RE:ACTION

Evansdale, IA — At a campaign event on Friday in Carroll, Iowa, Mitt Romney tried to identify the lowest point of his presidential campaign for a crowd of about 90 gathered at a local country club.

Earlier this year, Romney said, his wife and he ascended a two-part stage at an event in Dubuque. The part of the stage that his wife, Ann Romney, stood on wasn't built properly, and it collapsed under her weight, sending Ann tumbling to the ground. "I fell on da butt in Dubuque," she said.

Romney's attempt at humor notwithstanding, the real low point in his campaign might well have been this week. Multiple polls have showed former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee leading Romney by double digits in Iowa, a state that Romney has devoted inordinate amounts of money and time to and has owned, poll-wise, for months. Polls also show that Huckabee has opened up a sizable lead over Romney in South Carolina and is gaining ground in Nevada, another early state. As Romney fixed himself onstage at the Carroll venue, Journey's "Don't Stop Believing" blared ominously over the speakers. Empty seats littered the back of the room, only filled by stragglers well after the event's official start time.

After speaking for only over fifteen minutes, during which he garnered infrequent and tepid bursts of applause, Romney received three questions before the crowd fell still and he had to prompt further discussion with the line, "Well, this is quiet here." Later, Romney spoke to a capacity crowd in a small venue in Early, Iowa (crossroads of the nation, apparently), and finished the day at an event at Buena Vista University, where he was again unable to fill the house.

Romney has bled supporters to Huckabee as the dynamics of the race have shifted. Almost completely absent from Romney's crowds Friday were the values voters who earlier flocked to his events in admiration of his strongly conservative positions on marriage (not for gays!), family (not for single parents!), and abortion (not for anybody!). The people who remain are occasionally disdainful of those religiously oriented voters and are impressed primarily by two things: Romney's long history of success in the private sector and his tougher-than-thou stance on illegal immigration.

Erma Wilson, an elderly woman who deals antiques in Jefferson, Iowa, cited Romney's record at Bain Capital and his stewardship of the Salt Lake City Olympics as the reason she was supporting him. "Anyone who's accomplished everything he's accomplished should be president of the United States," she said.

A man who declined to give his name said that he was moving from Giuliani to Romney. Romney is "realistic," he said. "He's not going to solve the energy crisis in five years, like a lot of these guys promise. And he's got a business background. He's not a hack politician."

I asked the man why he thought Huckabee had taken a lead in Iowa. "These folks," he said, searching for the right word. "These fundamentalists, the religious groups. What are they?"

"Evangelicals?"

"Evangelicals! They've got off on the edge. They're clamoring on Huckabee, and I think Huckabee personally is a shallow guy. He doesn't have the background or the experience."

A woman named Virginia standing nearby cited Romney's "business background" to explain why she favored him. "The Christian Right" is propelling Huckabee in Iowa, she said with a grimace. But, she added, Huckabee would fare poorly in those parts of the country without a large section of fundamentalists.

A married couple at the Crossroads Restaurant in Early noted that they had chosen Romney recently because, "He's a businessman. He knows how to get things done." I asked whom else they had considered. "Not Giuliani, he's just too liberal," said the wife, Marilyn Winkel. "Huckabee is okay, we like his values. But Romney has the background to get things done." This was a theme echoed by others in Early: "Values" were a must, and both Romney and Huckabee had them. But Romney's private sector experience distinguished him from the former Baptist pastor.

At Buena Vista University, a woman named Janice from Cherokee, Iowa, was seeing Romney for the fourth time. "He's tough, he's been in the business world. He's not a dreamer," she said. "The thing I like most about [Romney] is his stance on this illegal immigration. Our country has been asleep as the wheel and we have got to get rid of these people. He's having this Mike Huckabee problem here in Iowa, but Mike Huckabee is a minister. People have to realize ministers are not tough."

I asked her about Huckabee's support in Iowa. "The Evangelical people are Bible-toting people and they like him because he is a minister. But you can't run your country on the Bible," she said, sounding exasperated.

