Mike Huckabee: Playing Both Sides of the Pulpit

At the last Republican presidential debate, former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, who had surged into the lead in the Iowa polls, pitched himself as the potential president who could unite a nation divided. "I think the first priority of the next president is to be a president of all the United States," he said. "We are right now a very polarized country, and that polarized country has led to a paralyzed government. We've got Democrats who fight Republicans, liberals fighting conservatives, the left fights the right. Who's fighting for this country again?...We've got to be the united people of the United States."

In the days before this debate, Huckabee, a former Baptist minister, was hit with questions regarding his past remarks and positions on religion (in 1998 he said, "I hope we...take this nation back for Christ"), on AIDS (in 1992 he proposed that people with the disease be quarantined), and on the role of women in society (in 1998 he endorsed an ad affirming the Baptist teaching that a "wife is to submit herself graciously to the servant leadership of her husband"). And Huckabee was obviously trying to come across as a friendly and reasonable fundamentalist who eschewed the politics of division. But not too long ago, Huckabee was quite willing to be divisive. In a 1998 book decrying American culture, Huckabee was no seeker of common ground. He drew stark lines, equating environmentalists with pornographers and homosexuality with pedophilia and necrophilia. He also declared that people who do not believe in God tend to be immoral and to engage in "destructive behavior." He drew a rather harsh picture of an American society starkly split between people of faith and those of a secular bent, with the latter being a direct and immediate threat to the nation.

The book, Kids Who Kill: Confronting Our Culture of Violence, was hardly a call to come together. Huckabee wrote it with George Grant in response to the March 24, 1998, school shooting in Jonesboro, Arkansas. The book was published in early June of that year, its cover featuring a blurry photograph of a young boy pointing a gun at the reader.

In Kids Who Kill, Huckabee argued that school shootings were the product of a society in decline, a decline marked (and caused) by abortion, pornography, media violence, out-of-wedlock sex, divorce, drug use, and, of course, homosexuality. Huckabee and his coauthor bemoaned the "demoralization of America," observing, "Despite all our prosperity, pomp, and power, the vaunted American experiment in liberty seems to be disintegrating before our very eyes." Huckabee, who was governor at the time and a well-known social conservative, blasted away at those whom he held responsible for America's ills, and he took a rather tough stand against government social programs and their advocates. In lamenting the "cultural conflicts" besetting the country, he wrote,

Abortion, environmentalism, AIDS, pornography, drug abuse, and homosexual activism have fragmented and polarized our communities.

Why was he lumping environmentalism with activities he considered sinful? He did not explain further. A few pages later, Huckabee complained,

It is now difficult to keep track of the vast array of publicly endorsed and institutionally supported aberrations—from homosexuality and pedophilia to sadomasochism and necrophilia.

Huckabee did not say what public endorsement of pedophilia or necrophilia he had in mind. But he did seem to be equating homosexuality with both.

Throughout the book, Huckabee warned of going soft on immorality. He slammed those Christians who accept a "misguided version of 'tolerance'" and do not voice outrage at cultural deterioration. Mocking such Christians, he huffed, "We don't want to offend anyone." He denounced what he termed "radical ideological secularism," and he declared, "in the name of civil liberties, cultural diversity, and political correctness, a radical agenda of willy-nilly moral corruption and ethical degeneration has pressed forward." Without identifying any secularists by name, he wailed,

The legal commitment of ideological secularism to any and all of the fanatically twisted fringes of American culture—pornographers, gay activists, abortionists, and other professional liberationists—is a pathetically self-defeating crusade that has confused liberty with license.

This is not the rhetoric of a fellow looking to heal divisions within American society. And Huckabee approvingly quoted a "pastor-patriot" of the early 1800s who said, "Every considerate friend of civil liberty, in order to be consistent with himself, must be the friend of the Bible." That's a rather fundamentalist definition of a civil libertarian.

