Igor Panarin's Doomsday Tea Party

One ex-KGB analyst has been warning for years that the US will collapse in 2010. Conservative activists think he may be on to something.

For more than a decade Dr. Igor Panarin, a Russian academic, has been predicting that sometime around 2010 the United States will collapse, splintering into separate states, some of them controlled by foreign powers. Outside of Russia, no one's put much stock in his crackpot and stereotype-based theories—until now, that is. Who are the newest members of the Igor Panarin fan club? Tea partiers who’ve rallied against the Obama administration's policies and blasted the president for pushing a "socialist" agenda. And he's especially big among tea party activists in Texas, who have hosted Panarin and promoted his work.

In Russia, Panarin, who hosts a weekly radio show, is considered a mainstream expert on the United States. Like Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, Panarin used to work for the KGB. He clearly has the support of the Kremlin, for he teaches at* the school that trains Russia's diplomats. And since the election of Barack Obama last November, Panarin has found a new audience in America among far right activists, many of whom believe Obama is destroying the country.

story continues below story continued from above

According to Panarin, the US will collapse within the next year because of its economic problems and deep racial and ethnic divisions. He changes the details from year to year, but here's the general gist: the South, "with its Hispanics," Panarin says, will break away from the union and merge or ally with Mexico. The rest of America will split into several other countries, some becoming the protectorates of other major powers. Alaska, naturally, will go to Russia. The Chinese will take over the West Coast. (Why? Panarin points out that most Californians' laptops are made in China and that the West has a "growing Chinese population.") "Five of the poorer central states, with their large Native American populations, and the northern states, where the influence from Canada is strong," will compose two other countries, he explained in Moscow last year. The Northeast, he says, will fall under the sway of "global capital and finance" based in London—an idea, no doubt, that appeals to those tea partiers who worry about nefarious international forces exerting influence over the US economy.

Since the Drudge Report first highlighted his theories last November, several conservative websites and blogs have featured him. In September, Chuck Baldwin, a perennial far-right presidential candidate on the Constitution Party ticket, observed that Panarin's predictions of "some sort of break up of the United States in the near future" was a "very realistic probability." (Columnist and MSNBC analyst Pat Buchanan linked to Baldwin's article on Panarin.) Joseph Farah, the founder of the arch-conservative website WorldNetDaily, which is famous for promoting "birther" allegations questioning Obama's citizenship, wrote in December that he wasn't "buying into Panarin's entire prediction" but that "there's something to it." More than half of the nearly 3,000 WND readers who responded to a poll attached to Farah's piece agreed that "the US is on course to break up soon, and another 18 percent said they thought the United States wouldn't break up, but would 'continue to lose sovereignty to the UN and other global entities.'"

This week Panarin made a trip to the United States. Tea party activists were waiting. On Monday night, the Houston Tea Party Patriots sponsored a speech by Panarin at a local Hilton. The event was titled "Global Crisis: Can the United States Remain United?" Panarin's hosts, according to a flier promoting the event, want to "make sure" Panarin's scenario "never happens." But they weren't sure it wouldn't come to pass. In a blog post promoting the event, these tea party activists noted that Panarin's prediction has been dismissed as a "radical impossibility. But is it?"

Texas was an appropriate place for Panarin to visit. He has said that he views Republican Gov. Rick Perry's talk of secession, Chuck Norris' offer to run for president of Texas, and the country's political battles over immigration as evidence for his thesis. And it certainly doesn't hurt Panarin's appeal to the far right that he is deeply critical of President Obama, whom he has compared to Mikhail Gorbachev. Obama, he says, "likes to talk but hasn’t really managed to do anything." Panarin also talks about America's "moral" collapse—a theme popular among social conservatives.

