Town Halls and the Resurgence of the Radical Right
How the GOP is fueling extremist paranoia.
Across the nation this summer, unknown numbers of people are hunkering down and arming up for what they believe is an imminent battle for the soul of America. Town halls and tea parties provide just a small glimpse of the rage, fear, and paranoia fomenting on front porches and in Internet chat rooms, in the conservative heartland and beyond. While the details may vary, the visions in such forums share a common theme: In one way or another, a fight to the death is coming, and coming soon.
These deep-seated fears explain at least some of the vitriol, the violent scuffles, and death threats bubbling up in town hall protests against health care reform. It's all too easy for certain right-wing activists to accept that the president's plan will create death panels or mandate taxpayer-funded abortions. Because some of these people don't just believe that Obama wants to destroy capitalism and kill their granny and their unborn child—they believe he wants to kill them, too.
At a town hall meeting with Democratic Senator Ben Cardin in Hagerstown, Maryland, on August 12, one attendee carried a sign that read "Death to Obama," and "Death to Michelle and her two stupid kids." Another sign at the same event compared Obama to Hitler. At least some of the Obama-Hitler iconography originates from followers of perennial whack-job Lyndon LaRouche, but the comparison has been disseminated by Rush Limbaugh to a wider audience of hardline conservatives.
That’s not the only insidious comparison making the rounds: One protester who attended a raucous town hall with Pennsylvania Senator Arlen Specter told a Village Voice reporter that Obama was a "21st-century Marxist" who would adopt the same methods Hugo Chavez used to take power in Venezuela: "infiltration of the education system, political correctness, class warfare ideology, voter fraud, brainwashing through the mainstream media."
As the town halls have become more heated, the hints of violence have become increasingly overt. One man showed up outside the president's town hall meeting in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, with a hand gun strapped to his thigh; on August 17, another brought an assault rifle to a demonstration at the site of Obama's speech to veterans in Phoenix. It emerged that the latter's presence at the meeting had been coordinated with a former member of the Viper Militia, whose adherents were convicted of weapons and conspiracy charges in the 1990s and were accused of plotting to blow up federal buildings.
Clearly, this is about far more than health care policy. Instead, it's just one sign out of many heralding a resurgence of the extreme right wing. It's been widely reported that extremist groups are growing, in numbers and membership, since Obama launched his presidential campaign. As in the past, some of the ideas espoused by these groups are working their way further toward the political core with the help of right-wing politicians and media figures.
For instance, take Rep. Michele Bachmann's (R-Minn.) claim that expanding AmeriCorps would result in liberal "re-education camps." This statement has now morphed into rumors that the young community service volunteers are being armed to take over the country—possibly with some help from the New Black Panther Party.
Similarly, Dick Armey, the former House majority leader and lobbyist for the pharmaceutical industry, is predicting an October surprise from Obama in the form of "a hyped-up outbreak of the swine flu, which they'll say is as bad as the bubonic plague to scare the bed-wetters to vote for health care reform."
The assertion may sound ludicrous, but it dovetails nicely with a view among conspiracy theorists that a sweeping and deadly plot lurks behind the swine flu pandemic. Influenced by the work of a whacked-out Austrian "journalist" named Jane Bürgermeister, some on the far right believe the virus was manufactured by the World Health Organization, the United Nations, and the rest of the black helicopter crowd's usual suspects, as "part of a long-term plan by the syndicate, who have built large numbers of FEMA concentration camps with incinerators and prepared mass graves in states such as Indiana and in New York to quarantine people and dispose of the bodies of the people who are killed by the bioweapons attack." This "depopulation" scheme has in turn been linked by conspiracy theorists to the Obama administration's plans for a "global planetary regime to enforce forced abortion" and sterilizing the population through the water supply.
Among liberals, the dominant take on all of this seems to be ridicule and derision, or else impotent hand-wringing about the demise of "civil discourse." It's as if they'd forgotten that many of these so-called loonies just happen to own guns—and while liberals go on chattering, these folks are stocking up on ammunition. And right-wing radicals have an advantage when it comes to ideological fervor. Obama and the Democrats in Congress quickly frittered away any populist energy that might have come out of the recession, the fiasco of the Bush years, or the 2008 election. All that's left are the compromises on top of compromises that they call policymaking, for which no one can muster much enthusiasm. Right-wing zealots, on the other hand, think they are fighting for their lives by standing fast against communism, or the anti-Christ, or both; they're not only doing God's work, but also fulfilling their destiny as true American patriots.