In Kids Who Kill, Huckabee addressed the decline of manners and civil discourse in American life. He favorably cited the trenchant analysis of the modern media culture that Neil Postman, a liberal critic, presented in his book Amusing Ourselves to Death. Huckabee argued that the entertainment industry "is conditioning kids to kill." But he also groused about unnamed "modern government-sponsored social engineers," claiming that "virtually every dollar poured into" government social programs "has only made matters worse." With such a remark, he was planting himself firmly in the government-is-the-enemy camp.

Elsewhere in the book, Huckabee denounced no-fault divorce and claimed that "equality in the workplace has ironically worked against women in innumerable ways." Looking for an expert on this matter, he pointed to a 19th-century author named Peyton Moore, who once noted, "Whenever we attempt to muddy the distinctions—the God-given distinctions—between men and women, it is always the women who ultimately lose." He didn't say that women should stay at home. But he heaped scorn on those who advocate workplace equality for women.

So what to do about a culture that breeds kid killers? Faith is more important than policy or politics, Huckabee argued. The "Judeo-Christian religion," he wrote, states "that faith counteracts the destructive effects of sinful actions and activities." That's what you would expect a religious-minded person to believe. But Huckabee went further and declared that nonbelievers tend to be evildoers:

Men who have rejected God and do not walk in faith are more often than not immoral, impure, and improvident (Gal. 5:19-21). They are prone to extreme and destructive behavior, indulging in perverse vices and dissipating sensuality (1 Cor. 6:9-10). And they—along with their families and loved ones—are thus driven over the brink of destruction (Prov. 23:21).

Huckabee is certainly entitled to his religious beliefs and his own view of human nature. He is free to think that nonbelievers cannot be trusted. But should Huckabee be allowed to play both sides of the pulpit? Kids Who Kill presented a black-and-white perspective: environmentalists, homosexuals, civil libertarians, supporters of social programs, advocates of workplace equality, and nonbelievers are on the dark side and allied with the forces of decline; people who believe in the Bible are the decent Americans. In 1998, Huckabee was claiming a religion-oriented cultural war was under way in the United States and he was happy to be a warrior for his side. Now he says he wants to bring together a "polarized" society. His 1998 book—full of unforgiving rhetoric—indicates that Huckabee is more comfortable creating divides than bridging them.

Perhaps the "polarity" we are seeing is a natural evolution of society. Isn't it possible that large, diversified countries or society eventually develop various incompatible elements within the political system that cannot be represented by a single political system? Read the Declaration of Independence. Perhaps their should be a "Liberal States of America", and a "Conservative States of America", so no one is forced to live in a country they no longer feel serves their cultural needs. Maybe breaking up all the super states/pan-ethnic nations would be a way to end conflict. So far, forcing people to live together hasn't worked.

This doesn't mean that he thinks these things are "evil" (did he say that?-no) He said that these are cultural conflicts, they POLARIZE the country. Thats even true with enviromentalists. I don't see that this quote passes judgement, but instead shows that he is very in touch with the things that people argue over.

If Huckabee wins the nomination we forget about having a Republican in office next term. He will not win a National election. Like Hillary, there are just too many people who don't feel comfortable with him. His assessment in this article is correct (coming from an athiest, not some bible humper) but most of this country isn't intellectually honest enough for such statements.

Two thoughts: While I haven't read the book, it looks from the passages that when it comes to homosexuality and environmentalism, Huckabee kept the behaviors separate from people. Sadly, I think we are losing our ability as a society to love people while also opposing their beliefs and ideas at the same time. The article and the other comments show why true Christianity will be increasingly shunned in a society where pure tolerance is the number one value. Jesus is the only major religious figure who unabashedly says that those who do not know him do not know God. He simply isn't tolerant enough for modern America. I wish more people would seem him for who he is - someone that must be either beleived and worshipped as God or completely written off as a dangerous nutjob. Those who try to paint him as a dress-wearing, free-love hippy that had some good ideas do not know what they are talking about.

