God Understands Irony, A Postscript
We're not claiming God's a Democrat, but it's clear She doesn't respond to Republican wingnut raindances.
First the Good Lord sent a tropical storm to bungle a meeting of global warming deniers in Florida. Then She conjured up Gustav to threaten to delay Bush's speech at the RNC.
Last night, God flat-out denied ex-pastor (and ex-meteorologist) Stuart Shepard's entreaties to rain on the Obama parade. In the Focus on the Family video clip shown below, the group's digital media director encouraged viewers to pray for rain during Obama's speech at the DNC. Not just "torrential rain," but "network-cameras-can't-see-the-podium rain, attendees-can't-walk-back-to-the-indoor-arena-without-wishing-for-hip-waders rain."
Watch the raindance here:
After the ensuing uproar, and being named "World's Worst Person" by Keith Olbermann, Shepard issued a video mea culpa and Focus on the Family took the original video down. What's next, RNC sunshine requests for McCain and Palin?

Well, I think this bad shepard is begging for some personal attention. Perhaps he can be accomodated...
How 'bout a plague of jackrabbits...
Me
I'm embarrassed to say that I live in the same city as this scumbag. These are the extreme nutjobs who ask their flock to pray for the death of Saddam Hussein's sons. Is this what Jesus would be doing? And how far do we let these zealots go with pushing their political views from the pulpits before we remove their tax-exempt status?

It makes you wonder. Why does this guy wish bad things to happen to someone who calls for an end to the red-and-blue-states mentality, someone who asks us to re-adopt the United-States mentality, someone who asks us to be better than we currently are? What is this guy afraid of?

I would not refer to YHWH as she if I were you, nor would I joke about this. As a Christian, I find it in poor taste that they should pray for vision-reducing rains, basically a curse, upon someone else. Perhaps, out of love, they will learn to pray that Barack Obama seeks out, adheres to, and serves God and is given understanding should he end up being the next president. Sure, I understand their concerns, I share many of the same ones, but I would rather pray for a better candidate to arise even among third parties than for a curse to befall many people of whom may be some true believers in Christ Jesus at that convention in Denver.

Maybe God did answer their prayers. Religious people sometimes say God answers all prayers, but sometimes says no. Maybe this time God said no with an attempt to send a message.
Wouldn't truly generous people have asked God to send rain somewhere suffering from drought? Granted, if God were feeling generous, they wouldn't have the drought, but the prayerful could at least ask. Instead they ask God to ruin things for their political opponents. It would serve them right it a big Midwestern thunderstorm took out the TV broadcasts from St. Paul.

I happen to know for a fact that God is rooting for Nader, whose policies embody The Word more than any other candidate's but yet they never mention religion.
And I also have it that She plans to visit things so horrible on the GOP convention that mere torrential rain will pale by comparison.
Bush and McCain.

Seems to me G-d answered those prayers - but chose the location where the rain would fall. . .

Would it be wrong to pray for rain on important days in Stuart Sheard's life? - or to pray for rain on important days in the life of his family members and friends? Would it be wrong to pray for rain on a day when his grandkids are hoping to enjoy a day in the park, or a day at Disney? Why would anyone try to use God to mess-up another's day? Wouldn't it be a better use of prayer to pray for God to help our world?

Mark, there's nothing remotely offensive about referring to God as She, God's obviously no more He than She, God's not a person with sex, but is far greater and harder to define. I'm all for an occassional reference to God as "She" to remind people of this, and to help atone for years of sexism within the church.
As for praying that Obama "seeks out, adheres to, and serves God" what gives you the impression he doesn't? Why offer that prayer for Obama and not McCain?
We don't need a better candidate (and certainly don't need 3rd parties, already too few participate in our 2-party system, which is the only way common people can access political power to effect change) this Christian and church elder thinks Obama is just fine.

I am continually amazed by the vast majority of Americans that adhere to 2nd century superstitions. If you must have superstitions to comfort you, at least try to incorporate current human knowledge into your god fantasies.
