Dissecting HRC's New Attacks on BHO
The Clinton camp has unveiled two new attacks on Barack Obama: (1) He plagiarized a handful of lines in one of his speeches from Deval Patrick, the Governor of Massachusetts and a prominent Obama supporter, and (2) he once promised to accept federal funds in the general election if the GOP candidate agreed to do the same, in a move that would honor and preserve the campaign finance system in this country, but has abandoned that pledge as greenbacks have flowed in by the tens of millions.
The first observation is that both of these attacks are substantively correct. The second observation is that they are both pretty weak tea.
Let's tackle the plagiarism first. As you can see at this site, there is indisputable video evidence that Obama used about 30 seconds of Patrick's speech without crediting him. The problem, and you can see this at the link above, is that Patrick himself told Obama to use the content because the attacks Obama is facing in this campaign about substituting style/words/speechifying for substance are attacks Patrick faced when he ran for Governor of Massachusetts. Does this make the plagiarism okay? No. But does it basically make the story a non-issue? That's for the voter to decide. I suspect so.
There's also the fact that Clinton has lifted lines from Obama's speeches on occasion, including Obama's signature "Fired up and ready to go." But if Obama points that out, he's playing Clinton's game. If Obama says, "Sure I steal, but you steal, too" what the voters will likely hear is "We're both politicians, so what's the problem?" And that diminishes Obama's transcendent, new-politics appeal.
As for the financing charge — about a year ago, Obama did indeed call on the eventual general election candidates to use public financing instead of hounding the American people (and God knows how many shady figures) for the hundreds of millions it takes to run a presidential campaign. Now that he's got the most dominant fundraising machine in American history, Obama is ignoring that pledge. This is a legitimate argument for John McCain to make, since he's likely to accept public financing due to his relatively anemic fundraising thus far. But it's a bit silly coming from Hillary Clinton, who was the first candidate to blow off public financing, in anticipation of historic fundraising totals.
In the end, these attacks are little more than an attempt to divert media attention from Obama's impending victories in the WI/HI primaries tonight. And don't be surprised that these attacks aren't stronger: If HRC had anything better on Obama, we would have seen it by now.
Update: Two things I should have mentioned. (1) More or else every speech a politician delivers is "plagiarized," because it was written by speechwriters. There isn't an awful lot of originality coming from these people. (2) Obama bucks this trend a little bit, because he speaks off the cuff beautifully from time to time.
Update: This plagiarism thing apparently has legs. The Clinton campaign just zapped around this link, which argues that Deval Patrick's explanation of how he offered his lines to Obama doesn't make sense. Then the Huffington Post posted this link, arguing that H. Clinton borrows lines and themes from B. Clinton. I refuse to give further developments of this story a new blog post.

Why is it now that it seems Obama might just win, Democrats are starting to become disillusioned about him?
Can it be that democrats feel more comfortable as underdogs and/or losers politically? And now that we have a really good chance, we feel the need to sabotage ourselves?
I remember feeling similarly around 2004 when my beloved Redsox finally won the World Series after 85 years. I didn't know what to do with myself now that the curse of the Bambino was over.
It was only cool to be a Redsox fan when they lost it in the final moments. Now it is not so cool... dare I say it. Almost Republican to be s Sox fan.
It just seems eerily similar to that. And now, evrytime Clinton or Obama seems to have an edge on the other, the MSM and blogs start shooting them down. It is almost better to be in second place... how can this be good?
Do democrats instinctively cannibalize themselves when they think they are in position to win?

You may be right about "weak tea" but what if the latest misstep is part of a pattern (one that a supine media has been too lazy or love drunk to discern until, say, November)?
Senator Obama -- In your speech on Super Tuesday, perhaps by coincidence, you used key phrases from a 1984 speech by Jesse Jackson (“Our time has come. Our time has come” DNC), a poem by June Jordan (“we are the ones we have been waiting for” -- “Poem for South African Women”), and a song by Norman Hutchins (“a change is coming”) – but you did not credit any of them for the key lines in your speech. Isn’t this the kind of speechwriting that doomed Joe Biden’s presidential campaign in the 1980s, and why should your speeches be held to a different standard?

