Will Ken Starr Defend Prop 8 in CA Supreme Court?

ken%20starr.jpgOverheard last week in DC at a right-wing legal convention: "We've all but confirmed that Ken Starr is going to take the case."--Jordan Lorence, senior counsel, Alliance Defense Fund.

The involvement of the former Clinton special prosecutor in efforts to preserve California's new ban on gay marriage really wouldn't come as much of a surprise. Two years ago, Starr, now dean of the Pepperdine law school, represented a bunch of anti-gay marriage groups, including the Mormon Church, in amicus briefs in some of California's gay marriage litigation. He's been involved in the issue for a while, now. Given the intense interest in other people's sex lives that Starr demonstrated during his investigation of the Lewinsky scandal, he seems a perfect fit for the job.

Of course, when I asked him at the Federalist Society conference to confirm the gossip, he said with a laugh, "No comment." Later, I asked Lorence whether he had indeed confirmed Starr as counsel. Looking a bit shocked that he'd been caught blabbing out of school, he pleaded ignorance, suggesting that he had no intelligence on the matter whatsoever, despite his earlier boasts to a Harvard law student about his inside line to Starr. He did confirm that he would not be doing the arguing himself, nor would another lawyer from the alliance who has argued such cases before. I take all this to mean that Starr is likely to take the case.

We sure are wasting a lot of time and money on this issue-Why not make it a National Referendum and a Constitutional Amendment-bring it to a vote so to speak!

Bringing minority rights to the popular vote is absolutely against the equal protection guaranteed in the constitution--so to speak.

Tony, unfortunately, Homosexuals are dead enders from a Darwinian standpoint. Sorry, get over it. All societies in the past knew this. The fact that we are even having this discussion shows how stupid people have become.

Seems the dead enders will be all of us due to heterosexuals overpopulating the planet.

so the 14th amendment doesn't apply to "dead enders"?

and trying to reduce homosexuals to self-reproduction doesn't speak well to PD's intelligence.
or perhaps they also advocate requiring by law that married people procreate and refuse the rights and responsibilities of marriage to people who can't.

You are right Troy. It is the law of nature. From a scientist viewpoint. I know that PETA thinks that we should be able to marry our companion creatures(they refer to our pets as "companions" on the same level as humans.) Here again my objections are the same. Dead enders all.

This is the way to solve the problem. LAGOS (AFP) – The Dalai Lama, the exiled Tibetan spiritual and temporal leader, on Friday said sex spelt fleeting satisfaction and trouble later, while chastity offered a better life and "more freedom."

"Sexual pressure, sexual desire, actually I think is short period satisfaction and often, that leads to more complication," the Dalai Lama told reporters in a Lagos hotel, speaking in English without a translator.

He said conjugal life caused "too much ups and downs.

"Naturally as a human being ... some kind of desire for sex comes, but then you use human intelligence to make comprehension that those couples always full of trouble. And in some cases there is suicide, murder cases," the Dalai Lama said.

He said the "consolation" in celibacy is that although "we miss something, but at the same time, compare whole life, it's better, more independence, more freedom."
