Starbucks' Slutty Mermaid Making Waves

pikes-place-logo.jpgLately, I've seen some changes at the two Starbucks that live less than a block away from the Mother Jones office. Last month, they both started pushing a new blend called "Pike Place Roast" as their regular drip coffee, as part of a campaign to compete with brisk coffee sales at Dunkin' Donuts and McDonald's. As part of the campaign, Starbucks re-introduced its 1971 brown-and-white logo featuring a two-tailed mermaid. Okay, technically it's a siren, but regardless, the image of a female figure brazenly spreading its tails has made a few Christians vow to boycott the company.

"The Starbucks logo has a naked woman on it with her legs spread like a prostitute," explains alarmist Mark Dice, of a Christian group called The Resistance. "Need I say more? It's extremely poor taste, and the company might as well call themselves Slutbucks."

While I'm curious what the value of a Slutbuck is relative to a Schrutebuck, I'm worried that Dice doesn't seem to understand the Starbucks siren is half-fish. She doesn't have legs to spread, much less a vagina to go between them. The fact that Dice doesn't get the difference between a fin and a foot may be an example of what abstinence-only funding does to education, but it's certainly not the first time spunky Christians have boycotted the multinational company.

Just last summer, a group of Christian ladies boycotted Frappuccinos because there was a homosexual-agenda-pushing Armistead Maupin quote on some of the cups. Others have boycotted the company because of anti-God quotes.

All I can say is that if Starbucks goes down, it won't be because of a handful of Christian boycotters. And it won't be because a friend of a CATO Institute vice-president couldn't buy a customized "Laissez Faire" gift card, either. As the WSJ tells it, a Starbucks slump will be due to oversaturation and a faltering economy that makes $4 lattes seem like less of a necessity. Whether that's an act of God or not is for you to decide.

"The Starbucks logo has a naked woman on it with her legs spread like a prostitute,"

why is it not common sense to label people like this as 'depraved'?

I can tell off the bat that this guy is a sexual deviant.

I would have never thought of the logo as anything sexual. Much less something so specific as a prostitute.

If my head is filled with penises, my eyes see phallic objects everywhere.

The particular woodblock print that Starbucks used in its logo of the twin-tailed siren is over five hundred years old.

Sweet.

And, for the record, I love Starbucks. The Pike Place Roast is an awesome morning cup.

If Starbucks goes down, it will be because their coffee is bitter and acrid, not smooth, sweet, and good tasting. Most gas station coffee is easier to drink.

Also, their choices are so broad that it takes forever to figure out what you want.

All criticism of Starbucks aside, the new Pike Place Roast really is an amazing cup of coffee.

Whenever xians complain about filth, I point them to Judges 19 and ask them to explain why it is ok to read the bible when there are stories about women being gang raped to death

"...with legs spread like a prostitute. Er, as opposed to women who are NOT prostitutes and somehow have sex with their legs closed?

I see a silver lining here: If the fundies insist on having sex with their women's legs modestly locked, they will soon stop reproducing.

I'm not sure if she died from the gang rape, but being 'cutteth into 12 pieces and sent to all the borders of Israel' couldn't have been good for her health either. I can't believe people base their lives on what's said in that ridiculous book!

This reminds me of the joke about two lions talking in their cage off the arena at the Roman Colliseum.
So, what's on the agenda today?
Oh, the usual stuff, sacrifice the sacred cow, athletic competitions, then the Gladiators and topped off with throwing the Christians to us to tear apart and eat.
Gods save me, Christians give me gas!
Christians give everyone gas!

Makes me glad that I'm an educated pagan and have better things to complain about than a misinterpreted logos.

OK, like most people here this pisses me off. People who call themselves Christians who really are Puritans can boycott Starbucks because of inoffensive logos but Dunkin Donuts is acceptable? DD pays poverty prices for their coffee beans. Coffee farmers are starving and loosing their farms because DD works hard to keep the coffee prices down and they make ungodly profits from it. Oxfam and other orgs. have tried to get them to pay realistic prices but they could care less about people as long as they make their huge profits. At least Starbucks has made halfhearted attempts at going fair trade.
Logos that wouldn't make anyone over the age of 10 think twice, bad. Impoverishing thousands of small coffee farmers, OK.
What passes for a Christian in the religious right is unholy.

Oh yeah one more thing,

Venti??? Laaaarge. Venti?? Laaarge. One thing DD has right in their commercials. Uh, fretalien?

Rev. Bob, you are very intolerant of people that disagree with you. You are as intolerant as the Puritans. What this world needs is more tolerance for other ideas, not less. It is everybody's right to boycott whatever offends them. The feminists get very offended over things that you may consider to be trivial, but yet we still respect their right to express themselves. You criticize masturbation as being "infantile". The feminists beg to differ with your condescending attitude on the subject. They don't need a man to be happy. You are the one that has the infantile attitude. You are like the Puritan that you abhor. I recommend 7 years of deep thearapy for you.