Wow!!! Now I like Huckabee even more!!! BTW...the "wives, submit to your husbands" statement is NOT a "Baptist Teaching"...it's a Christian teaching. It's straight from Collosians. Don't know why this causes so much apoplexy on the left. If they'd read the passge, they'd see that it also says that Husbands must honor their wives (boy, that's controversial!), and that Fathers must not embitter their children. Huckabee is dead-on right in his book. Winning the country back for Christ? It's a nice dream.

My current doubts on Huckabee are based on his pardoning of felons as Governor and his nutty idea of a national sales tax which his not only unworkable but toxic to the economy. Having not read his book I can not say anything of value but from what I've heard here, Huckabee looks pretty good. America needs a divisive leader bent on cleaning up the national social mess of the sixties. A hundred years ago Republicans caved to radical democrats to be more 'inclusive' rather than clean up the mess from the eighteen sixties. Leaving us with a Supreme Court and lesser courts no longer bound to the Constituion or rule of law with Jim Crow, the KKK, the One Drop Rule and all the things of Radical Racism and corrupt state governments weighing us down. A mess that is still not yet cleaned up and tearing into the soul of our nation and society. Republicans should not be foolish to repeat this same mistake of 'Inclusion' now with radical debauchery with the same cancers and Corrupt Federal Government. It's only making things worse. It's time to bight the bullet and clean up the mess, get the job done.

If you cannot stand the evangelical message under all circumstances, no, Mike Huckabee will not be your guy. There are idealogues of all stripes in the American political system, so elections come down to who can best draw the middle together. We will see if Huckabee is that person; the level of attack being leveled at him at present is pretty aggressive, but is likely the only vetting process that will give him any strength to go to the presidency. He is not going to give either side of the political spectrum a ideological 'victory,' but hopefully his stance on many issues will allow reasonable people come together to solve problems. Truth is, the diehard conservative right is terrified of Huckabee's unwillingness to bend to the corporate interests and reactionary nativist ideology. For many non-political swing voters, he may prove to nbe an excellent alterative to the polished insiders who dominate the nation's politics.

There are four main religions in this country that are engaged in a holy war against Christianity. The number one religion, The Abortion Charismatics. There are zealots all around us. The abortion religion in truth has as its foundation the worshipping of anti-submission to men. And the fact that abortion includes death, that's just icing on the cake, another contribution to the offering plate. These death Stalinists use accusations of oppression as their guardian while marching on, putting the sword to the enemy, the trespassing fetus. Conversly, The Bible advises us to choose life and states that those who side with death are with the devil. Religion number two, The Orthodox Homosexuals. The homosexual hit squad, they worship immoral sex and preach its acceptance with a formidable vigor. Evangelism for sex acts fully funded and proselytizing to all the people. The religion of orgasms, just as long as you partake with someone of the same gender. This bunch uses as their shield victim status to fight the feels-good fight to advance their perversion to the unconverted. Conversly, In The Bible God warns strongly against homosexuality. Religion number three, The Pentecostal Environmentalists. They worship myths and have as their god mother nature. This includes the global warming cash cow. The same scientist who during the failed Carter administration predicted a resurrection of the ice age now predict the opposite thirty years later. This is a money raising scheme which is a thinly veiled Nazi hit squad against capitalism and Christian prosperity. They worship animals, the same animals God instructed us to subdue in Genesis. They worship the earth, the same earth God advises us in the Bible not to love due to the fact that it is fallen and ruled by Satan. The same earth God promised in Genisis in The Bible that he would never again flood and gave us the rainbow as a reminder. Although Pentecostal Environmentalists claim that the god of global warming is angry with us for our poor stewardship and therefore is threatening to flood us with melting glaciers. And the forth religion, The United Church of Envy. The religion of envy has as its decree welfare, social programs of all kinds, and higher taxes. It wishes to crucify anyone who is successful. The wealth of others is condemned. They fiercely seek conversion, not conversion of souls...conversion of other people?s money - to themselves. This faction is represented by Poverty Pastors from all status levels in society. From the born rich guilt ridden politicians, to the up and coming street-cred playa's. The Poverty Pastors are well known for dipping their hands into the collection plate. The parishioners in this religion are extremely loyal. This truly is the shepherd and the sheep, waiting in their pews for a reverse offering, peering up at the Poverty Pastor, and hoping for a reverse tiding. The Poverty Pastors assure them, "I will lead you by still money's". Conversly, The Bible tells us not to covet other peoples property, and recommends that we work for money instead. The Mega Church of Liberalism houses all these religions. They are extremely tolerant of any religion so long as its not that of the true God. Their enemy is not Satan as in Christianity, but their common enemy is in fact Christ. Hence the unity among the various religions. They know that if the church of the true God is torn down, they can then replace it with their gods. Their strategy is to incrementally replace Christianity with their false gods and religions of idolatry. At the same time they are attempting to diminish the credibility of God of the Bible and of Christianity. Their are two battle fronts going on. They do this by accusing the one true God. Accuse him of being mean, judgmental, and close minded. They wish to vilify our creator so they can bring in and glorify and worship their idols. They also want to convince others to worship their gods as well. The Mega Church of Liberalism organizes and promotes these religions. They band together to erect a stronger and taller church than the church that Christ built. If the religion of Christ is defeated and removed, they know that their idols can move in to take its place. They believe their religions would then flourish and be elevated in stature. This is their true desire, to magnify their gods. To boast their gods. To proudly flaunt their gods for all to see, proclaiming since victory is theirs, then their god must in fact be the true god.

