Obama Fundraising Goes Bonkers After GOP's Day-Long Attack
Proving Sean at fivethirtyeight.com correct, Barack Obama has raised around $8 million since Sarah Palin's speech last night. Better than the $7 million McCain got after the Palin pick was announced. Democrats I've spoken to since the speech have had two reactions, sometimes simultaneously: (1) anger about the fact that their guy got roughed up pretty bad, and (2) fear that the GOP has a new super-effective and super-likeable surrogate. Both emotions lead to the opening of wallets. Maybe Obama doesn't want people to calm down?
For the record, Obama has responded to the beating he took last night. It's after the jump.
"You wouldn’t know that this is such a critical election by watching the convention last night. I know we had our week and so, you know, the Republicans deserve theirs. But it’s been amazing to me to watch. Over the last two nights, if you sit there and you watch it, you’re hearing a lot about John McCain – and he’s got a compelling biography as a POW. You’re hearing an awful lot about me, most of which is not true. What you’re not hearing is a lot about you."
"I mean, you haven’t heard one word about how they’re going to make the health care system work so that if a union’s negotiating with a company, it’s not all just a discussion about higher premiums, and you can actually start talking about higher wages and benefits. You haven’t heard one word about how we’re going to create more apprenticeship programs like the ones that we have here or give other people a chance to train in new trades. You haven’t heard a word about getting serious about green and alternative energy, the kind of work that is resulting in all the expansion and additional hiring here. You haven’t heard a word about how we’re going to strengthen unions so that working people get a decent stake. You haven’t heard a word about how we’re going to improve math and science education so that we can hire more engineers to create more products in green technology. You haven’t heard a word about how we’re going to deal with any aspect of the economy that is affecting you and your pocketbook day-to-day. Haven’t heard a word about it. I’m not exaggerating. Literally, two nights, they have not said a word about it. They’ve had a lot to say about me, but they haven’t had anything to say about you. And the thing that I’m insisting on in this election is that we can’t keep playing the same political games we always play."

I've got to agree, and I'm glad to see him say this. Good reaction, good things to point out.
Well said...of course! A tonic after last night's scripted circus.

Of course - Obama knows how to stay on point. One of the many reasons that I will vote for him and that I just gave my second fifty dollar donation of the campaign. I'm a part of the 8 million.

Palin's speech last night was fodder for the delegates and that's it. All of the attacks coming from her and Guilianni was a disgrace. I don't hear Obama attacking them as hard. And if one of Obama's daughters was 17 and pregnant, do you wonder if the Repubs would hesitate in attacking his family values? At least their dignity was momentarily restored by Hackabee when he gave credit to Obama being the first black person to recieve the nomination. But only for a moment.
I truly, truly, TRULY wish someone would call out Rudy's attacks on the dems for being weak on national security for what it is: cowardly, political TERRORISM!

Sarah's a great reader. Too bad none of those thoughts were hers. BTW, both candidates agreed family's were hands off, right? So after Palin spoke, who jumped on stage? Her family, which McCain oozed all over for the benefit of his party. His hands were all over them.
Yeah, Obama brought his daughters on stage twice and for the same reason, but every time you look up, out come the Palins. But of course the media dare not use them, but it's okay for McCain et al to do so. Talk about hypocracy.
Rudy was not only crass and insulting, he was a pure republican who do two things very well: try to scare people and insult people. Guilinni is a waste of food.

Frederick Lee Fuller writes: Sarah's a great reader. Too bad none of those thoughts were hers.
And here I thought I was the only mind reader around the MoJo site. Frederick seems able to read people's thoughts right through his television.
Even I can't accomplish that, after a ten-thousand mile sattelite bounce.

The millions in contributions Obama has just gleaned from Democrats will undoubtedly be invested in future Glitzkriegs. The people from my home state of Pennsylvania resisted the last one he waged when he battered them around the clock for weeks! The political figure of Palin who put the expensive state governer's plane on E-bay (as opposed to that plane Obama was soaring around Europe in) will hopefully put megalomania on trial.
The other thing that reassures me is that a recent poll shows that the DEBATES will be more telling than the AD campaigns.
On the other hand the money Obama has been funneling to the media is worrisome. But once again, the American people seem to smell the bias on the air. MSNBC was losing audience and seems to have re-directed its pundits and newscasters to be less partial.

To Kathy,
You are comparing apples to oranges. Did Obama have a private plane when he was in the senate? HOw would you expect him to get to Europe? swim? Is Palin going to walk everywhere she goes now? Does McPain use a plane to travel? Is it private? Is security an issue for travel making a private plane necessary? Why don't you think before you write something.

The Obama team is getting nervous about this woman who is such a breath of fresh air. She has actually accomplished the things Obama talks about. She has lowered taxes, cleaned up corruption, given oil funds directly to Alaskans. It'll take a Mt. McKinley size pile of mud to even begin to smirch her. Good luck.

Frederick, Majesto, was referring to the fact that Palins speech was written even before she was picked as McCain's VP. She, in fact, read the speech aloud. No mind reading involved or needed.

She didnt lower taxes, she raised taxes on oil. Dont just listen to a speech and accept it as truth, do some research. Palin was also on Stevens 527 committee. Its said she fought against the bridge to nowhere, but she was for it before it became a national joke.

It takes mind reading to know what are Sarah Palin's thoughts, and what thoughts and opinions are not hers.
Apparently Frederick is capable of that, as he's made a declaration that words she spoke were not her thoughts.
And I guess you must have been present for the writing of the speech and the selection of Palin as the VP candidate, since you're making a declaration about when when those things happened. You actually witnessed the call to Palin to confirm that she was to be the candidate, or were in the room when she was told face-to-face, and you had already seen the speech written out. Is that the deal?
Or are you also a mind reader who can gleen such information from someone else's brain?
Just because politicians use speech writers doesn't mean the points made in the speech aren't the ones the person delivering it wanted to make.
Unless someone has first-hand knowledge of the sequence of events here, then they're talking out their a$$ about it.
Palin may have known she was to be the candidate a week, two weeks or more before we did. Any smoke blown by either campaign, or the press, about the decision on the VP and when and how it was made is best ignored.

Just to respond to Dan. I didn't expect Obama to swim. I live in France and saw on tv the sizeable plane which was blocking French news programs because it took Obama so long, something like a half an hour, before he finally emerged from his aircraft with the word CHANGE in big letters painted on it. It was flashy, it was expensive, HEAVILY electoral. Like the setting of his convention speech -- it was pretentious and over the top.
