Inside the psychiatric hospitals the world forgot.
Working closely with Mental Disability Rights International, noted photojournalist Eugene Richards spent years documenting conditions in pyschiatric hospitals around the world. This photo essay is an excerpt of his book, A Procession of Them (University of Texas Press, 2008)

Mental Disability Rights International has done ground-breaking work all over the world. Mother, you should have given us their URL:

to get the stories behind the photos. Without context, these photos are prurient, a sad pornography of suffering — call it "painography" — not because of the nudity, but because you haven't given the reader a way to act on what they're seeing. A link to the website would have done that.
As a person with a disability, I am grateful that you published the photos, but without a frame for information and activism, they're a sterile exercise in pity, and that's not helpful.

What makes anyone think it's better in America? Treatment of the so called mentally ill is still barbaric.

Your photo essay is so powerful, I am glad that you have posted a link to activism, I am inspired to help in some way. I am always appalled by how much clothing goes to waste in my town and wonder if there is someway to make a connection, I will contact those that might help. Thank you for your work.

I have always agreed with RD Laing that those humans accounted mad have often suffered a break-through rather than a breakdown.
Like cats and dogs that hear the distant sirens that we cannot yet hear; like mutated frogs that register environmental disasters long before our material awareness; many of those accounted mad are sensitive, vulnerable humans who are absorbing the pain of living in an increasingly unlivable world.
They walk point for the rest of us, and we must not ignore them.
This is sad
These people are people. Often these people were previously like us, stumbling on tough times in one way or another. Looking through these photos is freaky. If you have a loved one or friend (like I did last summer), pray for them - consistently. They will get out, just like my friend did (completely normal now). Peace.