This is indead editorial in nature. Did anyone actually read and think about the quotes alone, or did you all follow the liberal, instructor (writer) is always right? Thank God when I went to college it was about learning to think critically and for myself, not to just regurgitate and believe everything I was told/read. Few of you would make it as scientists. And as for the Jesus haters : "If you don't know me you don't know God "doesn't mean worship him, it means to follow his principles. The same (or similar) priciples are found in the majority or religions in the world. Oh, and the definition of Catholic is +all encompassing," not beleive what I do or your wrong. Winning the country back for Christ is a nice dream? Yeah, so is Sharia law. Anyway, it wouldn't be "winning the country for Christ" (odd way of putting it, isn't Christ God and he could win anything he wishes?). It would be enhancing the power of theocrats who love to stick their noses into everyone's private lives. In pre-Christian Rome, Christians were persecuted for not bending their knee to the emperor and the Roman gods. How similar this sounds to those who wish every knee to bend to Jesus of Nazareth, when you start wishing for a Christian America.

Mike, just an FYI...Christianity/Christ has divided people since he came to this earth as a God in the flesh. King Herod wanted him killed the day he was born. Why? Because he was a threat. Unfortunately, he's the best friend a person could ever have. The Bible states that the Word, (that's the Bible)...(that's also God) is a stumbling block to the fool. Guess you're the fool here. People who complain about this piece - do you really think if Huckabee gets the nomination, all his writings are *not* going to be pored over? Will you cry "unfair!" each time he's held to account for his controversial statements? Maybe they aren't controversial to you, but for every supporter who thinks Huckabee is telling it like it is, there are many more who will recoil in horror. He doesn't stand a chance.

It is obvious tht David Corn of Mother Jones just doesn't get it. Huckabee is right on in his assessment of what is wrong with America. And anyone who thinks his sane assessment means he is against women, the environment or poor souls bound by Homosexuality doesn't understand true honest love. Huckabee is the kind of man who can truly help america, he understands it's moral decay and cares enough to admit the destructive nature this decay is having on it's citizens. A good Doctor understands the disease. Honestly tells the patient the problem and helps the patient understand the treatment that is necessary for health.

The more I hear about this guy the more I like him. The way things are shaping up our next president will be either Romney or Huckabee. I tend to think that Romney can offer little more that more of the same. Whereas, Huckabee shows a flexibility in hiw viewpoints between then and now, as it is with most healthy articulate and knowledable humans.