After his lecture in Texas, Panarin traveled to Washington, DC, on Tuesday to debate his America-is-doomed theory at the city's Russian Cultural Center. He gave his usual spiel—that the US is on the verge of breakup—without producing much in the way of evidence or argument. In the audience were a group of conservative activists who dominated the question-and-answer period. One of them, Bob Hoy, a tea party organizer from Northern Virginia, echoed Panarin's prediction of racial strife, but differed with the Russian on the timeline for America's impending disintegration. He thought it would be a matter of decades, not months. Hoy said that by 2065, "100 years after Ted Kennedy changed the immigration laws," America would be no more, due to an invasion of immigrants. Hoy warned that America, "founded by Europeans," was under siege. "No one wants to live in an integrated neighborhood," he added, arguing that white people flee "black" areas as soon as they can.

When Panarin polled the audience on whether they agreed with his theory, about 10 of the 50 or so people present raised their hands. With the tea partiers embracing Panarin, he can rest assured that if he falls out of favor in Russia, he'll have a receptive audience in America—that is, if America still exists.

*Corrected to reflect the fact that Panarin is a professor at the Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia. He doesn't run it.

Gawd! How little faith

Gawd! How little faith these people have in the greatest, best ever country on the earth ever to exist ever on the face of God's earth, or however Hannity puts it.

The southerners on the whole are truly uneducated

I am afraid this wing nut russki is somewhat on the right track, he has read the South pretty accurately. It is scary but true, the Southerners have a lot of bad energy and are quite capable of causing big trouble, but in the end they will be slaves to the North, shamed and dishonored, forced to live in an interracial society. After all we are of the same roots and nature is forcing us to re-integrate due to lack of space and resources, it will take some time but is inevitable in the end.

The KGB Teabagger

Thanks for bringing this to light. But... why do you keep calling these people "conservatives?" They are radical corporatists, there's nothing conservative about them. They are tools looking to overthrow our elected constitutional government and replace it with a corporate dictatorship, similar to "communist" China.

If they truly were conservative they would be screaming and yelling about the Bill of Rights. They would be working to conserve and protect the gains made by the American Revolution. Call them anything you want, but don't dignify them with their doublespeak name for themselves.

no profile pic for comment author

Which side are they on ...

Isn't it odd that the Party who accuses Obama and Democrats of pushing socialist agendas on to the public are embracing a Socialist and his theory of the collapse of the US. They're arguing against the very same arguement they embrace. That's insanity! Too bad the MSM doesn't hire people who are capable of figuring this out and reporting it.

So, in Panarin's scenario, who gets to keep the bombs? Chuck Norris?

Why the heck would Chuck

Why the heck would Chuck Norris need the bombs? He's Chuck Norris!!!

Can't we all get along

This is a case of folks not being able to deal with other people as equals, thus feeling unable to feel superior to them. The planet is a lot smaller than it used to be, and folks had better get used to it, or find themselves on the endangered list.

Cascadia might not be far off !

There's been a small grassroots movement here in the NW for years for Wa. Ore., Ida.,No.Cal. and B.C. to form the Republic Of Cascadia...Oh and btw with us (Wa.) comes The Bangor Trident Base, making us 1 of the nuke super powers...

no profile pic for comment author

RE: Cascadia might not be far off

The scenario is unlikely in the extreme, but if there were a breakup, then the northern tier of states, Montana, N. Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Northern New York, Vermont, Maine and New Hampshire, would probably join some sort of alliance with Canada. They have a lot in common with us and we with them.

Look at the pairings, Cascadia, Alberta/Montana/N.Dakota, Manitoba and Ontario/Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Ohio, New York, then the East - Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachussets? allied with the Maritime Provinces, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, PEI and Newfoundland.

I think that not only would the US break up, but so would Canada. Ouch!

We can only hope!

Hopefully this does happen! I live in Cascadia and have been dreaming of being free from the corrupt corporate government of the USA. The "corporatists" from the comment above are already in power, Republicrats are the problem, neither their "liberal" or "conservative" arms really want to change anything, in any way, they just want to look like they do.
Break free of these bonds and stop recognizing these absurd parties!

