13th, 2008
National Op/Ed By:
Officer Thomas A. Porter D.P.O.

Obama Represnts Change?

I have to question what 'Change' Obama keeps talking about. We see the photo op of Obama with his wife and 2 children. Nice photo op. Then we hear Obama talk about Change? What is his platform of change? He has yet to ever state what he is going to do if he were to become President. As much as I would like to see a change from the Fascist Dictatorship we have had to live under with Emperor Bush and his Dick as in shoot your best friend in the face Cheney, I have not heard one word of what Obama defines his Change to be.

We have a strong person of years of experience and leadership. We have a person who after 230 years of the continued 'Good Old Boy Network' operating in Washington D.C. to break free and represent America for all American Citizens. Hillary Clinton is the person who will do this. Hillary talks about the needs we have. She has never once failed in stating her points she will start on day one as President of the United States of America.

We do not need at this time Obama learning on the job for 4 years with the baggage he has to bring to office. If you have not read how he got into State Office and then into the U.S. Senate, then you are ignorant of his very heavy past he would bring into the Oval Office. The person who has paid or some would call his personal
'Banker', is right now in jail facing many charges and and when found gulitly would serve many years in jail for these crimes. It surely has also provided Obama and his family a very nice $2 Million + dollar house with extra land at a major discount price from the same person who is now in jail.

Where will the country be then, when we have 4 years of Obama having to tip toe around this everytime he has to face the press as he has yet to answer these questions when the media has asked the questions? I am not talking about the Corporate Media as they have failed to ask any hard questions of Obama. It would appear they are only looking at what Oprah is selling Obama as her 'Book of the Month' with a $Billion$ dollars in sales to back it up.

Being one who joined the NAACP in 1975 and has fought for Civil Rights my whole life, I find no comfort in Obama being the next president. You give me a person like Dr. King running for President then we would have a real person of substance, conviction, experience and leadership. Right now we have no Dr. Kings being backed by the likes of Oprah. That surely is sad to vision. Other than Oprah likes Obama's wife and Obama and their children, where was Oprah when Emperor Bush and his Dick were 1st running for appointed Dictatorship 8 years ago? Where was Oprah 4 years ago? She surely did not have a voice that spoke up for anyone in our Black communities. Maybe Dr. Phil was not giving his approval for Oprah to do this? Since Dr. Phil is a 100% Bushy lover and supporter it makes one question the logic of Oprah now coming out of the closet in now supporting Obama. & years of Emperor Bush and his Dick and now Dr. Phil has gotten what his Republican party needed so give Oprah the ok to support a Black for President?

McCain wants to spend 100 years in Iraq and in the Mid East and we surely do not need an Off the Charts War Crazy person again in the White House as we have already had America Bankrupted from Emperor Bush and his Dick costing America 9 Trillion in Debt under their Dictatorship. The 1% Rich have profited greatly as 99% of America has and continues to suffer 24/7.

I honor Senator McCain for his service in the military and the many years he was a POW. I do not know why he would then want to continue an unjust war. After being in Viet Nam it would leave one to wonder if one has not learned an unjust war is not the answer to becoming president. One day McCain supports Emperor Bush and his Dick. Then the next day he will not. He surely has issues with maintaining even in his Republican party any gold standard. I guess he has all his gold standards invested in the stock market.

We need a person who can work with all parties and not just the Democrats and Republicans because there are many other parties in America who are never given the media respect nor coverage. Of course I am talking about those who are the Poor, Disabled, Senior Citizens, Children, G.L.B.T. Community, Veterans and the Unemployed to name just a few. I would hope Americans can see the reality we are facing and not looking at a nice photo op of Obama and his wife and children. I hear and see the present mind set of many in the country. For this reason we would be in for another 4 years of what we have been living under with Emperor Bush and his Dick by supporting Obama.