Huckabee and his supporters are mean, fact-averse theocrats who want to take us back to the middle ages. He can strum on his guitar all he wants, but we know he's not a modern, laid back, or nice guy at all. Huckabees views are wrong and immoral. Gay people are created the way we are. We're not lying about that; the evangelicals are the ones not telling the truth. And environmentalism is now necessary for our very survival. The Huckabeasts are insane.

I am a conservative, but this book is utter rhetorical crap. You know the cause for all these school shootings? Horrible parenting. Where do these young teens get their guns? These are white kids from the burbs, not the inner city. Enough with this victimization crap and Huckabee is just as polarizing as Hillary. Bush was been a slave to the fundamentalists, and you people want to elect another? Look at the state our country is in. Jesus, and guys like Huckabee claim to be different than all those "evil-doers" they call Islamo-Fascists? What's the difference except for the religious names of gods and texts? I grew up to this Christian fundamentalist stuff - James Dobson practically wrote my mother's guidebook - and I can honestly say that not all Christians are like this, but their silent response to such hateful rhetoric really doesn't prove that. Thank God I have seen the light and am now a tree-hugging, progressive lesbian feminist media activist!

Self-proclaimed "Christian leader" Mike Huckabee can't defend his record on spending, taxes, crime, immigration, aids, Cuba, ethics, etc., so he resorts to spouting standard anti-Mormon talking points in order to distract his evangelical base from the real issues. He has obviously succeeded to some extent as demonstrated by the absurd posts his supporters post on the internet. Huckabee is a buffoon who has no chance of being elected. He should apologize and slink back to his snake hole in Arkansas with his own spiritual "brother" Slick Willie Clinton. After admitting ignorance of the recent Iran intellignece report, the Huckster recently joked that while he didn't know much about foreign policy, "I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night!" HE is the joke. (Apparently they don't teach history, economics or management at Bible college.) I just hope that people will wake up and realize that being a "Christian" does not qualify a man for the presidency.

They assemble and fight to be able to conduct in utero dismemberment of unwelcomed viable fetuses, Southern style lynching's of the outnumbered overpowered defenseless suspect infants, and advocate selling the dead flesh for profit. They inspired the Columbine slaughters. They allow the murdering of dissenting civilians without repercussions as was done in Ruby Ridge Idaho and in Waco Texas. They want only government employees to have guns and want disarm civilians rendering them defenseless thereby setting the stage for tyranny. They believe that if you stand against them you can be snuffed out, or you should be chopped up and your body parts sold. All Monotheistic Religions are Philosophies of Death, if not initially in conception, always as practiced by the imperfect human adherents. I recommend a book called "Fighting Words, The Origins of Religious Violence" by Hector Avalos on this subject. I may be imperfectly summarizing it but he very adeptly describes how each creates four "scarce" resources that then end up being fought over. 1) Sacred Spaces (Israel, Jerusalem, Mecca, etc. - i.e. patches of dirt where something supposedly important happened), 2) Holy Scriptures - "the true words", the lingo that describes and controls the philosophy and therefore excludes any other untrue interpretations, 3) Group Privilege - Our believers are somehow more special or entitled to life and resources as we are the "chosen" - whether that comes explicitly as a people in the case of the Jews or individually by being chosen to receive the "enlightenment" of the nature of "reality" which leads you to your beliefs, in the case of Islam or Christianity and 4) Salvation - the "eternal" component that only our believers will receive and are entitled to. Throw in human behavior, politics and REAL scarcity of natural resources (as opposed to the scarcity of these 4 imaginary resources) and Voila! Stir, bake a generation or two and all of them will yield the same continuing irrational bloodshed that continues to consume the world.