Indeed, the right-wing revival is infused with the words and imagery of the American Revolution. The gun-toting protestor at Obama's New Hampshire health care town hall was also carrying a sign that read, "It Is Time To Water The Tree Of Liberty"—a clear reference to a quote from Thomas Jefferson that the "tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants." (Because he had a permit and wasn't in shooting range of the tyrant, the patriot was allowed to keep his gun.) On a website also called The Tree of Liberty, members exchange Obama insults and apocalyptic visions in a forum called Committees of Correspondence, named for assemblies in colonial America that protested tyrannical British policies.

Please help us keep the sick and disabled safe from the lunatic fringe:
Meaninful Healthcare Reform, a coalition of healthcare providers, peace and justice advocates, union members and reps, and individuals who are sick and/or disabled, hands out and posts the following at town hall meetings and other healthcare reform gatherings:
WARNING (Constructive Notice) To: All Present at.... Date:
Included in today's ________________________, are numerous sick and disabled individuals. These individuals, some of whom are in fragile condition, have the right to contact and communicate with their elected representatives without being harassed, intimidated, threatened, etc.
You are hereby noticed that any or all actions that harass, intimidate, threaten or are combative with aforementioned individuals, thereby causing harm or injury to them or their care providers, shall result in criminal complaints and/or civil actions being brought against any person(s) or group(s) causing such harm or injury.
Hmm, do you have proof the
Hmm, do you have proof the GOP is fueling/funding or otherwise even participating in this because I don't and I am a community organizer of tea parties.
Otherwise, your little blog is merely spewing left wing talking points you heard on TV... TV that took miles of video of a well behaved crowd that has nothing to do with violence or threatening violence...
We are not the 'radical right' we are just people who know what the constitution says and don't want to be taxed to pay for health care for illegal aliens, or be forced to have gov't MISmanage our current excellent health programs. Face it the insurance companies are in bed with Obama.
Chris Broughton had nothing whatsoever to do with anyone who blew up anything and your statements to that effect are libelous.
Worse yet, to suggest the fellow in Portsmouth was dangerous in any way is also libelous.... Why not tell the truth being that he was ATTACKED by two Obama paid thugs and who then spat into the camera his friend was using?
I can't imagine that anyone who was supposedly threatening violence would show that kind of restraint with his piece... which was there because many of carry openly in NH as a matter of daily routine. This day was no different.
Why has no one decried the Obama thug violence of the left? Another incident had two SEUI thugs beating up a black man...
I agree with the above statement. The sick and disabled need to be protected from the 'lunatic fringe' and the lunatic fringe is in Washington DC under the name of Barack Hussein Obama and his utopian czars who believe in a managed society ala George Soros, someone who aided and abetted the nazis to take property away from fellow jews as they were herded to the ovens.
.
The lunatic fringe PAY their people to attack and disrupt.

We will not allow them to decide who lives or dies....I can see it now--- follow the party line or your line is pulled!
Watch the video.. You may want to rewrite your blog piece, Bill K in Portsmouth was a hero and a stellar American. Had that thug done that to me, he would be missing his teeth -- (and I'm an old woman!)
You people that supposedly
You people that supposedly believe in the constitution so much,
I would like to know where you have been for the last 8 YEARS.??
No where the hell have they
No where the hell have they been the last 8yrs blind. All this didn't just start Jan 20 2009. The country and constitution was already failing before Barack Obama.
where have we been?
We were protesting George Bush just as strongly. You just didn't realize we weren't liberals because you confuse Republicans with Conservatives. We voted for Ron Paul, not a Democrat. We saw Bush's policies like wire tapping illegally as destructive to liberty. We hated the Patriot Act. I notice that The One has done nothing to repeal either. The simple fact is Obama has kept the policies that we found odious because he has no problem with the extra power, just a problem with truth and honor. He has quadrupled the debt that Bush left after 8 years and he's done it after only being in office less than a year. He complains that he cannot fulfill campaign promises because of the Bush legacy. He was a Senator at the time. He made those promises while fully aware of the Bush legacy, knowing his promises were only pipe dreams sold to gain power. He just now finds it convenient to break his promises and scapegoat Bush. His solutions for problems will kill the country as they burden us in chains of huge debt and tyranical government. We have been here. We hated W for smaller versions of the same reasons we hate Obama. You just weren't paying attention because you thought the enemy of your enemy was your friend. We are not. And we are fed up.
