Over the Rainbow? Redesigning the Gay Flag
In honor of Gay Pride Month, the folks at WNYC's Studio 360 have suggested that the gay flag needs a makeover. For some reason, they think the rainbow flag, originally designed in 1978, has outlived its ability to turn heads and corrupt the youth of America. So far, the contest's Flickr page has just a handful of entries, like this one, which makes up for its Microsoftastic design with a clever appeal to the universal love of bacon.

If you've got design skills, you have until June 26th to rebrand gay identity. Extra points if you use the Photoshop clone tool. And, please, nobody tell Shepard Fairey about this.

I've got an idea.
How about adding a Barack Obama face shot in the center, with the words "Gutless Traitor" printed across his face?
don't forget black and white
I've never liked the Rainbow flag in part because it didn't include the colour black and white. Furthermore, the flag is very gaudy and kitschy.
U.S. designs
Also, let's not forget that some of the submitted designs are totally U.S. centric which is also a stupid idea. The flag is supposed to represent all queers of the world, not just U.S. Please be sure the chosen design will not be U.S. centric, Anglo-centric, Euro-centric, or Western centric. We've had enough of those in history and today.
Gay Pride Flag
I never associate the colors of the Gay Pride Flag with specific racial poplations. I always thought it had something to do with Judy Garland's "Over the Rainbow" song...promissing a better, happier tomorrow when queers would be included and honored for our contributions... for our true colors.
I shall miss our old flag if it is retired. It was a source of pride and hope for many of us over the decades since Stonewall.
Also, let's not forget that