He should have credited Patrick when he made the remarks in his speech. He has in the past. Many, many, many politicians pick up slogans and phrases that heve been used before. I don't think its a big deal. He remains on point. Clinton, on the other hand, has been stealing from Obama and Edwards right along. Whenever one or the other gained traction with something, Hillary Clinton was right there a few days later ttrying to absorb it as her own. John Edwards at on of the debates used "this is personal for me" as his framing device for many of his responces. Only days later during Clinton's pre New Hampshire tearfull performance art piece, she suddenly started with the "its personal" theme. Obama was for change. Hillary Clinton was for change...for 35 years. He picked up some of her husband's convention speech in her own speech at Coretta Scott King's service. She gave a speech that was nearly lifted from an old Jimmy Carter speech. At another debate John Edwards answered a question with his "Blockbuster" remark. The next debate Clinton used exactly the same remark in one of her answers.
Barack Obama never promised to take public financing. He aswered a questionaire asking if he would take public financing if the other candidate did. He answered "Yes..." then went on to qualify the situation. He in no way pledged to take public financing. John McCain has a doubious history of campaign financing in this primary election. He really shouldn't be making an issue of this.
To me, both of these are non issues.

If you listen to Obama's exact words, he said that he would agree to discuss public financing if he was the Democratic nominee. Isn't the convention in August? Doesn't that mean he has yet to win the nomination? Let's not put the cart before the horse, people. He may for all we know keep that promise.

The only thing Shrillary gains from this is the distraction from the fact that there were entire districts in NY reporting zero Obama votes on election night, her own lack of substance, and her need to eat her young.
And someone needs to give the press a reality check because both issues are non-issues. Can you imagine the fun the Clinton campaign would have had with an agreement by Obama to commit to public funds before he is the nominated candidate? Wow, he would have been called every name in the book for presuming to claim the prize before the voters had spoken.

"Speech writer" is a profession. And the top politicians hire them without shame. So, unless the Clinton Highness writes everything she utters herself, I think she should let go and move on.....

Obama supporters amaze me that they are so unconcerned about the millions that their candidate has collected from the employees of companies such as Exelon, Goldman Sachs, and Citigroup and from the lawyers at firms that represent these companies. Obama should be worried about the MSM pointing out his checkered record on donations should he be the nominee.

And that Rezko thing? Turns out Rezko bundled at least $168,000 for Obama over the years, three times the amount that Obama has admitted to. All of this might be excusable in a candidate who has not made reforms to election financing the linchpin of his campaign but it just might be fatal to the campaign of such a "reformer".

Congratulations Barack Obama but get ready to brace yourself for the onslaught of the Clinton machine. The screaming, the kicking and the clawing is ready to hit you full force. This campaign is going to get nasty. Why don't we know that sweet Hillary is owed the Democratic nomination? It is going to get nasty and I for one am going to sit back and enjoy the show for that is truly what it will be, a sad nationally televised hissey fit. The Clinton machine is geared up and going to morph itself into a steam roller and with luck all that will be flattened will be the Clinton reputation.
It has been acclaimed for years that Hillary Clinton is unelectable, and to her credit she did not accept this forcast. But the pudding is being jelled and reality is hitting her in the face. I think Jonh McCain is jumping on the beat down Barack Obama bandwogon because he and the Republican Party know opposing Hillary would be the only chance for Republican victory. It is now time for us to pray that backroom political wrangling does not become the order of the day. With Hillary what are the odds, will she be able to stand tall and accept the will of the people? Democracy---WE THE PEOPLE!
Save your speeches Hillary we know that if there is a chance for change you are not the solution!

This plagiarism charge is ridiculous. Speeches don't come with footnotes. It's not stealing when the author tells you to use it. Yes, an attribution would have been better, and if this was a written article it would be a bigger deal, but it wasn't in writing. Even the copying Hillary is doing would be meaningless if she weren't being hypocritical.
Besides, now that we know the results of last night's primaries/caucuses, it appears the charge doesn't stick.

You dont need a weather man to predict the direction the wind is blowing. Obama is highly admired. All the Clintons of this world know this fact and they are scarred. You and me know it also. All roads now lead to barackobama.com. The whole world wants to know who is this guy who will not let the Clintons have their sleep. So they keep coming. And this has made the website to become the most visited official presidential campaign website of any aspirant ever since the invention of the internet. If there is any doubting Clinton finding this claim difficult to believe, try to use Google's Page Rank, sitting on your browser, to check it out by yourself. This is a world record worth documenting.
Cheers, we can!