Bitching, moaning, and
Bitching, moaning, and ranting...the same as I am doing now! Why? Because I'm not on the lunatic fringe of left or right! I AM AN INDEPENDENT! I have the ability to reason, unlike the people who make ad hominem attacks on people who dare to disagree with the current President!
What exactly does that video prove?
So one guy spits at another guy. How exactly does that prove one of them is a paid union thug?
Regarding libel: the absolute defense against accusations of libel is truth. If the author's comments are libelous let the offended make their case.
Right dude, and watch out
Right dude, and watch out for those "death panels". You would rather have insurance accountants determine what kind of treatment you receive so that shareholders can have a piece of your premiums. Not a GOP'er huh? Then why do you hate so much a man who is trying to better this country and its people? i've seen the town hall videos and the tea party videos. You all have about zero credibility, except maybe amongst yourselves. You are just the lunatic fringe my friend, in the flesh, on TV every night.
riiight
An old woman? More like a pathetic teenager in his parents' basement, peddling lies about our country. There's nothing patriotic or good in kissing the GOP's secessionist ass, while depriving Americans of healthcare. As for your tough talk - you don't even dare post your own name, you sad piece of treasonous trash.

Gop is a major joke
who's NOT being paid these days?
Simply because your little tea parties are being funded by an ubiquitous and sinister parent organization a la Bond novels doesn't mean the money isn't flowing freely. Most major news outlets (go ahead, tell me how they're all in liberal's pockets...) have disclosed information on scores of people who've been inciting these meaningless spewings of hateful tripe--all of them paid by one or another conservative thinktank or citizen's group. It's not a darkened basement deal to fund these things, it's done under the harmless-sounding names of activist groups so it's largely unnoticed. You might be interested to note that the health sector--including pharmaceuticals and insurers--gave nearly identical sums to Democrats and Republicans in the last elections. Surprised? They know where their bread is buttered, and whoever ends up on top they can't afford to not have greased the wheels a little.
You groan about talking points, so explain to me exactly who's talking about legislating health care for illegal immigrants. Furthermore, tell me about all the excellent health care programs that are out there for millions of poor people who have plenty of disposable income to throw around. The point of healthcare reform is that we are paying increasingly exorbitant sums for healthcare that is often redundant, unnecessary, and doesn't give the greatest health outcomes.
Does someone want to stir up civil unrest?
You know that there is quiet work occurring now to create a North American Union (now called SPP) -- http://bit.ly/o4smF (also, Obama met with leaders from Canada and Mexico just a couple weeks ago).
So what if we're now seeing the result of efforts to create civil unrest, which if it gets bad enough, will be followed by a declaration of martial law. Under martial law, our Gov. operates outside the bounds of our Constitution (no such thing in the Constitution), so that work on a NAU can proceed rapidly. Presto, when martial law ends, we'll be combined with Canada and Mexico! And our gov. had to do it cause the nations needed each others help (incl. military) so much during the national emergency/civil unrest. We lose our national sovereignty and all the while everyone doesn't see it cause they are so angry over the financial collapse, health care reform and (coming soon) mandatory Swine flu vaccinations (and possibly others to come).
Mental migets
The radical right and the right in general are all missing a few brain cells. Must be from all that in-breeding. It's hard to believe in this country with free education that they refuse to be educated. The ability to think for oneself is obviously lost on them.
Brain cells don’t define
Brain cells don’t define your comment; you show no proof of your intelligence prior to lambasting others. This is the exact reason to stay away from the left. They can't put an argument together with insults and innuendo!
How you tell when politician
How you tell when politician lie?
Comrade Pelosi blink
Slick Willy rub nose
Comrade Obama open mouth
Dumb Donkey Gibbs laugh...Hehaw..he..haw..he..haw!
Is this really health care "reform"?
Compare Obama Care vs Igor Care at Obama vs Igor Care
I Igor produce Barrack Milhaus Hussein Obama Birth Certificate at www.igormarxo.org
Poor Igor
Its okay Igor, you can go back to your cell now and take a nap.
