Fear-Mongering and Fox

Various outlets are growing concerned with the anti-Obama anger that seems to have taken over McCain/Palin rallies of late. I'd like to point out that Fox News is doing far, far more to entice hatred and possibly violence than the McCain campaign is. If you take your cues from Fox News, you're likely to think America is under attack by a foreign terrorist agent who holds both a Islamic faith and a communist agenda. Further, you likely believe that this secret Stalinist Muslim will steal the election from god-fearing Americans through his connections to ACORN, the single sleaziest organization on the planet.

Yes, McCain and Palin have drifted into seriously shady territory by implying that Obama is an unamerican terrorist sympathizer. But Fox is way more explicit in its race-baiting and fear-mongering than the McCain campaign is.

As just a bit of evidence, see this Daily Show clip:

Thank God for The Daily Show and Air America who help to show just how ridiculous Fox news and the far Right are. It's fun to watch the right get so angry and make fools of themselves.

If there's one politician that does not have the right to complain about the attacks of subjective media, it's Obama.

Posted by: Kathy Giannini on 10/10/08 at 12:33 PM  Respond

Kathy: Really? Are we talking about the same Obama? The one who the media spent months portraying as out of touch with America over his bowling score, his taste for arugula and orange juice, and his 100% accurate "bitter" comments? Who was accused of flip-flopping on Iraq, the death penalty, and other issues when he had actually remained utterly consistent on all of them? Who had the media portray him for weeks on end as an angry radical because he attended church with Jeremiah Wright and was married to Michelle Obama? And who watched while McCain's own crazy radical friends (Pastor Hagee, Charles Keating, and many others), flip-flops and lies (see here), and utter disconnect from main-stream America (100 years in Iraq, just to name one thing) were all excused or out-right ignored by the media?

*That* Obama?

Or is there another Obama I don't know about who has been given a free pass by the media? If so, drop me a link so I can learn of this extraordinary person.

oddly enough, i don't feel especially bothered by this. fox has lost their bid to be taken seriously as a legitimate news outlet, and they've stopped trying to attract viewers that aren't already sold on their awful "news." absolutely nobody takes their "fair and balanced" slogan seriously any more and it's become a bad joke. let them continue their decline into limbaugh territory and further disgrace...

This is just another way for the racists left to try and force people to stop addressing obamas communist/black KKK agenda.

Everything we DO know about his says that obama is, at the very least, a 60's style leftist.

For some reason the MSM has decided that connecting obama to all his crap, is going to make people violent against him. I hate to tell you this, but he brought this upon himself with his past.

Half the country hates obama and has no problem telling him so.

During the next debate, he will be forced to address his past and his acorn, election stealing friends.

This will be a reverse-replay of 2000, but it will be the Republican Party who will be revealing all the shady voters who acorn tried to get involved. It might even come down to the Supreme Court having to throw out a million felons, and others who should NEVER have been allowed to vote in the first place.

They will again, put a Republican in office, and you will see the inner cities BURN... Funny thing is that the minorities will be burning their OWN neighborhoods... HAHAHAHA

Doesn't matter to us, we will volunteer to sit on the roofs of the Korean grocers and defend against the rampaging gangs...:-)

How unfortunate that folks are so afraid of a black man even still in 2008. So afraid that most of your ravings are non sensical.
Black KKK's? Blacks aren't allowed to be KKK members.
Voter supression is a good thing? How, if you call yourself a democratic society?
Obama is Godless? After all the flack he took for being a Christian?
A nation created for Religion? Religous people who practiced hate instead of love and exterminated the native peoples who had welcomed them here or the religious people who decided that people who spoke a different language and had darker skin were automatically inferior and worthy of enslavement, abuse and death?

Please people...If nothing else be honest about what it is about Mr. Obama or Mr. McCain that really concerns you?
One is old, one is young.
One is white, one is black.
One is a hotdog maverick, one is a cautious thinker.
One studied little and partied hard, one partied little and studied hard.
One served his country in armed combat, one served his country in community service and education.
One chose a PYT with a mean streak, one chose an older, scholar with a tendency to put his foot in his mouth.

Stop this nonsense. Look at the issues and decide on what your personal issues are and compare the candidates on that since you will not agree with either candidate fully.
Don't continue to dishonor our nation by being superficial and shallow in how you decide on the next leader of the world. They ALL have some distasteful personality traits and some questionable histories and associations. None of us made it to adulthood without both. But it's funny how we expect these people to be perfect.
Neither one is the messiah either. Neither is going to wave his arms and part the seas or lead us to the promised land because he's got a direct line to the man upstairs. We got work to do and we will have to work together to undo what has been done and get ourselves back on track.
So we can't afford to make these petty issues the deciding factor for choosing the next president.
We've had 8 years with a guy who didn't study too hard but was the life of a party. He led us into two foreign wars, didn't get the people that hurt our citizens, put us in hock for at least a generation to people we supposedly don't like and gave the bankers the keys to the vault which they have summarily looted.
Can't we do better for ourselves?

Posted by: NYNY on 10/11/08 at 9:34 AM  Respond

@NYNY, its funny that you seem to think that reason will reach these people, but we really need to remember that the only ones who have been listening to reason throughout the last decade or so are the real, true to life moderates and not the frothing loyalists on the edges of either party. If they refuse to move on and do what we need to have done for the nation's survival, then they need to be left behind and forgotten.

it certainly bothers me that fox does this. they may not have "real" credibility as "news" to motherjones readers, but there is a large portion of the country that watches fox and only fox. it thus remains a powerful tool for shaping perceptions and a formidable force in this election, for better, or (in reality) for worse.

