CA Gay Marriage Will Start June 17
The California state Office of Vital Records just announced that gay couples will be able to legally marry in the state starting June 17. The marriages, unless some legal impediment arises, will be valid until November, when a state-wide ballot gives Californians the opportunity to ban gay marriage. However, a poll released today showed that 51 percent of Californians approved of gay marriage, while only 41 percent disapproved. The remaining 7 percent had "no opinion."
If gay marriage stays legal in California, it may be a boon for everyone, not just the couples getting married. Gov. Schwarzenegger has already said that gay couples traveling to California to get married could provide a nice economic boost. California has the highest number of same-sex couples in the nation. If only a quarter of the 184,500 cohabiting, same-sex couples got married, it would mean 46,125 weddings. Multiply that by $27,852, the average cost of a wedding according to study by Conde Nast Bridal Group, and it would mean more than $1 billion for the state economy.
If you wanted to take things further, you could calculate in money saved by shared health care coverage, being bumped up a tax bracket on joint returns, and other similar measures, which could add up to more than $3 billion.
Gay marriage: good for the economy, bad for bigots.

Jen, why would you wish this(marriage) upon anyone? Go to divorce court sometime. You should not want to wish this curse upon anyone. Marriage will definitely be a drag on the gay lifestyle. Why get the government involved into your personal life. You don't need the hassle. Lars says,be free, vote Libertarian.
What bullshit, Lars. I'm a gay person - I don't have a gay 'life style'. I live my own life and the people I respect live their own lives, independent of any group's idea of what the norm should be. I chose to marry my long time partner in Vermont four years ago - we're still happy about that decision and we've been committed for twelve years. But if someone else is happy being non-monogamous and living openly in a commitment free way, that's what works for them. To each his own. But don't put us in a freaking box - the slut box or the boring, burby married couple box.
Having said that, Jen Phillips, I get so sick of this attempt at buttering people up to gay marriage with the argument that it creates revenue. My civil union was a quiet affair with little pomp and a lot of warmth; someone else's may be a gay extravaganza! with lots of horse feathers and dollars. That isn't the point. I took that slant four years ago, hoping to win over the prejudiced with the great American dollar. This is bigger than that and I've come to see how this dollars over hate argument trivializes the whole thing.

Congrats to all the California couples reading this who're going to get married!!! :)
Just do yourself a favor - don't spend $27k on your wedding, for God's sake! Spent $2k and put the rest on your house!

Gay Russians waving placards and rainbow flags demonstrated in central Moscow on Sunday in defiance of an official ban on gay pride events and abuse from opponents.
The annual pride demonstration had been outlawed by Moscow Mayor Yury Luzhkov, who has dubbed gay pride events "Satan's work," reflecting Russian society that remains suspicious of liberal values.
A police spokesman told AFP 36 people had been arrested at the event at which Russian Orthodox and other opponents hurled eggs at gay activists and, in one instance, were seen punching a gay man to the ground.