Hey 40-year-old-virign
Go back Sarah Palin's FB page and masturbate. Or get a job and stop leaching off your mama.
Education?
I'll just submit that education in this country is hardly free. Most people don't tend to think of taxes for what they are: payment for services rendered. I don't like them any more than the next guy, but I took full advantage of the education my parents and grandparents paid for, and am willing (if somewhat begrudgingly) to do my part to keep paying for what the government really ought to be doing for us.
Political protest
I'm just wondering why it is "freedom's fresh air" when liberals protest Bush's war in Iraq, but it is something evil and contrived when concerned citizens, looking for answers to their health care concerns, get ticked off at pols who won't give them a straight answer at a Town Hall meeting? Where's the equality in political expression? Does Mr. Ridgeway have his nose out of joint because his political side and the Democrat President is catching a little bit of a voters' protest? What two-faced little babies! The Democrats and Progressives yell and whine when they aren't in power and when they get in power they expect everyone to sit-down and shut-up like little Marxist peons. Americans are daily wrestling with their politicians about every issue. It's the right of every political pursuasion to speak up at any time. That's what makes this country so much better than the Third World. Speak up and say your piece about every issue! Don't let anyone on the Right or the Left tell you to shut-up and sit-down!
What interests me the most
What interests me the most about the Right Wing lunatic fringe is not the fringe themselves but the people who call themselves "peaceful" conservatives— who believe that they are being targeted by the federal government in Homeland Security reports regarding domestic terrorist warnings—thereby downplaying the reality of domestic terrorism. These "peaceful" people actively spread disinformation, oftentimes knowing full well that the information is false or misleading. They decide that making comments reviling liberals and leftists in a blog written about the violent reality of the Right Wing lunatic fringe makes any sense. Do you see? There is enough similarity of ideology between extremists and "peaceful" conservatives that loyalty trumps reason or context. That is why we do not hear a prominent ongoing discussion from conservative circles denouncing the violent tactics of the Right Wing. That is why we do not hear them describing their own policy alternatives at length or emphasizing their "peaceful" messages... The Right Wing provides them with an opportunity and a momentum; at the very least a tactic- which they will use at all costs. Top GOP officials ENCOURAGE and PROMOTE this momentum even in light of the numerous death threats against our President and members of Congress. In light of Timothy McVeigh, Richard Poplawski, Dannie Baker, James Adkisson, James W. von Brunn, numerous militia member arrests, etc. It's only a matter if time before the next strike. Are there conservatives standing up against the violence of the fringe? Of course there are... but most have to make the choice, "you're either with us or against us." Silence=complicity.
OBAMACARE
EXCUUUUSE ME...anyone who would put their health care in the hands of the Federal Gov't. is nuts. But not everybody is fooled...not only is it going to be super expensive...it'll be substandard. One need look no faryther than the countries who have tried it. The liberals ? Fughetaboutit ! Too much reefer...too soon in life. I bet Bobby, Phil, & Mickey are second guessing their decision to push Obama. Talk about a lapse in judgement ! But, it's too late, now ! Hang on...because it's gonna be a great ride !
O-BUMMER...
I bet Bobby, Phil, & Mickey are scratching their heads over why they pushed Obama on their fans. And by extension, ruined the country.
" The Radical He Rant & Rage. Singin' Someone's Got To Turn The Page ! " Yeah...but who knew Obama would turn out to be such a radical commie nut-job ? Sure they're superb musicians...but they're also burned out. Better they should stick with mind bending music. Leave the heavy lifting to someone with more brain cells. Shame on you, Phil. You should know better. Bobby...still, just a follower. Mickey, too. And if Jer were still alive...he NEVER would have let you guys use the band to push your opinion(s) on anyone. Pretty pathetic.
Blah blah blah
What an unbelievable load of hate-filled tripe in this article and also the post "radical right... are missing a few brain cells" "refuse to be educated".
Its amazing to me that all the elite masters had to do was to install the right color puppet and suddenly half the population (the ones calling themselves progressive) are willing to get solidly behind government control of just about anything and everything (auto industry, health care, internet...).
It's just another genius move on their part along the same lines as installing GW the born-again puppet to get the religious conservatives to back their illegal wars.
Last time the so-called left was the demon labeled unpatriotic for protesting the war. Now its the so-called right who are the demons for protesting the over-reaching government actions on health care. Psst the war's still going on even if now ignored by the so-called left, except for a very few people like Cindy Sheehan (no longer a darling of the left according to her blogs).