Without Hillary Clinton as our next President we will never see the light of day and the lights will surely not be left on at night anymore. Hillary has stated a time table to have our American Troops returned home. Obama has danced around the issue and not stated a time table. Under Emperor Bush and his Dick we have 16 Military Bases in Iraq and a U.S. Embassey costing over $1 Billion Dollars. Then we keep hearing we are not building bases in Iraq and we would leave when ever the present governemnt of Iraq ask us to leave. We have been asked to leave 3 times. Does anyone in our White House respond? No, we just have Emperor Bush and his Dick continue to listen. They love to listen to everyone but never act upon what Americans are saying and demanding. They have their own agenda for the 1% Rich they owe their souls to.

I remember when President Bill Clinton was in office we could buy groceries, gasoline, staple items. We could pay our house payments and rents. We could afford to heat our homes in the winter and have a/c in the summer. We did not have to pick with our prescription medications from taking 1/2 a pill or no pill at all as we have had to for the past 7+ years. Medicare, Medicaid, Heating Assistance and Food Assistance was never questioned from being cut or done away with. Republicans as a rule like to see Senior Citizens, Disabled, Children and all the Poor suffer as they really do not ever really ever see them, they just cut off their funds so they can continue to live without the basics.

There was a huge surplus when President Bill Clinton left office but it was eaten up in 2 months after Emperor Bush and his Dick were appointed to office. All given away to the 1% Rich as they starting cutting away at the needs of the Senior Citizens, Disabled, Children and Poor of American Citizens.

For those who are of this present generation, there is a big hole in Social Values and for Civil Rights. They have never had to go out in the streets and march. They have never been under the draft to serve in the military. They have for so many had to go into the military to have a job as Emperor Bush and his Dick have closed business down in America. So the only other choice for the present generation is to go and get a job in the military. It surely is a great honor to serve one's country. That is if the objective is to protect America. Not to be the victims for the 'Greed for Oil' for the 1% Rich. There never has been an oil shortage or natural gas shortage. There never were any WMD to go to war. Only the greed for the 1% Rich to have more. The stock traders on Wall Street have made the price of Oil and Natural Gas go up. Exxon gave over 2 years ago it's C.E.O. a $1 Billion dollar bonus. I am sure Exxon is really hurting as they rape in the profits off American Citizens daily. We can surely thank the Bush family and their close relations with the Saudi Arabia King and family as we can also thank Emperor Bush's Dick who made secret deals with the American Oil Companies at the get go once he was in office. I wonder if everyone has forgotten Enron and the thousands of American Citizens who lost their jobs and life savings? Amazing how fast a society forgets the damage and illegal actions by our 'Corporate America' practice for the almighty buck.

What better way to keep the present generation occupied with iPods, Blackberries, Computers and Cell Phones and tune out what is really happening to America. I am still waiting to see this present generation
in America to march on Washington D.C. to call for the Impeachment of Emperor Bush and his Dick for War Crimes and Crimes against American Citizens. I am waiting to see this present generation to march on Washington D.C. to have this Unjust War in the Mid East stopped. How many more have to die before this present generation wakes up? How many more have to become permanently paralyzed and disabled for life? Maybe this present generation has a death wish with their iPod's, Blackberries, Cell Phones and P.C. by their sides. It surely leaves one to wonder why the 'No Child Left Behind' has been such a great success for Emperor Bush and his Dick as this program has left every child left behind.

In the 1950's, 1960's and 1970's we took social action to make a better world. Now we only see it all taken away and replaced with electronic baby sitters. This being the trend of the present generation, America is truely doomed. There is still time to wake up and look around and see the suffering, the homeless, neighbors moving away due to having their homes foreclosed on. Read newspapers and count the numbers in the thousands everyday being fired from their jobs as Corporate America closes its doors in America and moves to 3rd World Countries to make our goods we are to buy from slave labor.

