Obama Wins South Carolina; Plus, Bill's Jesse Jackson Comparison

Um, polls have been closed for 1 min and 50 seconds and MSNBC has already called South Carolina for Obama. According to the network itself, 0 percent of precincts have reported. More analysis to come.

By the way, earlier today Bill Clinton was asked in South Carolina what it means that it takes two Clintons to compete with one Obama. He said (and I'm paraphrasing), "Well, listen. Jesse Jackson won this state, too." Yikes. That answer has nothing to do with the question, but it does do three things. One, it lowers expectations. Two, it attributes Obama's victory exclusively to his race. It basically means, "Hey, a black candidate is always going to win this state." And three, it compares Barack Obama to a guy who is considered exclusively an advocate for black America, and whom many white Americans have an uncomfortable relationship with.

And, of course, it injects race into the conversation. Considering the fact that Bill Clinton has been running around South Carolina chastising reporters for focusing on race, it's a pretty cynical thing to say. Very strategic, and not very pretty.

Update: I'm still irritated by this B. Clinton statement. It's really dismissive of black voters: it suggests that they will always vote for a black candidate, instead of evaluating candidates on their merits. And it ignores the fact that just a few weeks ago, H. Clinton was crushing Obama in heavily black South Carolina.

Update Update: Video of B. Clinton's statement after the jump.

Yikes is right. Look, I know that there has been a lot of coverage of Bill Clinton lately about how he has engaged in "heated" exchanges and is "on the attack" against Obama (some of the coverage has been fair, but some has been exaggerated), but unless we are missing another part of the question, his comment about Jesse Jackson is totally irrelevant. In fact it's insulting. He seems to be implying that ALL black voters will automatically vote for a Black candidate despite their stance on certain issues. I wonder if he would make the same cloak and dagger statements about women if it suited him at the time?
Although I have always said that I thought that Clinton was a good, but flawed President, his behavior and comments in the last couple of weeks, has severely diminished him in my eyes. I can't put my finger on it, but his behavior makes me uncomfortable, or "suspicious" as Debra Dickson said on the Colbert report, which makes me skeptical of Hillary because she seems unwilling to reel him in or take responsibility for his actions.

I was watching the boob tube. Obama was giving his victory speach in SC. I was shocked to see mainly white folks sitting behind him. Why would he set the stage in such a way? Did only whites attend the event? No! He is playing the RACE CARD! I have been to dozens of events such as this. Staff workers hand out posters and direct attendies where to sit and when to applaud. This makes my stomach turn. Wake up and smell propaganda.

This is a serious problem with the Dems...Women are voting for Hillary because she's a woman, and Obama because he's black.

Doesn't anyone care about THE ISSUES?? >THE ISSUES PEOPLE

"Women are voting for Hillary because she's a woman, and Obama because he's black."

Simply not true, that is a punditry construct.

Check the exit polls - blacks AND women voted for Barack.

I just read somewhere (a comment on Political Punch) that Bill Clinton was asked whether Obama could win as a black candidate and the reporter added the "double teaming" part before Clinton answered, but the first part of the question was cut off, making the answer sound puzzling. Does anyone have a clip which begins prior to the "double team" part of the question? I've tried looking and I can only find the clip that starts with the second part of the question. That makes so much sense to me, I'll bet that's exactly what happened!! I'm sure the Clintons are tearing their hair out trying to find the whole clip, because no one would believe them if they tried to explain it.

Top 3 things we learned in South Carolina last week...
Now that Barak Obama has beaten Bill and Hill like Frederick Douglas beat overseers, let's reflect on what we have learned in South Carolina:

1. Bill Clinton is actually not Black. In fact, he is a cocky, Southern white boy who will gladly seduce votes from racists the way he seduced the Black middle class for so many years. Is it safe to say that Clinton has officially gotten his Martha's Vinyard pass revoked now that he has finally revealed the C.R.A.C.K.E.R. he's been hiding behind that trademark country-dumb grin? Here's what many of us have always known about Bill Clampett: he was the president to oversee the biggest prison boom in world history, the displacement of millions of jobs due to NAFTA, and the fabrication of the mythical welfare queen monster of the 90s.

2. Bob Johnson is actually not gangster for selling B.E.T. to MTV for a billion dollars. Bob Johnson is, in fact, the dirty uncle-est of Toms, a billionaire suit and tieCOON who is the Frank Lucas of the entertainment world. Not only did Bob Johnson turn B.E.T. into cultural crack by slanging stereotypes and murdering any reflection on real issues, but he created the psychosocial nuclear bomb that B.E.T. has become and sold it to one of the axis of evil telecom companies (Viacom) that would gladly dismantle it and sell the radioactive bits and pieces back to us for a small fee. Okay, that might be a slight exaggeration, but you have to admit going from Teen Summit to Hot Ghetto Mess is as foul as B.J.'s reference to Obama's "doing something in the neighborhood" and "coming to dinner". B.J. needs to shut up and bust up that billion for schools, housing, and healthcare for Black folks.

3. We need a new party. Let's face it, Barack Obama might due for one of Paul Mooney's famous Nigga Wake Up Calls. I don't know the brother well enough to say for sure, but he may need a cigarette or two after campaigning in the south. If he is clear about U.S. history, then he knows that America was built on White Supremacy, and that he represents the next major challenge to that foundational ideology of this country. He is a brave soul whom I cherish just for his existence. But if he believes white America has transcended race, some drunk LSU football fans might help him get clear on that. Actually, that clip of the LSU fans is a good example of why we need a third party.

In that clip, you can see the Southern White Democrat--the one explaining how generational poverty is bad for Black folks, and that's why the projects should be torn down... and the Southern white Republican--the one who says "we don't want no more niggers in New Orleans," and that's why the projects should be torn down... So basically we Black folks in the south are caught between a noose and a knife in the back. Or, putting analogies aside, we Black folks in the south are caught between a Bush and a Clinton.

So what's a southern brother to do with his vote? Well, if Barak's Democratic nomination bid happens to get stymied by more Clinton race baiting or by the fairytale of the Democrats being the party of Black people's interests finally ending, then Barak should go independent and take the millions of people of all races who support him in a different direction. And here is the main thing I learned in South Carolina: Barak Obama could do something even bigger than becomin president, he could be the first American since the Civil Rights era to successfully transform the structure and substance of American politics.

But then again I guess the Republicans would use the demise of the Democrats, their pet opposition, to take another 8 years of our time, money, and freedom. I don't know, what do you think?

Quit jumping all over race! Perhaps he was implying that you can win SC without winning the nomination - that's what Jesse Jackson did against Bill.