It's definitely not due to a lack of education, there is no shortage of college educated individuals on either the right or left so that's just an insult and not an explanation or excuse.
I don't claim to know what the answer is. Maybe its something in all the processed food that causes people to act in such belligerent and nasty ways.
Maybe its just that people (left, right, liberal, conservative whatever...) are easily herded into groups and whipped into a frenzy against anyone who is not part of their group.
I'm sorry but I don't see a lot of tolerance or understanding anywhere these days, but especially on these internet forums.
I'm Shocked By This Behavior
This behavior is out of hand. The other day, Barney Frank had a women spouting Hitler comparisons to the health care debate. This type of weak minded exchange is embarrassing and ridiculous. My hope is that the radicals will move away or get on board and help the American people with something productive.

Protests
Casual Observer,
There's a difference when there is actual proof that some of these far-right groups and individuals are on a payroll from a conservative think-tank or corporately-backed "interest group." It's the difference between being mad and vocal about abuses actually committed by the previous administration and spewing outright lies--lies admittedly fed to them by a larger organization with an axe to grind.
I won't squash anyone's right to speak up, though I do think it needs to be done more tactfully by BOTH sides. I can't abide, however, people who actively engage misinforming the public and perpetuating myths about an absolutely vital issue.
No difference
Budding Misanthrope - Are you trying to be inflammatory by using the term "far-right groups"? This is no different than using the term "Union thugs" to describe when union members try and influence their fellow believers.
I went to a town hall meeting with 700 people in our town and their were exactly three people who raised their voices, two old men and one old woman. One of the men was unintelligible and shut down by his wife, the other man's shouting included right-wing rhetoric and the woman's included left-wing rhetoric. The right-wing man's picture was on the front page the next day, the left-wing woman was not even mentioned, the third was probably ignored because no one could understand him. Makes me think that a lot of the hysteria is being whipped up to fit an agenda and to further divide an already divided nation.
Also, I think that labeling as "lies" the legitimate concerns about government over reaching their bounds is just thinly veiled "bullying" by those who disagree. Some of the people like government quite a bit more than others.
Why do so many people think that its good for the government to have so much influence and control just because they happen to like the current administration? Would you be so happy to have old GW's administration having control over your health care? I hope you are, because you can bet that the "other side" will be back in power in a few years. Then maybe the death panels that are just "lies" now will become a reality. The laws are written by lawyers and decided by judges (former lawyers). Many unintended consequences may result.
Avoiding Overkill
When you exclude the rabid right LaRouchians and religious right Palinites, what's left is mobilized resentment. And there's plenty reason to be resentful of both major political parties, even though the GOP clearly has the edge in recruiting fanatics. But long before hypermedia started promoting political hysteria, there were social entrepreneurs like Merchant of Fear http://www.publicgood.org/reports/merchant.htm Alan Gottlieb, who got his start in direct-mail fear-mongering as a member of Young Americans for Freedom forty years ago. Now days, hyperbole is the name of the game, and although there are some dangerous actors who need reining in by police, the vast majority of delinquent behavior can and should be constrained by community action. When that action is based on research and education, rather than on inflated government, media, or party propaganda, community safeguards can be maintained without resorting to overkill.
Elections have consequences
Bush won: 2000 and 2004. Two wars that have nothing to do with the security of the United States. As a liberal, I paid my taxes anyway to support this foolishness.
Obama wins: 2008. Healthcare changes. The government regulates it more carefully and introduces a public option. Righties need to pay their taxes to support reforms. Certainly they can demonstrate and complain. In the end, though, the people choose. It's called democracy. Live with it.
The major difference between
The major difference between liberals and conservatives is that liberals don't carry guns and talk about overthrowing the government through violent means. We don't form militias. We don't compare reforming health care to Hitler's Germany. (Which makes no sense no matter what planet you live on.) Granted, both sides can be rude, angry and hyperbolic. But we on the left tend to only be that way in response to declaring war on other countries, not domestic policy reform.
