Congressman Hodes Calls for Investigation of "Independent" Military Analysts
As Jonathan Stein reported on Wednesday, Sen. Carl Levin has begun putting pressure on Defense Secretary Robert Gates to investigate allegations made in last Sunday's New York Times report regarding the Pentagon's use of "ex"-military officials to shape public perception of the Iraq War.
Yesterday Congressman Paul Hodes of New Hampshire joined in by officially requesting Chairman John Tierney of the House Oversight and Government Reform Subcommittee on National Security and Foreign Affairs to hold a hearing on the matter. Hodes asserts that "the Department of Defense used these analysts to manipulate public opinion toward supporting the Administration’s policy in the War in Iraq."
From Congressman Hodes' letter:
Dear Chairman Tierney:
I respectfully request that the Oversight and Government Reform Subcommittee on National Security and Foreign Affairs hold a hearing on the information contained in an article in the New York Times published on Sunday, April 20, alleging that the Pentagon used undue influence with former military officers serving as "independent" military analysts commenting on developments on the war in Iraq for network news stations.
The report detailed a concerted effort by former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfield and Department of Defense officials to manipulate network news military analysts to promote Bush administration spin on the war in Iraq, even though many analysts knew the information not to be accurate. In fact, one analyst referred to the efforts by the Pentagon as "brainwashing."
It's important to criticize the Pentagon for this, and I applaud both Levin and Hodes for speaking out. But I've come to expect, as I think many Americans have, a certain amount of military meddling in public discourse—it's naive to think otherwise.
What I'd really like to see is some pressure put on the media networks that gratuitously supplied the national platform for the Pentagon. What is their responsibility to ensure their "independent" analysts are legit? After all, they're using public airwaves.

On somewhat of a tangent: Noam Chomsky described how the US Govt. knew that, post-NAFTA, ordinary people would be devastated by "free trade" policies designed to throttle them for corporate gain...
"He cites National Intelligence Council projections that globalization 'will be rocky, marked by chronic financial volatility and a widening economic divide ... Regions, countries, and groups feeling left behind will face deepening economic stagnation, POLITICAL INSTABILITY, AND CULTURAL ALIENATION. They will foster political, ethnic, ideological, and RELIGIOUS EXTREMISM, ALONG WITH THE VIOLENCE THAT OFTEN ACCOMPANIES IT.'"
Actually..., one has to question here whether the issue is shaping public perception, or how "Pentagon projections agree with plans set to savagely suppress expected retaliatory responses. How to stop the cycle of violence? End all types of exploitation including so-called one-way 'free trade,' adopting instead a fair trade model like Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez's government follows that's equitable to all trading partners and their people. THE ANTIDOTE TO BAD POLICY, BRUTAL REPRESSION, WARS AND THE TERRORISM THEY GENERATE IS EQUITY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL. HOWEVER, THE US WON'T ADOPT THE ONE SOLUTION SURE TO WORK BECAUSE IT HURTS PROFITS THAT COME AHEAD OF PEOPLE NEEDS," from Thoughts on Terrorism: Noam Chromsky, by Stephan Lendman, 07/25/07, The Populist Party.
HA, HA, HA--LIKE DUH--this wouldn't be America if the establishment wasn't trying to put one over on us...!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
On the issue of the investigation of "Independent" Military Analysts, let's hope that Congress takes a hard look at the major news networks who were co-opted into this deception pre and post-911. All the major commercial and cable news outlets have become talking heads for the Bush/Cheney Administration and this has got to be exposed, investigated, and perhaps even prosecuted for the loss of lives inflicted by the war in Iraq.
Just my opinion.

I'm pulling this right out of left field, but, just for a second, imagine how difficult it would be to "brainwash" the Free World without the help (forget that--the outright partnership) of the Fourth Estate...
There's too much "expletive" going down today--MTBE for example, where now the oil companies pay lots of money to dispose of it as toxic waste, while the National Research Council concluded that it "has little impact on improving ozone air quality and has some disadvantages--like poisoning the "expletive" out of everyone...)--for any enquiring mind to really believe that the Mass Media is "all innocent like" here.
On the other hand--you've really got to hand it to these people... No one's nearly as good at swearing there's no Heaven and praying there's no Hell.
Hey--I've got Big News for you: You dirty dealing SOBs have done a fantastic job of turning Heaven into Hell...
Only thing left is to kill anyone who dares opose you (because--DUH--you've got to finish what you've begun)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The fact that the NY Times says this..., and the Washington Post says that..., these occasional tidbits... going out to their limited readership...--it's just plausible deniability...
IT'S LIKE...: Schwarzenegger's boast that Hydrogen filling-stations now stretch from the Mexican border to the Canadian border; OH RIGHT..., there's one for every Hydrogen car--all 26 of them...
IT'S LIKE: The ACLU's full-page ad campaign slamming Bush for monitoring overseas calls--where's the full court press against BP's Northstar Alaskan oilfield?
In the region perhaps most affected by climate change--pack-ice 3x the size of the UK has melted--to get its hot oil to shore across the pack-ice, BP buried a pipeline...
Furthermore, the Army Corp. of Engineers calculated the probability of a large spill as being as high as 24% over the 15 year project life, and, where normally oil pipelines are monitored once a week, Northstar is monitored only once a month--by drilling randomly through ice, often in near-darkness...
It's likely that any leak that occured in Winter would go unnoticed till Spring; how come there's no ACLU full-page ad campaign on the plight of the North Slope Indians...
IT'S LIKE: The US Dep't. of Energy says that off-shore wind farms have virtually unlimited potential; meanwhile the permanent magnet MagLev Wind Turbines produce 20% more juice and have a low center of gravity (perfect for off-shore applications); so... why isn't there a Govt. program to mass produce them...
WHERE'S THE MEDIA HERE?
WHERE ARE THOSE SO VERY, VERY "SENSITIVE" CONGRESSMEN????????????????