As a Canadian I can tell you

As a Canadian I can tell you that over the past few years there has been a lot of talk here and with in UK (We are a British Colony) to ensure that Canada remains a seperate country from the US, at any cost. For numerous reason and due to our language laws (French is one of two officially recognized languages) it wouldn't work. Not that we wouldn't be happy to have some of the Northern states join us - come on Montana, we're looking at you and your sweet, sweet mountains and fresh powder. Wow - if we had Whistler and Big Sky for our snowboarding pleasure life would amazing :)

The future according to Igor

This is depressing. You mena we're not even going to make it to December 21, 2012?

no profile pic for comment author

Not a bad idea

I'm embarrassed by most of this country. I would be fine with the northeast joining up with Europe. And by all means, let Texas go. They can be their own country, but it seems to me more likely that they will join up with Central America. The US is a failed experiment. We owe trillions upon trillions to China, hopefully the west coast will be enough to pay them off.

I say let it happen. And let the wingnuts go where ever they want, just not New Jersey.

no profile pic for comment author

Good news

Well , this is fine with me ! I am sending off a letter to Canada , better get the ball rolling now ! Hopefully they will accept Washington State and take us in .

no profile pic for comment author

Washington state will become Chinese, so act fast!

BC is a very nice place to live, according to my friends and family. I, on the other hand, will be living the Tennesseean part of the EU. Panarin is interesting, to say the least. He wants Putin to become a Prince of the "Eurasian Union" and praises Stalin.

Alaska

Well, I'm not sure how likely it is that the US will breakup anytime soon. However, if it did, I think it would be far more likely for Alaska to join Canada than Russia. Much more similar culture and a common language.

Saying that Alaska has more

Saying that Alaska has more in common with Canada is a slight to the good Canadians:)

SO.................How do

SO.................How do the southern tbaggers feel about the south joining with Mexico? Tbaggers embrace KGB theory that kinda supports their wet dreams..hahaha that is some rich irony there. Perhaps Mexico will deport texans in an awsome reversal of history? Well when up is down, black is white and fiction is non fiction what can you expect. We really should do a better job educating our citizens of this country to REALITY.

Conservatives have already tried to break up the country. It was called the Civil War. I think we can all agree it was good that the Confederacy was defeated and the country reunited.

no profile pic for comment author

Seems to me EVERYONE seems

Seems to me EVERYONE seems to agree on one thing..... that the US is over, at least as we knew it. The 'right' has it's own hysterical theories on the hows, whens and whys, and those on the 'left' have their own, based more in evidence and actual rational thought, but there nonetheless. And BOTH the far left AND the far right are madder than Hell at Obama.

We've been digging our grave for quite a while, but how we're going to die is still a mystery, like it always is.

no profile pic for comment author

So if the far right and far

So if the far right and far left go their separate ways we will be rid of the weight holding us down at the ends and stretching us out . That will leave the 60 or so % that support Obama back in balance. Of course I am not sure we can talk the extremists into going to Mexico and for sure the Canadians don't want them.

THE SKYSKI IS FALLING! THE SKYSKI IS FALLING!

From the looks of Igor's mug shot and from his ridiculous prediction, it appears he gets much of his daily nourishment from a bottle of vodka, which I hear is very common in Russia. That is part of the reason why the former Soviet Empire broke up.

But here in America, we don't drink vodka for breakfast, we drink beer.

Here are a few reasons why his Chicken Little squawkskis are all wrong.

Our Constitution is like the "Hotel California". Once a state enters the union, it can never leave under any circumstances.

Our military is just too powerful to allow the U.S. to be cannibalized by China, Mexico, Canada and Russia.

The American public would also not allow it. Who would want to hold their loyalty to another country other than America? Very few indeed! We know the secret of America's strength is in E Pluribus Unum, Out of Many, One.