"Do you mean in a practical sense?" I asked. "Or because it violates the Constitution?"

"No," she said. "Most people who are Bible-toting people want to be everything to everybody. You're supposed to give to the poor, and you're supposed to do this and that. And that's fine. But when it comes to running a country, you can't be that way."

"They're just too nice?" I clarified.

"Yes!" she said.

Romney, for his part, was confident that the Bible-toters mobilizing for Huckabee wouldn't derail his chances in the caucus. Speaking at a press conference after the Storm Lake event, Romney stood in front of cameras, wearing a Mr. Rogers sweater over a semi-casual button-down shirt, with pleated khakis and brown loafers. He emphasized that his "grassroots team" and precinct-by-precinct ground game was going to carry him to victory. "I think we have the best [organization] in the state," he said.

That may be. But with three weeks to go, Romney appears to be drawing his support mainly from Iowan Republicans looking for a CEO to run the country. Unfortunately for Romney, more GOPers in the Hawkeye State are looking for a pastor, and a nice one at that.

A 'nice pastor' who gave the "go-ahead" on numerous executions. And with 'no experience' as a two-term governor for ten years in a state where he ran against and beat the clinton political machine and actually got things done with an overwhelming majority of his legistalure in the blue. Ah, shucks. I think there's a bit more to the man than this article presents to us. Thanks for the opportunity to give feedback! www.mikehuckabee.com

I agree with the comments made by the Romney supporters at the Townhall. I believe he is the only candidate running who actually has the executive skills to do what he says he'll do. How many politicians make promises, then actually fulfill them in office? After he became Governor, Romney had his aides go through and note down how many campaign promises he'd made. They noted 92 or 93. They rounded this up to an even 100 and publicized the list. By the time he ended his term as Governor, he had completed all 100 items on his list, as well as others. All of these politicians promise great things, but you have to ask - who actually has been tested and proven in the fire (remember, Mitt had to work with Ted Kennedy and the rest of the democrats in Mass. to achieve these goals) to show results? Important to note, that all of Mitt's accomplishments in his state were victories for conservatives - his record shows consistently conservative decisions. Mike's record of achievements as governor for 10+ years don't come close to what Romney achieved in his 1 term. I am also concerned with Mike's ability to make objective, well-informed, data-driven decisions. Mitt's skills in this area are uncontested. I'm for Mitt - all the way.

The Trouble with Mitt is he flips on every "value" he preports to embrace when it comes time to run for what-ever office he happens to be running for, and it's on video tape! I agree with who-ever said the problem with the Republicans is that in empthesizing religious values in their candidates you end up with a President like GW whom doesnt listen to anyone but God, and look where that got us. Prayer and wishful thinking isnt a good approach to governing.

Romney tried to have his cake and eat it too, and is choking on the toxic recipe. He wanted to exploit the bigotry of the BARN (born again redneck) base of his party while not becoming its target. He thought he could bash gays and undermine abortion rights, in a politically calculated reversal of previous positions in liberal Massachusetts, but avoid the stigma associated with his Mormonism among the same voters. It didn't work when his speech, intended to convince the BARN voters of his far-right bona fides, fell flat. It was the antithesis of Kennedy's speech; JFK promoted secularism and separation of church and state to reassure voters, while Romney promoted theocracy and tried to sidestep the distinctly non-mainstream nature of his religion. The beneficiary has been the superficially affable, charmingly inconsistent but fundamentally anti-science, anti-gay, anti-choice, xenophobic (despite a few quirky moments in the past), pro-war Huckabee, whose credentials for the role of America's Ayatollah are unassailable.