In today’s world, Christians are divided among those who value most their eternal salvation (fundamentalist, conservative Christians) and those who value most Christ’s social (or nearness of the Kingdom) ministry (liberal, tolerant, Kingdom oriented Christians). As a member of the latter, I condemn the fundamentalists for their intolerance, their exclusion of those different from themselves (or those approved only by their majority, as in the case of Senator Larry Craig). So in general, I condemn actions that are only self-serving and fail to consider the Other. Unlike my conservative colleagues, I don’t think that a particular rule gets at the core spiritual issues. It is never so simple, but you see my goal above (it is an issue of combating pride and selfishness). The conservative Christians have signed on to the distortions of Christianity produced by emperor Constantine’s conversion. So we see a close relationship between fundamentalists and military adventurism. This is the Theology of Glory (Triumphalism), as opposed to the founder of the Reformation, Martin Luther. He espoused the Theology of the Cross and the grace of God, as opposed to works. Fear becomes a prime motivator for these conservative Christians, concerned about triumphalism or glory and their personal salvation. They are manipulated by fear to assure their salvation and to drain their money to the glory of their leadership. Religion, in general, should help one to overcome life’s fears and desires. Lutherans know salvation, whatever that means, is up to God. Fears and desires have no impact. Your misguided attempts for salvation (whatever that means) are not effectual. If you think fundamentalist Christian views are the whole of Christianity, I encourage you to consider us as friends and colleagues that populate the liberal (true?) tradition. Believe what you want, but help us bring the kingdom (justice) to the world. Your actions are a response to a Great Understanding that you are saved, whether you want to be or not.

And let's get one more thing straight. When liberals mock the intolerant, we are not being intolerant. I love it when theocrats with a victim complex use the rhetoric of liberal values to try and claim they are the victims of persecution. We godless secular libs have no objection to you believing whatever you want to believe, and practicing your religious values as you see fit. But we reserve the right to ridicule some of those views. David Corn, after noting Huckabee's belief that nonbelievers tend to be "evildoers," states that "Huckabee is certainly entitled to his...own view of human nature." I disagree. Huckabee may indeed believe that nonbelievers are more likely to be bad people. Is he "entitled" to that belief? Most certainly he is not, since that belief flies in the face of all evidence to the contrary.

There is a cultural crisis in America. We are the most Christian nation on the planet. Because of this we are the most merciful country in the world. Because we are Christian we have exported the most amount of food to the rest of the world. We give away the most amount of money. We go all over the world helping people, helping them build homes, helping them dig wells, giving them medicine and medical care. But, there are people in this country who hate Christians. They don't like us because we respect God's rules. They want a country that is run like the 'easy' babysitter, the one who is lax and lets anything go. Like the carefree substitute teacher you had as a kid that just let you do whatever the heck you wanted. Heck yeah! When we were kids we were like that. But now, we're all grown up. Some of us. The makeshift trial has already taken place among the bands of blood thirsty rebels in high places. There is a blood lust for our Christian heritage. We know what antiChristian countries can be like. Communist Russia, communist China, the Middle East with the dictatorships, Cuba with its merciless Marxist Communist dictator, the power seizing communist dictatorship of Venezuela that accomplice Democrat Jimmy Carter aided and abetted, and North Korea with its pagan death thirsty Godless leader. I wonder what these dictator's 'human rights' stance is on partial birth abortion. I bet they don't mind some killin'. It would be very dangerous if the Liberals in this country were to succeed. Aside from Vermont's secessionist movement, there is no public discourse about the US devolving into smaller nations. But any such entities would be far more representative, more democratic and better able to cope with the issues that actually matter to its citizens. Devolution is happening in many other parts of the world, successfully and with American blessing. Why is it taboo to think it best for us as well? I think the South had it right all along, even if it was for the wrong reasons.

Paul - you really are a sad person. Your comments show you have that "the world is out to get us because we are Christians" bunker mentality. We are NOT out to get you. We are just trying to make sure you don't get us. We'd be very happy to just ignore you and let you live out your finite existence believing whatever you want. The problem comes when you keep trying to change the world and mold it in what you believe is "Christ's image" through the coercive power of government. While Christ or his followers may have admonished you to pray for the powers that be, I don't recall him ever telling you to try and take the reigns of government and force his dogma down anyone's throats. That's exactly what you and your ilk are trying to do and guess what? We who don't believe as you do tend to react to that. You see it as some form of persecution. We see it as telling you to shut the hell up and stay out of our lives.
