Zimbabwe: What 200,000% Inflation Means in Real Terms
Zimbabwe goes to the polls Saturday to see if it can manage to democratically oust 28-year despot Robert Mugabe. I say "manage" because Mugabe can't win a fair election, but he can rig it so that he wins, as he is widely suspected of having done in the past. Opposition candidate Simba Makoni presents a stronger challenge than any Mugabe has seen recently, but suspicions about the election have already been raised.
What makes Zimbabwe unique among the world's failed states is its inflation: a historic 200,000 percent. Here's what that means in real life, from Somewhere in Africa, via Andrew Sullivan:
To understand what 200,000 percent inflation means, a journalist friend I was traveling with, N., said that on Friday, he had lunch at a hotel in Harare , where a local beer cost 2 million Zimbabwean dollars (less than $1). He passed by the hotel after work the same day and the same beer was going for more than 4 million.
Earlier this month, the AP reported that $1US was worth 25,000,000 Zimbabwe dollars.

Oakland's mayor doesn't run the city any better than this guy, so stop the complaining. Remember the trash piling up in Oakland? Clean up Oakland , in our own backyard, before complaining about something 12,000 miles away.

We can't even *talk* about issues in another country, Joyce? Sorry, that is a little extreme in my opinion. Anyway, you guys in Oakland can have a recall if you want - that's not an option people in Zimbabwe have.

JP dear, I live in Marin, not in Zimbabwe Oakland. If you know anything about Marin, we are progressive and recycle. My boyfriend has a farm in Humboldt and grows Humboldt County Gold, part of the "Emerald Triangle. So good. I will take another toke.

"Oakland's mayor doesn't run the city any better than this guy, so stop the complaining."
Yeah, that's right Joyce. That 200,000% inflation sure pales into insignificance against the absence of recycling ordinances up Oakland way. Maybe.
Kudos to your boyfriend, there - he must grow some hella-good 'erb.
xx

Joyce, sorry, never heard of Marin, but I live about 2,500 miles away from you. That doesn't change the fact that your analogy is full of holes. The Oakland mayor didn't take away all the homes and food sources of the people. Did he send his thugs out to beat up his opponents and their supporters? Cut the health programs so badly that womens' life expectancy is half of what it was a decade ago? Oakland's mayor is not doing a good job, and Oakland has serious problems, no question, but to suggest that it is the same as Zimbabwe simply isn't true, and to suggest that we can't even discuss these problems because they occur in another country is ridiculous.

Let's change the topic to your boyfriend's handling of your drug habit and whether the trash men came last week, very progressive, very productive...
certainly the state of Africa has NOTHING to do with the rest of world, how prescient...

Justin dear, we have so many problems at home, we should concentrate on what we know best. Let us clean up America(e.g. regular trash pick ups) and be a shinning example to the rest of the world first, before we start criticizing other countries. My boyfriend is a farmer who brings happiness to many people. He also teaches them how to grow their crops better. I am busy running the 3000 square foot house(I do recycle). Great view of the Bay from here up on the hill above Sausalito.

As zimbabwe implodes, Joyce fretts over Oakland, a place she too does not live. There are plenty of blogs and discussions on the "sufferings" of oaklandians. They posit among other things, will another fire destroy more of those multi million dollar hillside homes?, will their hapless team ever get another super bowl ring?, is the world class harbour and shinny airport going to be impacted by the upcomming recesion (-1%) growth?, will 3% inflation crimp the consumer lifestyle?....these are the big issues that 400,000 demolished houses of the urban zimbabwean, or the beaten to a pulp opposition leaders Morgan Tsvangarai, pale in importance. The point is Joyce, that out of such disasters came the Wiemer Republic, or the Taliban, or the FARC, or the D.R.C...imploding states are very much all our concerns, lest you be Shocked to pick up the newspaper in 2010...err...log onto the internet, and read about a U.S. soldier losing his life, supporting a peace keeping mission in Zimbabwe, if you think their is no oil in zimbabwe, you are correct, although I suspect you couldnt find zimbabwe on a map of Southern Africa, you might discover it is has plenty of Uranium....and besides, the beuty of the information ubiquity of the internet, is you can take another puff, and float of to a website where OAKLAND is the main subject......
Back to the Subject at hand, doesent Robert's musctache give him that trully uncanny resemblence too........LIFE! STRANGER THAN FICTION!

Oakland has their own Mugabe. Since Dellums election, there has been criticism of the secret nature of the task forces Dellums established, despite having repeatedly vowed to restore "transparency" to city government, and criticism of disarray among the task forces.
Within a few months of Dellums' election, Oakland voters were already rating him poorly on key issues. On a scale of 1-10, Dellums scored a 3.7 on improving education, a 3.8 on crime, 4.3 on ecomic development and a 4.3 on providing housing.
According to local media, Dellums "frittered" away his first year in office, making no significant policy initiatives in those areas of concern to average citizens, beyond a smoking ban at bus stops. Meanwhile, crime in the city increased dramatically, with Oakland being declared the 4th most dangerous city in the nation. Dellums resisted calls to increase the police force, claiming citizens did not want an oppressive police force, but local reporters expressed skepticism. Multiple "recall Dellums" websites have appeared.
Elise Ackerman, a reporter for the Bay Area News Group and a resident of Oakland bought the domain recallmayordellums.com and sent an open letter to Dellums that was covered in the local press, saying to Dellums, "African Americans and Latinos live in fear in Oakland because of your lies. Middle-class residents working two jobs live in fear because of your lies. Nurses, teachers and social workers live in fear because of your lies." Near the end of the message, she continues "You are not effective, you are not honest, you have no integrity and you should step aside."