Overall, I think that we'd have a much different conversation if the GOP/conservatives were basing more of their arguments on reality, not a whole lot of paranoid lies and misrepresentations of what the dems are actually trying to do. One side is talking actual policy proposals, the other side is just saying things like "no! Universal health insurance is something Hitler would support! Obama is a marxist/socialist/communist! Keep the government out of my medicare!" In that regard I almost feel bad for people who believe all those lies, for some reason they don't know any better, aren't very interested in critical thinking or thinking for themselves. Not to mention that most of them don't seem to know much about WWII or Hitler's rise to power.
We need serious reform, our health care system is broken and most of us are willing to admit so--things need to change and we cannot afford to stay on the path we are on.
For the record, Mother Jones isn't a "blog," it's a 30-year old magazine named for Mary Harris Jones, a very famous labor organizer.
Signs o the Times
Well, yes. I got pretty scared of men aged over 55 in my calls around the country for the Obama Presidential campaign. One Floridian named him 666. After an intense exchange he ordered me to "Get outta my life!"--I wondered how many women and children had heard that.
recantation
Well, you're right that I--and everyone--should be careful about how we try to label those we are debating, and I didn't mean to offend. I don't think I used any insulting language in calling a conservative a conservative, but I guess that's just the world we live in, where liberal and conservative are curse words. It wasn't my intention to be inflammatory, but I also believe in calling things what they are--and point of fact is that most of this opposition is from people who sit well right-of-center.
However, in no way did I label "legitimate concerns" as lies. I labelled lies as lies. Obama is not a socialist, saying so would be a lie. What there *is* in the proposed legislation is support for expanded Medicare (already a social program) and cutting waste from it for efficiency's sake. There is nothing about death panels in the legislation, saying so would be a lie. What there *is* in the bill is voluntary end-of-life counseling, something which is of great importance for individual psychology and family concerns. You could make the argument that it's a voluntary form of watered-down euthanasia, in which case I would have my own concerns to raise. Unfortunately, no one from the opposition has been able to make such a coherent argument against it, instead they prefer to shout inanities and pretend that they might support a bill IF they get everything they want without ever planning on voting for it (pure speculation, I know).
re: recantation and town hall experiences
I realized I didn't put my name on my last post, so for clarity, "recantation" was mine.
Also, I was thinking about the divergent experiences of these town halls that are/are not being portrayed in the media. I think it's a safe bet to say that the media (liberal or no) loves a circus, so of course they're looking for the most extreme examples.
In my own experience, I attended two town hall meetings in my area. I'm 24 years old, a young non-profit professional about to return to grad school for another career. Both meetings were well attended (300+ each), but had vastly different tones. I like to be engaged in political discourse, and I went to take my turn at the mic. In the spirit of disclosure, I lean left in general. Go figure from my last posts. At any rate, I was concerned with the money proposed to be taken from Medicare, but was looking for clarity about how much of it will be coming back, in what form, and towards what end. An elderly lady, who had spoken vigorously about socialism a few questions before me, immediately began shouting about keeping government out of her Medicare--perhaps perceiving that as a young man I am more or less disconnected from the system--and general mayhem ensued, from both sides shouting; at her, past her, back at each other, everywhere. Since I had a microphone, I decided to use it. I waited for a lull and simply said firmly, "Ma'am, you've had your say, and now it's my turn. No one shouted at you when you had the floor."
And it worked. I was pretty respectful, but sincere and firm. I felt like the grand arbiter of disputes, finished my question--which sadly didn't get a great answer. Moral of the story: discourse can be heated, but civil; concerns legitimate and responses fair--but only if enough people are willing to take civility seriously and remember that we're all in the same boat.
Good call

This guy hit the nail on the head. Stand up to bullies! If you give them an inch, they'll take a mile.
Input from Canada
May I as a Canadian slip in a a bit of reality-based information in this incredible debate in your country about providing health care to all. I live close to the border and hear in the media criticisms of our health care system that are based on very inaccurate information.
My wife and I are in our 70’s and have had to meet a few serious medical challenges in the last 10 years, some of them life threatenning. In every single instance, we have been treated immediately and competently.
Let me give you an example of the quality of our services, taken from a current family situation. Last month, during a routine medical examination, an abdomidal tumour-like growth was found in our niece. Because of the complexity of the situation (she was 7 month pregnant), she was immediately (within hours) rushed by an ambulance helicopter to a medical clinic in another city which had the appropriate medical services to deal with the situation. The baby is now born, and our niece is receiving attentive treatment for her condition.
