A World Series We Can Believe In?
A WORLD SERIES WE CAN BELIEVE IN?....A friend points out that the last time the Phillies won the Series was October 1980, ushering in the election of Ronald Reagan and a long era of conservative ascendency. Tonight the Phillies won again. Another sign of a new era in politics? Maybe!

We could all do with such a change. The entire planet I mean as well as these United States.
I`m not a baseball fan but I am happy that Philly won if for no other reason than to shut down the blah, blah, blah about the miracle bozos from Florida. At least wait until the team wins before writing their Cinderella story guys.
“Data always beats theories. 'Look at data three times and then come to a conclusion,' versus 'coming to a conclusion and searching for some data.' The former will win every time.” - Matthew Simmons
If there is any kind of prophetic significance in the Phillies win, it is that the clearly better team won despite an eleventh hour bit of weirdness with the suspended game. The Rays and their fans managed to convince themselves that they could eke out game 5, and then it would be a brand new series headed back to Tampa. But the reality was that the fundamentals overwhelmed whatever serendipity the Rays might have benefited from.
One fear that I have is that the Phillies actually have a very good team whose core players are all young and all signed through next season. If they somehow manage to repeat, does that mean a very short liberal era?
One other thought: whenever people say that 1980 was the last time the Phillies won the World Series, they always neglect to mention the additional piece of information that 1980 was the only previous time that the Phillies ever won. Thus, I'm assuming that for the period of 1776-1980, the U.S. was a nightmarish hellhole for conservatives.
Keep that in mind the next time your conservative friend brings up "original intent" in constitutional debates. "Oh yeah? Well that was before the first time the Phillies won the World Series! Take that!"

True (the Phils are the last of the 16 pre-expansion franchises to win multiple World Series), but just to clarify, a Philadelphia team has won the Series five other times -- the Athletics, in 1910, 1911, 1913, 1929 and 1930. (They left for Kansas City after the 1954 season, and ultimately wound up in Oakland.)
And let us not forget that after Obama's beloved White Sox were eliminated from the postseason, he adopted the Phillies as his team. As he no doubt will remind people if he makes a campaign appearance in eastern Pennsylvania over the next few days.)
What I've always noticed is that the Dodgers tend to defeat the Yankees one year into visual art revolutions. The television era in 55, the pop art era in 63, and the VCR era in 81.
I'm calling this the year of the Hawaiians- Shane Victorino and Barack Obama.
Really interesting-Philadelphia Phillies-Philadelphia means "City of Brotherly Love" or a commoness of purpose, a uniting if you will in a common cause-Obama wants to reunite a very divided Country and a very divided World-His message has been one of hope for the future and that message is sadly needed!
Vincent: Obama also sad he supported the Rays. Jon Stewart caught him in the dreaded home team pander paradox.
Not to be outdone, although she criticized Obama for flip-flopping at the time, Palin was caught in a home team pander a trois when there were still four teams in it.
Also, reminding people he supported the Phillies won't play well here in Florida and we are a swing state.
The last time Penn State went undefeated in football? 1994.
Spooky, huh?
I forgot to mention.
2008 was the first year my alma mater UMBC went to the NCAA basketball tournament.
And Obama would be our first African-American president.
And there were African-Americans on the UMBC team.
Aason is right. This is spooky.
msmackle: now to be fair we should really only count instances where baseball was played (what with the arrow of time and all that). So based on that analysis...yeah I think the bulk of the 20th century was pretty much a hellhole for conservatives - it was more or less a Democratic century until 1980!.....
And now you're making me nervous about the Rollins gang being so young.
thou shalt not do statistics based on one data point.
angry young man: I agree, thou shalt not do statistics based on one data point... but as of next week, we'll have two data points! TWO! If that's not a clear confirmation of an all-explaining trend, I don't know what you need.
Clearly, the Philadelphia Phillies have some mystical control over all things political. Next year, rather than donating money to our favorite political candidates, we should all buy season's tickets and franchise merchandise for every NL team other than the Phillies, to increase their revenues in order to lure away the Phillies' young guns. Wait, no, that would just create an inflationary competition between teams for the same players. Okay, so let's all pick an NL team, and everyone buy franchise merchandise for that team.
Let's see, which team says "Hope and Change" the most. Other than the Phillies. Who clearly, in their efforts to repeat next season have in their hearts a desire to reject Obamaism and return the Reagan-era status quo. (Heartless bastards, I was always skeptical about that whole "City of Brotherly Love" thing.) I'm tempted by the Padres, but I fear losing Evangelicals with that move.
Ideas?