Christians follow the way of Christ. As stated above (05/09/08 13:47), Christ's way is "feeding the hungry, comforting the afflicted, all that Bolshie stuff".

The pseudo-Cristians are hate-mongers and domineering control freaks. These people aren't Christians--they are bigots.

As shown in the daily news, and in "Jesus Camp", these bigots are a clear and present danger to America, and all We hold dear!

It is people like Mr. Dice that give Christians a bad name. ONE GROUP does not necessarily speak for all of us and especially ONE person doesn't. ALL Christians are NOT STUPID. I agree he must have a personal problem.

Dice needs to take a step back and take a larger look at Christian iconography. Human females spreading their vulvas exposing their vaginas are carved on Christian Cathedrals throughout England and Wales. What's next Dice? Objecting to coffee because it is warm and wet?

Posted by: Frank Koehler on 05/10/08 at 10:23 AM  Respond

Frank, there are not just Christian nuts, we must not forget the Jewish nuts. The book,Jewish History, Jewish Religion: The Weight of 3,000 Years By Israel Shahak, with a foreword by Gore Vidal.
"When the Roman historian Tacitus pointed out 19 centuries ago that the Jews are unique among the races of man in their intense hatred and contempt for all races but their own, he was only repeating what many other scholars had discovered before him. For the next 1,900 years other investigators came to similar conclusions, either from a study of the Jews' religious writings or from a study of the Jews' behavior toward non-Jews.
Notable among these was the Great Reformer, Martin Luther, who in 1543 wrote :
“Does not their Talmud say, and do not their rabbis write, it is no sin if he does not keep his oath to a heathen. Therefore, to steal and rob, as they do with their usury, from a heathen is a divine service. For they hold that they cannot be too hard on us nor sin against us, because they are of the noble blood and circumcised saints; we, however, are cursed goyim. And they are the masters of the world, and we are their servants, yea, their cattle.…” The Jews responded to Luther like they responded to all the others. They put him down as just another "hater," blinded by religious bigotry. And today that's still the Jews' standard answer to everyone who says or writes anything about them except the most fawning praise." The Jewish Talmud is a hate book. It should be renounced by all progressive Jews as such.

Wow... The guy called them "Slutbucks" because of a logo of a woman with fish tails... What makes it even funnier is how low resolution the old school logo is. You can't see any details, and look at the way the tails are bent... He claims they are spread like a whore, I say I would like to meet the whore who could bend like that!

At least it is not as bad as what Israel Knesset Member Nissim Ze'ev proposed, the establishing "rehabilitation centers" to suppress the sexual tendencies of gay people.
“The government should initiate this; these people are dangerous and we must keep an eye on them,” he said as the High Court discussed whether to cancel the Jerusalem gay pride parade due to the firefighters' slow-down strike. “If such a center is built, many of them will flock to it in order to help themselves. “ Ze'ev added that gay people must be made aware of “how their lifestyle is destroying our existence”. Zeev went as far as comparing the gay movement to a "plague that may destroy Jewish Israel", adding that this "plague" should be dealt with "just as the Health Ministry is dealing with bird flu." You have to keep things in perspective.

How in the world did the discussion go from Starbucks to Jew-hating? Trolls everywhere.....

Posted by: Puzzled_by_you on 05/10/08 at 6:23 PM  Respond

Well, to be fair, I wouldn't be surprised if sailors 500 years ago considered the image to be a bit salacious. After all, it *is* a siren, whose schtick in mythology was to lure and seduce the passing mariners.

Those sea voyages were *long* back then, years long sometimes, and I expect a naked, willing mermaid in that position would be a godsend for a sailor tired of rum, sodomy, and the lash.

As to the fins/legs thing, it seems to me the distinction is beside the point, and the key point is what we're supposed to imagine is at their junction. If we happen to think about it that deeply, anyway.

As to whether there's anything 'wrong' with having it as a logo, if it's contemporaneous with Martin Luther and King James, how bad could it be? It's part of *their* culture, after all, the 'more godly' culture the complainers probably think they'd like to return to.

The article is not about Starbucks, but about how wacko the Christians are. The Jews are just as wacko or more so due to their mothers, dear. Let us be "fair and balanced".

Ultra-conservative Christians can't understand why people are put off by them, and then they do something like this??? Mr. Rice must have sex on his mind to see anything "slutty" in this picture, which is more mythical than sexual. Fins are not legs, so for him to imagine a woman with her legs spread is HIS fantasy, not mine!!