The general consensus of "American academics" now say the danger of experiencing a second Great Depression has been avoided. The financial markets have stabilized. Obama's stimulus plans are working. Now our greatest economic challenge is to find a way to increase employment.

Dr. Igor Chicken Littleski, here in America the sky is not falling. Now go chug another pint of vodka.

Whoever gets Alaska gets

Whoever gets Alaska gets Sarah Palin in the divorce. Think about that.

A breakup of the continental US is a crackpot theory. The loss of US's overseas empire is not. We spend a lot of money keeping the Middle East in an artificial state, and we know our influence in the world hinges on our consumption which is dependent on overseas resources. I think Mexico and other Central American countries may become failed states right on our doorstep, so that will probably spill well into our borders.

War in Europe is probably imminent as well. Western countries made a huge miscalculation by trying to bleed Russia dry instead of integrating them into the community. We were never successful at taking the hydrocarbons from them when we should have just bought them from them honestly. NATO's expansion was a slap in their faces. The joke is that we would never actually fight for any of the new members. We were hoping they'd be able to do something with the weapons we gave them - and they did. They thumbed their noses at Russia bragging about how the US was going to protect them.

I think the fact that

I think the fact that Tbaggers are aligning themselves with fascists shows the capitulation of their fear of freedom that America might actually accomplish under Obama via marriage equality (which has been up to this point albeit disappointing), better quality of life (healthcare), and i guess their greatest fear, true representation for American workers through basic checks on corporate power.
Also, can Texas please, please leave?

Irrational teabaggers

It's simply amazing that these morons have been ranting and frothing at the mouth about President Obama being a Communist but at the drop of a hat, they are embracing one just because he's spewing stupid rhetoric they agree with. They all need to put their tinfoil hats back on. I think their brains have all been fried or reduced to goo by Fox. Do these fools and idiots even know that Russia is a Communist country. God, I get tired of reading and listening to these clowns. Call the President an evil Communist then jump into bed with one because he seems to validate their sad existence. It baffles me watching these teabaggers rant about government takeovers. If these old white people lost their government supplied Medicare or Social Security they'd be screaming about the government not looking out for them. Jeez when will they wake up, stand back and actually listen to what they are being spoon fed by those losers in Congress or in the media? If they only knew that their elected officials and those pundits in the media are all using them to either make political points or gain audience ratings they would probably feel as stupid as they look and sound. If I were on Medicare I wouldn't be screaming about my government trying to push a socialist agenda. Medicare, Social Security, and first responders are all government run.....SOCIALIST. What rubes.

There are 2 different

There are 2 different east-to-west natural gas pipelines in the works.
One starts in Russia and goes to dependent European stoves and heaters.
The other does not- mideastern conglomerate which bypasses the great bear and looks cheaper- but requires a bit extra shipping through the North Sea.
Putin and Medvedev (and their Ologarch sybling rivalry chorus) are beginning to freak out. They had the monopoly game pre programmed and now it looks like Turkey and a few Mideastern empires are going to trump them with German and €U help so they need a splatter shot diversion tactic. Dividing up the Ol U.S an' A, inc. looks like a good game changer- while natural gas is still the fuel of future choice. Giving Mexico Texas would put our Southern Amigos , when combining their own proven gas reserves to the scenario,on top of the natgas heap. Reversing Seward's Folley would help Russia with her newly fatasized artic passage in the case of losing the gas monopoly.
O lot of Vodka is definitely required to keep up the chain of what-if?s in the Kremlin mind.
My state- Colorado would be a black hole in the new empire break up. We would be stuck with antagonistic or jealous neigboring co-regencies- Kansas, Utah, Wyoming, Nebraska and Oklahoma. New Mexico being the only brotherly loved possible partner in the dance and The Land of Enchantment would actually lose luster by joining with us anyway so we would be probably alone. Kind of like the skinny kid who gets teamed last in the pick up games of the Ol' schoolyard league.
Bonehead's Reublic of Colorado. The uppermost basin of the long, thinned, overly dammed river of the same name which already lights up Vegas and Phoenix, then irrigates the fertile California valleys. We would dig a deep, deep hole and sell clean water and left over Coors directly to the Chinese and leave all those downstreamers dark and dry- unless, as the man says, the coast would ceed to China in which case we could just unleish the existing dams and add the Coors and come out on top anyway.
The little rectangle that could!
OK, now I am ready- let the mighty split up commence.
I have my mandarin sales tax translation all set up.