What legally constitutes being a terrorist or what is an act of terrorism? For example when Fox makes accusations concerning Obama that they cannot back up in a courtroom (because when they accuse him of being a terrorist they are basically saying he is an enemy of the US and ought to beheld as a prisoner of war) should we say that their accusations constitute terrorism and shouldn’t we investigate them because they are acting in the exact same manner as Ibn Laden?

If Sarah Palin’s accusations or John McCain’s accusations actually lead to an outbreak of violence or a life threatening attack on Senator Obama and the guilty party give as grounds for their actions as being the statements made by McCain and Palin and Fox, shouldn’t Palin and McCain and Fox be charged with terrorism—in this case we would be talking of something more than just terrorism because it constitutes treason? As long as terrorism is not defined in a legal sense then accusing someone of being a terrorist is also “terrorism” (If we call an individual a murderer and they are not then we are committing a crime) and when the people making these terrorist accusations are people who are competing for the highest position of government then what does this say about how these people would abuse the power of the presidency once they are in power? Would you trust the back stabbing Palin, given her abuse of power in Alaska, with the power of the presidency?

The Bush administration is already guilty of abusing the position of government to such an extent that they have held and detained political opposition representatives of this nation as “terrorists” that go all the way to the top of the democratic party—like placing Ted Kennedy on the terrorist watch list and when this is the form of abuse, where “terrorism” and “terrorist” are used as a means to conduct a political purge then I think the US has not been closer to a state of civil war since 1860. At this particular moment you would expect that Republicans would show a certain face of humility—because no force in the universe has been more destructive to the security of the US than the incompetent Bush administration—they represent the very meaning and symbol of total failure; One would have expected that these neoconservative morons would back down or that they would apologize for having led the nation down the path of self destruction but when they fail to do this, then one’s hand is being forced to deal with these people as though they too are terrorists. That means that the actions of Fox News and the actions of Sarah Palin and John McCain can easily be construed as terrorist acts and need to be dealt with as though they are terrorists because they divide the nation and represent a form of “leadership” that can be shown to directly undermine the well being of the nation (their actions constitute a threat to the security of the nation).

I suspect we will witness in the US a counter purge and a need to deal with the events of the last 8 years in a legal fashion that will make the use of terrorism as a means to undermine democracy and the constitution more difficult. Thus if McCain and Palin wish to use the terrorist card they ought to be made aware of the fact that the very act of using this card can implicate them as well but in a far more serious fashion—because their false accusations can be shown to serve the terrorist cause and thereby constitute acts of treason since they aid and abed a sworn enemy of the US—we are at war with “terrorism”, “terror” and “terrorists” and since no institution of the American government holds Barack Hussein Obama under suspicion of being an enemy of the US claiming that he is constitutes a crime against the nation (because Obama is competing for the highest position of authority in the US) and either FOX, Palin and McCain will refrain in their accusations (this would demand a public apology) or else they will be dealt with as traitors!

Amen to you shade tail, gk, and others. For looking in the future, and not the past. It probably was a tell-tale sign of things to come at the rally in Wisconsin when McCain took a qestion from the woman that said "OBAMA IS AN ARAB" and he had to defend that. When you fan the flames of division and hatred (race-bating) you get this kind of ignorance when people aren't informed. Barack Obama has been on the campaign trail for over 19 months, Sarah Palin, 6 weeks. She's not vetted enough and she's doing it on the fly. The whole idea of an election is to getto know the candidates, like them or not, i've been watching elections since reagan (1st term) and he's not vetted, he should've picked Romney, huckabee, or any of the wome who are far more qualified.

Why was Sarah Palin addressing a group that wishes Alaska to break-away from the USA? Does she endorse this ?.Is that an act of treason ?.Why was John McCain photographed warmly greeting the former Vietnamese commander who personally murdered and tortured US POWs during the Vietnam War ?. When you start throwing stones it wil never stop-especially when it's as desperate as bringing up an incident when Obama was 8 years old. It's the policies you should consider. I can understand Obama's as he enunciates clearly what he will do-McCain and Palin talk in abstracts-it's difficult to know what they will do. They merely say "something must be done" in a dozen different ways. POLICY is where it's at and what you should be considering. Enough of the mud slinging.

When all the wingnuts like Barry Nigh start bleating about "voter fraud" and ACORN and blah blah blah (a charge that gets dredged up every two years, analyzed thoroughly, and thoroughly debunked), it pays to remember what's really behind all of this.

Here's Paul Weyrich, Racine County Young Republican 1961-63, a founder of the Heritage Foundation with funding from beer empire head Joseph Coors, coiner of the phrase "Moral Majority" (a greater misnomer was possibly never coined), a Christofascist activist and otherwise founder of the current rightwingnut movement, speaking before a Christofascist preacher training session in 1980:

"Now many of our Christians have what I call the goo-goo syndrome -- good government. They want everybody to vote. I don't want everybody to vote. Elections are not won by a majority of people, they never have been from the beginning of our country and they are not now. As a matter of fact, our leverage in the elections quite candidly goes up as the voting populace goes down."

Weyrich, Barry Nigh and the rest of the wingers realize a very simple truth: When people vote, they lose. And that's why they don't want people to vote. As Weyrich quite candidly admitted, 28 years ago. And they haven't stopped trying to suppress the vote ever since.

This time, it ain't gonna work. Not this time.