Wal-Mart stores I remember use to be the store of falling prices. Now they are the stores of jacking up prices and the money we spend at Wal-Marts goes to Communist China. So every time we shop at Wal-Marts we are supporting Communist China and all the other Big Box Stores. Gone are the independent owned stores when a Wal-Mart moves into a town or city. We are forced to buy at these Wal-Mart stores and other 'Big Box Stores' because either the small retail stores have gone out of business by no fault of their own. For the few business owners that are still open for business they can not afford to buy in bulk from slave labor in China. Wal-Mart and the other Big Box Stores have the corner on slave labor China and Mexico. Wal-Mart has been the number one corporation in America to use Medicaid for the majority of it's 'Associates' for the company medical insurance plan. Of course Wal-Mart business practices have been brought into question for many years. Just another reflection that George Orwell is alive and healthy in America. You surely do not see the Smile Face on any Wal-Mart stores today do you? No it has been replaced by flat screen tv's in their stores running promo's of how great Wal-Mart is. They hang from the ceilings all over their stores. So the economy is great in America? If you are a fool and have no sense then for you it surely must be.

What will it take to open the eyes of those who keep their eyes closed to what is happening to our country we call America? Can you answer that question? Can you do something to make a difference? Or are you going to cast your vote for someone who has only stated they are for 'Change' with no substance to state what their 'Change' agenda would really be?

I surely am not going to watch America go down without making a difference each day. That is why I am casting my vote for Hillary Clinton for President. Does it scare men to have a real woman in our Oval Office? Do men appear scared to have a woman who can balance the budget? Does it scare men to have a woman who can do 6 things at one time due to men being only to focus on one thing at a time? Does it scare others who are on the far right and are so controled 24/7 by the Neo Con's who preach Fascist controling propaganda in their Mega Church's with 2 or more Mega TV Screens to hear & see the doctrine of men? The propaganda they preach, so they can deny equal rights for women and the poor and middle class? They surely have cast the 1st stone and continue for their own self wealth and control. I guess I have never been able to accept anyone who supports having Religious Cults mix with Government. I still support the separation of church and state in America.

For those who have never read the history books or lived through oppression, we have already had one Hitler who wiped out 11 Million plus citizens of the World. We have seen the same thing happen with Emperor Bush and his Dick but they have done it in an amazing way. They have done it by Economic Deprivation. It has left no finger prints at the crime scene. We surely do not need to have a newbee on the job training the next 4 years as we would then see America sink deeper.

Wake Up America and Vote Hillary Clinton for President. Will Hillary make some mistakes? I am sure she will as any other president has for the past 230 years have. Will she know the mistakes not to repeat again? Yes she will because she has 35 years of leadership and experience. That is what being president is all about. We have already had one person who has run America as the C.E.O. and we have seen what has happened in the past 7+ years by this process. Being the 'President of America' is not running it as a C.E.O. of a Company but it is a 'Public Trust' to run. The government is not in the business to make a profit. It is also not run to bankrupt all of it's programs for the Poor and Middle Class who make this country run. You do not cut off the nose to spite the faces of 99% of the population either.

Obama having a great photo op of a family does not qualify as the only resume to be president. Surely Obama is a smart man but it takes more than being smart it takes being smart and having experience. Something Obama has yet to obtain in his limited years in public office. I am sure one day Obama will after years in office learn and have those years of expererence to then make him a great president. Until that time comes, we have to have the best, qualified, experienced person to represent all the citizens of America now.

Obama spoke of his health plan everyone could pay for. Hillary spoke of a health plan for everyone and for those who could not afford to pay as when you are poor how can you afford to pay? Obama has failed to realize the American Poor can not pay for something if they do not have the funds to pay for them. If we are to be the richest country on earth, why are we the worst country on earth when it comes to caring for the poorest and middle class in benefits to maintain?

For the past 7+ years we have had Emperor Bush and his Dick spend away the economy of America. In the Mid East Unjust War we have been and continue to spend $500,000 dollars every 30 seconds.

How much every 30 seconds has Obama stated he plans to spend on American Citizens? Hillary has stated with only a 2% increase in payroll taxes would the Social Security be good for decades to come. Obama has failed to even address this major issue. Why, I keep asking? I guess it goes back to that word 'Change' Obama continues to use all the time without any documented facts to list what his 'Change' represents. At least with Hillary she has a proven track record over 35 years of Public Service that out numbers anyone else running for president.

Charity starts at home, not over seas and then to help those at home. With Hillary Clinton we surely know she supports charity at home for all American Citizens.