For every case of ‘delayed service’ reported in the American media about our medical system, there are thousands of instances of positive experiences like ours that go unreported
Canadians are not stupid or uninformed. If our system were so bad, why would it be political suicide for any elected representative to propose modifications to it? Even our current Conservative government would not dare threaten the system. (BTW, this government was elected by less than 40% of the popular vote. They got in because the 'good guys' vote is split between two left-of-centre parties)
Our system is not government RUN, as we often hear in US media, it is government FUNDED. It is privately run like yours, and, yes, we do choose our own doctors… And, per capita, our system costs less than half of what the American system costs, in spite of the fact that ALL citizens are protected against ALL medical problems (prexistent conditions included)
Does our system compare favourably to yours in all points ? I’m sure not. There has to be a small cost of ensuring that 100% of our fellow citizens are covered no matter what their wealth or employment status is. As Canadians, we find it joy in knowing that two little girls with an ear infection will receive the same quality of care irrespective of how rich daddy is.
But, eh, that's us.
If you are interested in more information about the Canadian system, read this article: http://www.denverpost.com/recommended/ci_12523427.
Best of luck to the millions of kind-hearted people in your country who understand that the pursuit of happiness must include the happiness of others.
Be prepared. I for one am
Be prepared. I for one am not standing in a line for anyones handout when the SHTF. Self sufficiancy scares the crap out of the government. That means that they have NO control over you. Raise your own food. Make your own power. It doesn't take much at all to accomplish this. In just 2 years I have gone from negative to positive. No car loans. No debt. Money in the bank. If you aren't prepared before October 2009, forget it. Too late. Good luck Libs. We Right Radicals warned you.
Self-sufficiency?
You and I apparently have very different definitions of the term.
"Raise your own food, make your own power" ...perform your own surgery? No, you have to pay for that. And if you don't meet the terms and conditions of the insurance company, or you can't come up with the cash to pay for coverage in the first place, well...in your phrase, the shit has hit the fan.
You can couch it in Jeffersonian "yeoman farmer" terms all you like (and why not frame the problems of a complex, urban and postmodern society through the alleged intent of a 19th-century plantation owner?), but the truth is that the self-sufficiency argument relegates healthcare to a caste privilege.
Now if you'll excuse me, I've got some food-raising and power-making to do in my 40-acre apartment.
Hey I For One Am
Hey I For One, what happens to the men and woman who two years ago started doing what you were doing but they live in Florida (hurricanes) or in Tennessee (tornadoes) or in California (earthquakes)? They have solar panels on their roofs, they have a small farm, they process their own feces and food waste to make fuel. But then a non-man-made form of SHTF happens to them through natural disaster. Are you positive these people won't be looking to the social safety net then? Or what if they, like you, exercise and eat right and have absolutely no medical issues for three, four, even five decades, but then they just get old and can not get around like they use to. What happens then?
My greatest shame is having been a Republican/Conservative
I grew up in one of the many GOP(Greedy Old Puritans)/Conservative areas of the US where you were either a Conservative/Republican or a Communist - nothing in between (and frankly I can't see there was much difference between the two by their actions and puritanical attitudes). So this article is nothing new and is very familiar to those of us who had the misfortune to have had our heads sealed shut at an early age. These people revel in ignorance and backwardness and intolerance.
I have a few things I regret in my life, but none so much as having been a Republican.
Too Comfortable
For too long, the conservatives have been too comfortable and too polite. "You just don't talk religion or politics". Play nice and don't rile up people was the way to get along. Certain conservatives have been trying to fuel the right to act but they couldn't get the majority to go against their culture.
But along comes Barack and Nancy. They have done what all the republican leaders couldn't do. They have woken up the sleeping giant.
The Media is Trying to Scare People
I have watched a number of town hall meetings on health care recently and have become aware that overall these meetings are under control and the majority in attendance support reform and the public option. What I see reported is a focus only on those attending who are radicals, giving the false impression that there is widespread opposition to reform, and even that it is dangerous to attend. Apparently the media is deliberately trying to scare people into not attending. I am not afraid!
Also, I support President Obama and believe this administration is making unprecedented effort to clean up the mess left by the Bush administration. I know that many people are grateful and ready to support health care reform and attend town hall meetings in our area.
A fight is coming............
Glen Beck is one of the biggest promoters of this sick philosophy there are many destructive people in this country right now who are generating this fear....