Breakup!

While I have often mused that we New Englanders have more in common linguisticly with the Canadian Maritime provences than we do with the South or the West and Nova Albion (everything east of the Hudson and south of the Saint Lawrence except the Gaspee' peninsula which our Quebecois friends will want to keep) would make a really nice country, Still shilling for collapse is SEDITIOUS! Setting Breakup as a goal (because one don't like a tawny president for instance) is TREASON. I frequently became incensed during the Bush years when the conservatives co-opteds patriotism. Now the same low lives who were accusing citizens who objected to our lastest 2 wars on brown people of disloyalty are now themselves crossing the very line they drew for us "libs". Screw 'em all!

Amazing how much mileage

Amazing how much mileage we're getting out of this "teabagger" strawman. I mean, what are we talking about here, a fraction of a percent of the population? I guess this way it's easier to ignore the fact that, aside from pushing healthcare "reform" and taking mildly more socially liberal positions on other issues, Obama is essentially presiding over Bush's third term. It would be nice if more people were skeptical of the government, regardless of which corporatist stooge is in power.

And this is something new

A month ago I was standing in the bank line waiting to cash my unemployment check and the financial news was on as it always is. There was Secretary Geightner(sp) begging the Chinese government to buy our debt, like we were some third world banana republic. It made me about cry but those whom we owe money own us.

I week later I was down at the Port of Olympia we were importing wind turbines and exporting logs. I think that is the definition of an undeveloped economy export raw materials import finished goods.

Would the Republic of Cascadia be responisble for DC's debts?

Trollstein

There is likely an economic

There is likely an economic collapse impending in the USA. Will this translate into civil unrest and the types of doomsday scenarios being predicted?
Far less reliable of a prediction. The big losers would be the nations holding our T-Bills. Inflation would make their investments worth less and less. A lower value currency would make our manufactured products more desirable for export, thereby tending to counteract unemployment. Of course, commodities and products we imported would become far more expensive, with the major wild-card being oil.

Fair Weather Patriots

What a bunch of Fair Weather Patriots and Summer soldiers! Rather than try to work together to keep the country united they would rather sit around and shrug and act like this is inevitable. They will have the country they deserve if the breakup ever happens.

Fortunately few live in this dream world and most Americans accept that we need to learn to live together as we always have.

Panarin Far From Alone in Predicting Breakup of U.S.

Igor Panarin isn't the only one who's predicting the breakup of the United States in the not-too-distant future. Far from it. I'm no "teabagger" by a long shot -- I'm an old-fashioned FDR-JFK liberal -- but I've had a gut-level feeling since George W. Bush's 2004 election victory that America is headed toward a breakup.

Not economically, but politically. The worsening animosity between the Left and the Right -- which is rapidly falling along racial, religious and generational lines -- is making a breakup of this country more and more likely.

Texas Governor Rick Perry is being pilloried for calling for his home state to secede following Obama's election. But I myself called on New England, my home region (I live in Vermont), to secede after Bush's re-election in 2004.

I see a breakup as inevitable, if for no other reason than the fact that the extremes of the Left and the Right are driving it. Neither side can tolerate the other -- they're increasingly behaving like matter and anti-matter: they cannot peacefully co-exist. Now, they're threatening to pull the center apart -- unless the center coalesces into a third major party.

Now we face the prospect of a sectarian conflict -- pitting Christians against Muslims (especially ultrafundamentalists on both sides who believe that theirs is the only "true" religion and that all others are tools of Satan) -- in the wake of the Fort Hood massacre.