Oh man oh man oh man, if you could only see me now--I'm beet red!!!!
How very, very embarrassing--I've been going on and on and on--yet it's all so simple!!!!!!!
The NY Times (and certain Govt. actors) are scared that if THE PEOPLE don't know the truth about Iraq and Afghanistan, then there will be no Anti-War Movement--and no end to the Wars
Ah Gosh--this makes soooo... much sense...
CONGRESS MUST INVESTIGATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

CALL CONGRESSMAN HODES and ask him to investigate the dangers of compact fluorscent light bulbs...
"The mercury-vapor standard in federal and state safety guidelines is 300 nanograms per cubic meter of air. Broken bulbs created levels that often exceeded that standard and sometimes exceeded 25,000 or even 50,000 nanograms per cubic meter for short periods of time, according to the study," DEP sheds light on bulb dangers, John Richardson, Portland Press Herald, 02/26/08.
Making electricity accounts for 40% of all carbon emissions in the US, and approx. one quarter of global emissions...
In other words..., if George W. hadn't broken his campaign promise to cut power company emissions..., we wouldn't be poisoning" kids here...
Perhaps most alarming is the fact that the package (holding bulbs) only warns against improper disposal...
How can Bush and Co. trade "attainable emissions reductions" for dangerous products...
CONGRESS MUST INVESTIGATE!!!!!
OH "EXPLETIVE"--THEY'RE TOO DAMN BUSY PUTTING PRESSURE ON BOB GATES...

I recently lived in China five years where all TV stations, newspapers, etc. "managed" the news--but at least everyone knew--it was the DEPARTMENT OF PROPOGANDA in charge of it all.

Shirley, that's what's so damn funny here:
WHO KNOWS BEST??????????...--"With enactment of ... on December 26, 2007, Congress has approved a total of about $700 billion for military operations, base security, reconstruction, foreign aid, embassy costs, and veterans' health care ... The Administration requested $195.5 billion for war-related activities ... for FY2008," The Cost of Iraq, Afghanistan, and other Global War on Terror Operations Since 9/11, Congressional Research Service.
OH REALLY NOW...--"But collectively, the men on the plane and several dozen other military analysts represent more than 150 military contractors either as lobbyists, senior executives, board members or consultants."
Shocking to the conscience it is--this is what we've come to...
OH BOY: "The audit released Sunday ... provides the latest snapshot of an uneven reconstruction effort that has cost U.S. taxpayers more than $100 billion. Last year ... one in six dollars--charged by U.S. contractors for Iraq reconstruction were questional or unsupported ...," Investigators: Millions in Iraq contracts never finished, Yahoo, 04/27/08.
Of course, EVEN LARGER amounts of Iraq's own oil money has been spent on such "shoddy" construction.
Someone ought to do a story on how many Iraq Reconstruction projects have actually been successfully completed...
What a mess--and then the "terrorists" go and knock out the electricity...
OR, CONSIDERING HOW A SINGLE BULLET TO THE USS MADDOX SPARKED VIETNAM--MAYBE IT WAS THE CIA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not good enough for this field, or, you've all gone soft on me.
DON'T LET THEM STIFLE THE ANTI-WAR MOVEMENT!!!
China and the instance at hand differ where we were attacked...
That said...
The American People are moralists with no morals...
It's no good saying you're never going to kill anyone by driving buzzed (slightly over the limit).
Toe the line or shut your trap..., is that what I'm saying...? Does it apply here?
In fact, that's the real issue. The difference between the leaders and the followers.
It's like..., with the illegal aliens...--don't these people represent a real threat to people's security (having no social services "blanket").
People these days are circling the wagons against the dopers..., but the way I see it..., shouldn't people who drive with a 1.5 blood alcohol...
What's the penalty for a first DUI...
In California it's like you have to bail yourself out..., then go to court and pay a $1,000 fine (not knowing, actually...)...
Is this like saying there goes next year's campaign contribution, or, where in California the legislature lowered the legal blood alcohol level to 0.8, there's got to be an extra buck in it for them somewhere...