My question is what are THEY afraid of...........
Fear
What we are mostly afraid of is stupidity. Like a 7 to 9 trillion dollar debt, cuts to Medicare, rationed health care (and one I particularly like since I'm 68) determining whether I live or die based on some Dr. Emanuel formula. You probably should wake up and be a little afraid also (unless you are from ACORN).
Hypocrites!
Go ahead and complain but after 8 years of insulting Bush with the foulest mouths the left has to offer, your whining falls on deaf ears...Why don't you mention that the guy who was toting the assault rifle, the "Viper Militia" guy, was a BLACK man...isn't it interesting that MSNBC only showed him from the back...what are you guys trying to manipulate here? Now that the "Lyin' of the Senate" is dead, you think its "No rules"?
WE ARE WATCHING!
I submit to you
These so called right wing extremist who are stockpiling supplies are the same kind of people who founded this nation. They are using their knowledge and skills to preserve the seeds of America and after the smoke clears from this current assault on democracy by the Communist...the Anglo will be waiting to repair the damage and begin the long road back to excellence that has been taken from us by the liberal politicians. Liberals need to be afraid..very afraid. The millions are waking up!
Waking Up
Yeah, boo hoo. After 40-50 years of non-stop reparations to blacks, we are suddenly waking up and finding armed thugs at our polling places, a self important AG deciding to hound people that have saved our lives (and maybe his) and a president who won't even tell us his grades from Harvard or Columbia (among a few other unimportant little things). He is in all likelyhood a Muslim who took a bunch of radical courses (like "lets ruin whitey"), is either a bastard or lying about something about his birth.
Yeah, boo hoo for you. I'll admit conservatives are very slow to wake up and more and more PC, but I'm not, you moron.
I am convinced most
I am convinced most Americans are level headed and good people. You drag out from past history the worst in our nation and at the same time throw good citizens under the bus.
I feel you would love to see a Country where freedom of speech, past history and choice are totally elimanated from America.
You also give the notion that institutions like the Federal Reserve are somehow good for America and likewise the Trilateral Commission and their notions of foriegn policy.
Of course, you will probably label me racist too, simply for not agreeing with you.
WOW! Another article from a
WOW! Another article from a liberal fop selling truths about LIBERALS as indictments against conservatives. One big, incoherent, rambling lie it is, LIBERALLY seasoned with racist innuendo and accusations of inbreeding and mental deficiency; just what these hacks have been shilling for ages in the newspapers, on the nightly news, and in the public schools and universities since truthful debate will expose your political beliefs as tired old MARXISM. Case in point why the majority of daily papers are broke and used primarily for catching parakeet poop. I guess nobody told him that the KKK was founded by ex-Confederate Southern Democrats. Do you think he remembers Al Gore's daddy voting against the 1964 Civil Rights Act (or that 3 times as many DEMOCRATS voted against it than republicans), Robert Bird's white hood, or that our Dear Leader Barry has consistently surrounded himself with America hating radicals and stated his Marxist beliefs and disdain for America since, say...BIRTH (where ever that MAY have been... HAW!).
I get it. I really do. You absolutely cannot believe that with control of all three branches of gov't, ACORN running the census, the media, the universities and public schools, the fed, the automobile industry, and all the rest you filthy America haters have gotten your grubby statists hands on that you could still lose the battle to "re-make" America. You forgot the most important part of this coup attempt, that you must sell it to the citizens and now you are finding that THE AMERICAN PEOPLE don't want it and you hate us for it and show it at every turn. Oops. Bad move.
So, go on and change the name to "TeddyCare" and accuse the heartland of racism in a childlike, pant wetting fit. Continue to slander and deride us. We expect it from the effeminate Left. Defacating lies from your suck hole with every breath is what we expect from you. Standing fast for the Republic is what YOU should expect from us. How will we stand fast you may ask? Voting, voting, voting. What if you choose to use reconciliation and ram it down our throats? Can you say... "Second Amendment"? Patriots understand that country hating pukes cringe in fear at the mention of it. An armed citizenry makes for something to think about for slobs like you that lust after power. Just try and force us to live by any other political structure than what our forefathers gave us in the Constitution. I wonder how badly you turds want to find out why that amendment was included. It sure is entertaining to watch you mouth breathers huff and puff though. DELICIOUS!!!