I don't think "What went wrong?" is the appropriate question here. Or it's at least not being asked at the right level. IMO, "what went wrong" is Romney decided it was a good idea to run for president. At first, with all his money, commercials, success stories, and even a little charm, he was able to grab a great deal of supporters (including nearly all ~6 million Mormons in the country). As time goes on and people really begin to scrutinize the candidates, they saw Romney for what he is: "Mr. Whoever I think you probably want me to be at the moment". This man has no principles. He stands for nothing; his only goal is to win. This type is good at getting elected at local-level political offices, but I'm surprised he was ever even elected as a governor. I guess the CEO title and the bags of money that come along with it buy some clout.

The candidate who would unite both groups is the one that just broke the all time, single day fundraising record: Ron Paul. His views on issues that the 'evangelicals' care about (abortion, gay marriage, homeschooling etc.) are conservative and he also has shown great ability to those on the other sides of the fence (people against the war, people who support a smaller government, free market, etc.) The main stream media will be shocked when Ron Paul wins the nomination.

"Get Rid of the these people"? What's that all about - which people do they mean? The White people, brown people, or just everybody who wasn't here when Chris Columbus wandered over? Exactly when is it OK to immigrate?

single day fundraising record: HRC in June 6.2 million? Why lie when the facts are already in print? Ron Paul - all time record for a GOP candidate - all time for online but not the all time one day - unless he beat 6.2 milllion. I know you like Ron Paul but not so much the facts don't matter, eh?

Does it really matter? Neither of the two will be president. Dick will find a way to get Jr. four more years.

Capt, check the FEC filings. HRC never made 6.2 million in a day. I don't know how she came up with that number, but it certainly is not recognized by the FEC. In fairness, neither are Paul's 4.2 or 6.04 million dollar days.. yet. We'll have to wait till mid-January for the official FEC Q4 numbers to know for sure. But my guess is that their reported figures are pretty darn close.

Re Ramiro's post on his main man, Huckleberry Hound: We're supposed to be impressed by someone who gave the "go-ahead" on numerous executions? Good grief! That sounds more like Geo. W. Douchebag than anyone else. We need someone in the Oval Office who will work toward ending the death penalty nationwide forever, rather than a bloodthirsty [deleted] who takes pride in giving the "go-ahead" to take another person's life. And what about Huckleberry's son's treatment of innocent animals? One of his sons & a friend cut the throat of a stray dog at a summer camp, hung it by its neck, & finally stoned it to death. Both boys were fired from their camp counselor jobs, but due to political pressure by Huckleberry himself, his son never faced prosecution for his evil act on an innocent creature. And what about Huckleberry's total ignorance of the very significant Iran NEI, which shot down Bush/Cheney's fantasy of bombing Iran? The entire world knew about it for 2 days, but Huckleberry didn't have a clue. Not very presidential, if you ask me. And what about Huckleberry's pardon of a serial rapist/murderer, who, when pardoned, went right out & raped & murdered some more. And when Huckleberry was recently asked about it, he chose to lie & try to blame Bill Clinton for the pardon, forgetting, apparently, that one of the rapist's victims happened to be a cousin of Bill Clinton. And so on & so on. Huckleberry deserves to be president about as much as Guiliani, & don't get me started on that criminal creep!

Can't see any one on the horizon that would be a nation builder. Mitt the businessman would sell this country's capital to the lowest bidder as have all GOP presdents. They honor the Constitution mainly in the breech. The GOP candidates are either for a theocracy or a kakistocracy or both. Mind you the Democrats are not much better. A pox on the lot of them.

Given that Dubya is the first US President with an MBA, I am not eager to ask for more of the same. He took Bill Clinton's fiscal responsability and flushed it all the way to China. That said, Mass has had worse Governors, and I don't anticipate a "faith based initiative" from Romney. The GOP could definately do worse.

In my previous rant re Huckabee (or Huckleberry, as he's called by some wags), I had a senior moment & neglected to mention that when the republican presidential candidates at a "debate" (Yeah, right!) were asked for a show of hands if they did not believe in evolution, Huckleberry was one of 3 candidates who raised his hand. The position of leader of the free world is no place for scientific illiteracy. He probably also believes the earth is flat. He has proudly proclaimed himself "God's candidate" & has said that his standing in the polls is a direct result of divine intervention. And if you think this is troubling, listen closely to Romney. He, too, wants to be Ayatolla in Chief. Separation of church & state is anathema to these guys. They want them to be synonymous. Luckily, neither of them will get to the White House. If I'm wrong, Canada here I come!

