King of Pop Dead, News Arc Shifts in His Wake
Clearly Michael Jackson will leave his mark. He might not on those young enough for whom their memories of Jackson are of a bizarre Neverland, of a baby hanging out a window, of a bed inappropriately crowded with children. But those of us who lugged our boom boxes to school to play "Thriller" and "Beat It" on cassette tape during recess, we are the ones who know the impact that the troubled but absolutely brilliant artist had on our lives. Still, since Jackson's brilliance changed music, he'll leave tracks on anyone who's every moonwalked, breakdanced, or rhymed in the cadence and pitch that made him, well, the King of Pop. Anyone who grooves to an iPod, you have Michael to thank somehow.
On a less eulogic note (and there will be oh-so-many retrospectives), this news is already rocking the headlines and leaving everything else (even Farrah) in its dust. As Andrew Sullivan points out, there goes cable coverage of Iran. And now Mark Sanford doesn't have to worry about gracing the cover of any of the weekly tabs. He and his too-much-information emails can fade to black now (and we don't even have to worry about whether it's okay that the governor of South Carolina doesn't know the difference between a whirlwind and a "world wind").
Favorite Michael song of all time? "We are the World" was iconic, the whole Thriller album had the dance beats ("PYT," "Human Nature," etc.) people still cling to, but my pick is "Man in the Mirror." Maybe because to me it feels most ironic, and most honest.

He was my favorite among
He was my favorite among celebrities in the world. Michael Jackson was a fantastic singer, talented dancer, brilliant artist. He has imposed his rhythm in the pop and attracted millions and millions of fans in all over the world since his childhood. It’s hard to have a favorite, Michael Jackson was mine. I have his name in my book of “SOUVENIR” when I was at primary school at age 10 in Africa -Guinea- At that time, children of my age begun dancers in his style and competitions were organized to select the best “Michael Jackson”. He brought joy to us through his music and the rhythm of dance he developed. The book of “SOUVENIR” is a copy book that classmates circulate among them to cite and sign their favorite singer, dancer, actors, etc… and Michael Jackson was mine. It is sad that he is no longer with us.
God bless
Human Nature?
Dance Beats?
In Nicaragua in the 1980's I
In Nicaragua in the 1980's I recall seeing hanging side by side on the walls of poor peoples shacks, posters of Che Guevara and Michael Jackson.
The thriller is gone today.
The King of Pop
My favorite also is
We Are The World.
Long live Michael!
Ok, okay
Maybe not Human Nature for dance beats, but Billie Jean, Beat It, Wanna Be Startin Something...the whole album is stellar.
I may be showing my age, but ...
My favorite song of Michael's is "I'll Be There". I will always remember Michael as the young boy who captured my heart in the 70s with that song.
Of course, "Billie Jean" and "Thriller" were kick-a$$ songs too.

It's sad this happened quite unexpectedly. He was still young and may be could have done great in his come back tour that was scheduled in London. Like his father said, he is bigger dead than alive.
Michael died of a broken heart...
My all-time favorite Michael Jacjson song is "Heal the World" - a song that epitomizes what Michael was so passionate about - his love for his fellow man. It's sad that, in recent years, events in Michael's life caused him to suffer tremendously, particularly the trials and the fact that he never returned to his sanctuary, Neverland Ranch. Michael was a man when he was a boy and a boy when he was a man. He loved children, and - by those seeking a huge payout - he was charged (and ACQUITTED) of child molestation, he was isolated from those with whom he could relate most - children. The loss of this connection, the loss of Neverland (and the solace it brought to him), and the strained relationships with his family were no doubt devastating. Unfortunately, if the speculation about Michael's prescription drug use (anti-depressants, etc.) proves true, it may become clear that Michael died much too soon of a broken heart. Michael and his music were a HUGE part of my childhood/teen years, and his loss is truly painful. But oh, how beautiful Heaven must sound tonight.
Rest in peace, King of Pop...you are missed.