Then there is the matter of 16 million to 20 million Americans unemployed and likely to stay that way for the forseeable future. Unless they form their own businesses, that's 16 million to 20 million potential re-enactors of the French Revolution in America. I'm talking class war.

Under these scenarios, I can't see America staying in one piece much longer.

Again, California

I think it highly unlikely that California will become a territory either of Mexico or of China, though it might eventually secede and possibly confederate with neighboring states. California by itself is the 6th or 7th largest economy in the world remember, and while our state government has its problems, I doubt anyone here would trade it in for the cavalcade of corruption that is Mexico's government or the Commie-In-Name-Only sweatshop masters of Beijing. If the latter tried, they might find themselves with California's own Maoists leading a second cultural revolution, now there's a tasty possibility!

So many of these comments

So many of these comments here are disgustingly racist. "Vodka vodka communist communist." Most are apologetic for the US's hideous action around the world. The US can buy oil and gas from all the Persian Gulf states, Venezuela, Canada, Nigeria, the North Sea, AND Russia. The only reason US (and British) companies are sniffing around the Caspian basin is because it is more profitable than those other options. The only reason people here are defending US actions is because they don't like high market prices (which are not controlled by the above countries). Do you think that if US and British oil companies were more successful in getting that energy that they would generously lower prices for you all? Get real. US created banana republics like Georgia and Azerbaijan while arming them to the teeth to ensure that domestic and foreign politics (while completely dependent on the pipeline) will not affect the flow.

Work on solutions; don't just spew hatred, racism, anti-semitism

The mind of man/woman can be a magnificent thing. Use your brains to solve problems not just to spread hatred etc. If you don't like the health care plan come up with an alternative that covers at least 96% of the population. If you don't like President Obama, run your own candidate in the next election. Work on positive change and see if you can influence the American voters by showing that you have a plan and can implement it and it will solve the problems of unemployment, lack of health care, shrinking middle class, being a debtor nation etc.
Unfortunately, I suspect you just want to hate, feel aggrieved, and spout your nonsense all the while supporting a Communist who wants to see you enslaved and destroyed. Foolish people.

New little countries that used be states..

Soni70
Do the right winger Teabagger ilk, have any sense to figure out what it would be like to make a new little country.. Do they have the big bucks to form their own style of government, laws, freedoms, etc? Do they believe that our government will still give them the big yearly state government welfare to survive? Do they not realize, there could, and more likely will be no more social security, medicare, medicaid and welfare for their needy people or will they line up all they refuse to have as citizens, and march them to the borders, and according to some of the right wingers good version of "Christianity" line them up and kill them for Jesus..
Just think what our government can and will take away from them.. lol.. and some of these right wingers really think the US military will leave all servicemen/women and weapons behind as a gift of building their own little army.. lol shure they will.. lol if this were true.. Tomorrow I will be the new ruler of the world..

How come the right wingers still haven't figured out the difference between the two.. Just because the word social (in variable forms) used in both political beliefs are one and the same to them.. But then we are dealing with right winger teabaggers, and right winger repukies of the Limbaugh, Beck worship core... , the DC march of the teabaggers didn't conviince the majority of Americans of following their "patriotism".. it has become a new sort of comedy produced by the uneducated and escape from the psycho wards.. .. reading the signs.. said it all..

Panarin"s fantasy

Panarin began to say this less than a decade after the break up of the Soviet Union, it seems obvious to me he has a wish for a more successful rival to suffer the same fate. Do the regions of this country have the grievances of centuries as the Baltic states, Ukraine and Georgia have against Russia? Not even close. I wouldn't be surprised to hear Panarin has a similar theory about the future of China. There is a strong smell of sour grapes and wild extrapolation about him. There will always be a percentage of the population who try to lend credence to nonsense like this, for whom peace is boring and calamity something to be anticipated with ghoulish glee, some of them post here.