Dept of Justice is trying to cover up $300 million in fraud and confessed acts that are perjury which benefited Mitt Romney's Bain entity in 2001. The Attorney for Bain in Delaware is MNAT, MNAT and TBF law firm went to work for eToys and sold the assets of eToys bankruptcy to Bain for discounts in the tens of millions. This is collusion to defraud and estate. As the attorneys filed false affidavits denying connections to Bain. It is conspiracy to defraud an estate. We proved over 100 crimes and yet the Del US Attorney's office said, no case, no investigation and no charges. The Dept of Justice is an appellee with MNAT in the 3rd Cir appeal case (07-2360) defending the right to give implied immunity to the attorneys who confessed to filing false Rule 2014 affidavits. Now we learn that the US Attorney in Delaware, Colm F Connolly is nominated to be a US Judge. His resume becomes public and we learn that Colm F Connolly was partners with MNAT in 2001, when the fraud and perjury occurred. Did Colm F Connolly actually represent Bain, we don't know, eToys was allowed, by Court order, to destroy books n records. The fact is, it is a conflict of interest for the US Attorney not to appoint a special Independent Prosecutor. Do you really want this guy as a Judge and Mitt as our Pres? For years rogue parties at the Dept of Justice have declined to prosecute $300 million in fraud and perjury that benefited Romney's Bain entity in 2001 when Romney was the controlling manager. . Now that his nomination is in jeaporady the clemency that was given to the Bain affiliated law firms of TBF and MNAT now are coming under scrutiny. . With the recent discovery that the US Attorney for Delaware, Colm F Connolly, who's office declined to prosecute the confessed acts of Perjury (TBF and MNAT have admitted to filing more than 19 false affidavits in the eToys federal bankrutpcy case) - where it is now learned that the Colm Connolly was a partner with the MNAT law firm in 2001 when the fraud and perjury began. . Many resignations occurred, prior to this time, running into resistance to prosecute the potential future President. . Now, with a new Attorney General who is taking steps to clean up the Dept of Justice, the question is, will Delaware Justice Dept personnel who utilized Tax payer dollars to defend the Bain attorneys, be investigated? . You can see the online affidavits on the more than 100 felony violations at http://fraud-corruption-mnat.townhall.com/default.aspx

The name is Steven Haas (a/k/a Laser Haas, I do not respond to anything other than Laser.

Now to the new point, we state the allegations Under Penalty of Perjury, and have sent such to every ORG that you can think of.

When we discovered the proof that Colm F Connolly, the US Attorney in Delaware was a partner with the MNAT law firm, that has confessed to filing multiple false affidavits because the proof we provided was Irrefutable, being their own (other case) documents, where the Delaware Dept of Justice not only does not prosecute MNAT, it will not even mention the MNAT law firm name, even when it is an Appellee with MNAT in the Third Circuit Ct of appeals (case nu 07-2360)

We then reported such to the US Attorney In California (eToys is based in CA and filed BK in Delaware)

That report resulted in the US Attorney Tom O'Brien disbanding of the Public Corruption Unit and the L A Times reported that O'Brien threatened career prosecutors to keep their mouths shut and not speak to the press or they would be tarnished.

You can see all the online proofs, that are greatly Court Docket or Dept of Justice records at http://fraud-corruption-mnat.townhall.com/default.aspx

Nor party or person loyalty should cross the line of becoming Complicit in assisting Racketeering efforts to steal public companies.

Senator Feinstein has now sent a letter to the new AG Mukasey, asking him to explain the disbanding of the Public Corruption unit.

It is our case

It is YOUR System of Justice.
